What makes a knife cool?

Cool knife aspects

  • Total voters
    150
  • Poll closed .
It's unanimous: Knives are cool! Not having a knife is uncool. We have all understood this since we were like age 8, pity the poor souls who never knew it!

But "who cares what people vote . " ? ;) Nah , I just would think performance more important .

I thought design would include ergonomics, hotspots, etc., since cutting performance doesn’t necessarily include other aspects of performance—or maybe I just misinterpreted the categories. I included expensive materials because I prefer cpm 20cv over s30v because it’s a little more expensive and rarer among knives sold.

Sure . Why not ? I just didn't think of it that way .

This is all getting too complicated. We need to appoint a knife coolness czar and let them reign with an iron fist. Who is the coolest knife nut on the forums? Who is going to be the final arbiter to whom the final say in these matters shall be deferred?

The CS Ti-lite with blued titanium handle is cool!

I have to admit, the Ti-Lite is a purpose driven knife and used in the capacity it was designed it excels. I have the smaller one and it gets carried as a backup to my pistol. As a stiletto it's far superior than 99% of similar blade. it does seem very light duty as a utility knife but nothing more extreme than thread cutting and opening mail.

Is this a cool knife?

If I had a vintage 68 Chevy/GMC pickup, Id have the key cut and carry it to use as a back up key. Till then, I'll just keep it in the box of vintage knives I carry pccasionally while waiting for a vintage GM to use it on or to sell it. I've been thinkin' about giftin' it to a friend who has a '68 Z28 Chevy Camaro, now that's cool.:)

That...is extremely cool.

How about this? Is this cool? An electrician's knife with a built in level for setting power distribution boxes. I used the knife for years in place of a traditional TL-29. I do wish more companies did this, a bubble level should be standard on all TL-29 style knives. Plus look at that locking screwdriver/wire stripper blade, certainly a useful configuration for a utility knife. Does it make it cool though?

Long pull and grooved bolsters! Definitely cool!

I never saw another one. Got it from an old Gutmann’s catalog back in the late 70s, early 80s. Those catalogs used to be 2”-3” thick with more knives pictured than a years worth of SMKW catalogs. I used to save my money just to buy the catalog.

Honestly, all points in the survey are important, and work synergistically to take a knife to top level. When I studied furniture design we were taught a great lesson I'll never forget: Great design can be ruined by bad craftsmanship and poor function, and the inverse is equally true - no amount of exotic material ornament and stellar craftsmanship / detail can make up for hideous design.

Allen Elishewitz always hits it out of the park.

Every knife T. Erdelyi T. Erdelyi shows off is mega cool. It's almost as if he is a top contender to be the official Czar of Knife Coolness, with his decrees on the matter infallible and indubitable.

Perhaps we need a poll.
