What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

IMG_6681.JPG I've had this Queen (D2 steel) for a while but don't think I posted a picture of it. I really like this knife. Blade came razor sharp. The only thing I'd change would be the brass pins and liners to steel. Apart from that, I reckon it's a pretty nice Barlow.

MJ, that is a nice Queen, personally I like brass liners and pins.

Added a Clauss Barlow, made by Case, this one is probably from the Tested era, they seem to be a little hard to find and usually suffer from old worn Barlow syndrome, this one is not too bad. Barlows were meant to be used and most of them were. I really like the sorta root beer bone they were using at the time. Pic shows next to Case Tested Barlow.

Its sure makes a fine four pin soup bone float, Augie ! :D

Thanks Charlie. That will be a great button and knife Charlie, love a sheepsfoot blade, I have to be satisfied collecting the vintage Barlows, never seem to have much luck in the mad rush for the TC's although I did manage a reservation for the Forum knife.

Awesome CLAUSS John, I eye balled that one as well and missed it. When I see great old knives go on that site I always hope someone here becomes the new owner:thumbsup:

Thanks Paul, i also enjoy seeing that someone here picked up a knife I was interested in.

Nice Clauss, Augie.

I picked up this Clauss at a show earlier this year. It has the same tang stamp as yours.

I have not seen 'Clauss' Case knives before. Would someone care to explain who or what (I'm guessing the former) Clauss was?
Thanks!

Clauss was an Ohio cutlery firm. I've not read about the Case connection.

Do you have more info, John?

Thanks for the kind comments guys.

Dean, let me see if I have this right. Clauss was a cutlery manufacturer dating back to the late 1800's, mainly scissors and shears, they also distributed pocket knives under their name made by several different manufacturers, Case being one of them, others may have been Challenge, Utica, Robeson. You can usually attribute who made the knife by how close they come to original manufacturers patterns, construction and type of bone.

Search Clauss Cutlery history and you will find some other discussions on other forums that may explain it better than I did.

Hearsay, rumor or what not but I've heard that on the back side of CLAUSS shields it will say CASE? I have a CLAUSS Jack that is spot on for a CASE of the same era:thumbsup: not about to pop out the shield though:p

I just picked this barlow up. Is this the Bog Oak or the Grenadill? I picked up both and am very impressed with the fit and finish and what a value! Very slim design. Nice Photo.

Thanks! Mine is the Bog Oak. If I'm not mistaken, the ones in Grenadill aren't numbered on the blade tang and the Bog Oak are. And man do I agree. Great value and very well made! I need to get it in Grenadill too. Which do you prefer since you have both?

Augie, those Barlows have all the right stuff!!
Such a fine collection!!
Two knives alike does make a collection you know!!

About time I started the requisite tease!!

They are starting to "Button things up" at GEC!!

Charlie can I convince you to return to the black sheep barlow idea that came up recently...

I am thinking something like this

Would be great. A sheepfoot main, a black or brown wane bone sawcut handle. Just perfection.

Wonderful pair, Tiger! Nice to see a bone handled Imperial!!
