What makes a knife "Tactical"???

How well the knife performs in Mall combat? :)

I'll go along with most of the above answers. Black, bead blast finish, one hand opening, micarta, G10 or Carbon Fiber, etc...

What makes a knife "Tactical"? c

The number of Malls that have the knife in question adopted as official gear to their small army of Tactical (what else?) Mall NInjas. :D
One or two malls and you can't really tell, now a couple of dozens and you got yourself a true tactical fighter there!

NsB

PS: and by "small army" I'm referring to the unnamed mall operators, of course.

edited: I should have read all the answers before posting, Danbo got me there  :p :)

That's it. I'm sick of all this conjecture and supposition. I officially decree at a tactical knife is one that is held together by torx screws. Hunting knives are pinned. Utility knives have Phillips screws.

Now, if your knife has a variety of screws, such as my Spyderco Military, you have to find the percentage of torx screws. I count 4 torx and 3 phillips. As there is more than a 50% ratio between torx screws and all other screws, I declare the Military to be tactical.

Now go through your collections and see what is actually tactical and what is not.

Hold the knife in your hand...

...if you can imagine yourself using the knife to smite your enemies...

...its a tactical knife.

To some knife purveyors, it is just a matter of packaging and marketing.

IMO "tactical" is not a term which can be rationally defined - everyone has his own definition of this word. Therefore it's more or less pointless to discuss this topic. Just my 2 Cents.

Tactical means you dont have to use exotic woods, or polish anything...LOL... Least thats what I thought it means...

If there is such a thing as a Tactical Knife, then there must be a Strategic Knife. I would think that a Strategic Knife is one that is deployed with a certain methodology in mind; kind of a special purpose battle knife. A Tactical Knife is one that is ready for varity of challenges; kind of a general purpose battle knife. Now what happens when a Tactical Knife meets a Strategic Knife.

@AlienMind there should also be such a thing as an "operative-knife" (infact there are knives calles " operator" on the market).
I guess a Tactical-knife last's (or reaches) longer...whatever.

@ Larry: The problem can't be solved if you deny it. ;)
I think you make preety good "tacticals".
As Trace said tactical means no extra embellisement or fancy materials (exotic woods, gold inlays....)pure business (whatever kind of).

no offence here.
I love this place.

red mag

PS: I carry a Spyderco Starmate as an EDC and consider it "tactical" cause it's there when I need it.

Use “Search” function (the button directly under Remember 9-11-2001 band) on the word tactical and you will see how frequently it is abused in knife subject. Please look here, here and here as starting point.

UltraSteele,
Tactics are used on the battlefeild
Not only, IMO tactics mean knowing what you are going to do in the nearest hour. Knowing what you are going to do in the nearest day is already strategy :D

Hey Larry, I saw you on TV the other day. I had the local news on getting ready for work and I look up and see this old pigsticker on the tube. I'm just starting to think this guy looks familiar and the reporter started talking about Lonesome Pine art tacticals!

Pretty cool, but a little hard to look at first thing in the morning!

Larry, before you go off and start making more "Tacticals", please get around to making my mokume and jigbone special! ;) :)

Something that is deployed through tatics. Or in the knife world, its got a black blade and costs atleast $20.00 more because it looks "tatical".
