What makes a good truck knife?

a longer handled version
"Trench shovel " IIRC .

This is as new , before I did minor mods and put in the SUV .

It's more a big spade than a real shovel for moving /carrying dirt . With an edge sharpened up , it will kinda work as heavy machete .

Not a great shovel or machete , but well worth having in an emergency , IMO .

Same for SD . Might work OK , but far from my first choice .

:oops:Just now occurred to me , I somehow forgot to try throwing it ! 😏 Maybe when it warms up outside .

How about a glock knife?

I got one of those maybe 20 years ago. Our duty weapons were Glocks, and the toy store where we bought our stuff had them on sale, or something. I wasn't real impressed with it, and don't remember ever using it for anything. But after you brought it up, I did a search, and it'll be going in the truck.:)

ESEE 6
Bahco 24' bow saw
Fiskars X25 axe

Good quality but also easy to replace and not so expensive that I'm going to care if they get stolen. Honestly, the saw and the axe have come in handy a lot more often than the ESEE.

As with so many of these types of questions, where one lives will likely be a factor in what one feels they need in their truck.

I have Bahco folding saw and a couple of Gransfor Bruk axes in addition to the knives I listed earlier, but I didn't think they were part of the inventory requested.

That said, we definitely think along similar lines.

Like so many of us here, I have extra knives and tools that I never use. They can reside in a vehicle or emergency kit just as easily as in my knife bin and garage. So a sharpened hand shovel, a SAK, a Fiskars hand axe, and a Carbon V SRK all make a good kit not because they are "the best" gear, but because they all do good work, fit requirements for a road trip in Colorado, and they are otherwise doing nothing in my collection right now.

I really do love the Skrama, though, as I said above, and it can replace the hand axe and SRK. The shovel and SAK would stay. Maybe a proper folding saw should appear.

Right now I have a cheap Mora in the center console. It always lives there.

COld steel roach belly is a solid choice as well. Love this thing. It's been floating around the vehicle and is a salt bag knife this year. Has some rust flecks that I cleaned off already lol

I added the heat shrink grip

So in my opinion, whT makes a good truck knife is that it is typically larger than something you would have on you and cheap enough to not care about it so much.

Buck 110 slim select
Mora
ANY number of cold steel knives
Condor
Bps

Something that likes to be beat on.

I have a different take on it, instead of what makes a good truck knife, I say it all depends on the truck. Fancy knife for a fancy truck ( like a gentleman’s knife, but a gentleman’s truck ), a beater knife for a beat up told truck, and a basic knife for a basic no frills truck…like an F150 but with roll up windows and only an AM/FM radio and an ash tray. So let’s see the pics of the trucks, then we will see what knives we can put in them. Yes, there is one of us in every crowd. 😆

To answer the question, I did find a round key ring type knife while filling up my Tundra, so I kept that in the middle consul under the radio for awhile, just to have a quick cutter, or an old Swiss army knife. My truck is 19 years old going in 20. I also did find a razor blade utility knife while camping, badly rusted so that ended up in the tool box for clean up on another day. I have found 3 or 4 knives overall, so I guess it does happen, maybe fallen off the bumper or something like that, found one while walking the dog.

As I was first reading your post, I was wondering what kind of knife fits in a 20 year old Japanese truck....?
Mine is a Nissan?

I don't think I really make Japanese truck knives, Idk What those would look like?
I think Mine are more for dump trucks, garbage trucks, bulldozers, a logging truck....something Rough and Crude, and a little Ugly......haha. :D IMG_20250727_135532292_HDR.jpg

Obviously, a Junglee Hattori knife, would go in a Japanese truck. 😉

Yes, it's a little much but it's a badass knife!

Funny, I never thought of a Japanese knife for the Japanese truck, but an older kn9fe for an older truck. I do have a Gerber Silver Knight that was made in Seki Japan, or I really could use my George Sakai (?) Bowie for it!!! I like yours!!!

Edit: it would not be George Takei as that would be Sulu from Star Trek. 😜

Yeah. Whoever mentioned you have to theme the knife to the vehicle. Sent me down a rabbit whole.

But for a Japanese truck.

Probably a tanto.

Mabye a Nata.
