What makes you a Spyderco fan?

The Spyderhole opener - it's simple and 100% reliable even for someone with limited manual dexterity. The ergonomics - none of my favorites require textured handles, handle jimping, or a "death grip" to feel totally secure in my hand. The Spydercrew, especially Sal Glesser and other crew members who moderate and participate in their forums - you'd have to look long and hard to find their equal when it comes to honesty, candor, politeness, and the willingness to listen to, and occasionally act upon, even the most far out ideas we forumites come up with.

What he said!! YEP!!! John

I admit when I first noticed Spyderco's in the late 1980's, I was not a fan and they didn't catch on to me until the mid 1990's. Now they just make sense. F&F, blade materials, ergos, and the fact that they are from my home town of Golden, CO.

First time I saw a co-worker with an Endura in the 80's, I was hooked. It seemed like the logical next step to my Buck 110.

The spyder hole was deceptively simple and allowed one hand opening I loved it. The knife was very light and I really was taken by the pocket clip. One just pulls the knife from the pocket and just like that it was ready to cut.

The Endura, to this day, is my favorite Spyderco.

Design with performance and ergonomics in mind, many (high performance) blade steels available in "standard"/non-fancy-pants models (at a reasonable price) and many pocket friendly designs.

Ergonomics.
The fact that the company listens to its customer bases, and often works with the Afi's too. I consider myself a bit of an Afi, and really appreciate the company attitude.
The fact that they did NOT fall victim to the industry trend toward Tacti-cool.
The realization that my hand knows the right knife when it holds it.
PM2, Caly 3, Street Beat!

Does this count? Keep in mind, there are no fixed blades in there at all and it's missing about 20-30 other knives. :)

I'd have to say that the knives brought me in, but the company (and the people who make up the company) keeps me as a customer by being honest and fair. I'm also amazed that they take customer designs seriously, and have wonderful people to help make realistic dreams come true.

Their commitment to innovation and never settling with "good enough" They have a multitude of designs that are proven. Yet they continue to tweak and improve. That is excellence.

Spyderco is the Apple in knife industry, and Sal is Jobs without the temper and with lots of humility!

The product, the company, the founder and the value they bring. What else?;)

Rev, that's simply  !

... the first time I ever saw a Spyderco I thought "I will never own a knife like that, seems ugly, ...vary odd shapes" that's till i got one in my hands

Exactly, I completely agree with the parts I quoted above. But once I had one in my hands (felt the ergos!) AND experienced the slicing power. Nothing slices better than my Delica 4 FFG! Oh wait, the Stretch II... or the Dragonfly...

Oh heck, whatever, the point is they PERFORM. (And I've come around on the looks for most of 'em, too.)

Have always been a knife guy. Learned of spyderco through a fellow employee at a former job. I started looking into these knives about two years ago but prices and financial situation kept me from buying one. Finally broke down and bought a Tenacious last Christmas. This was the best knife I had ever owned. It wasn't the one I wanted but it served its purpose. The blade was insanely sharp and I cut myself the first time I tried to close it. A couple of months later I was strolling through the local flea market and looked down into a dealers glass case and saw the spyderhole and the distinctive hump of a spydie hawkbill. Asked to see it and found it was a clipit Merlin in AUS 8 with a $25 price tag. I didn't even barter just pulled out the cash and pocketed the knife. It was well used and the point was broken. Someone had rounded the spine off down to the point. It was well done and looked like it was manufactured that way. This was my new favorite knife and I had caught the bug. Since then I have acquired another Merlin in G2 that was pristine and never carried. A used Harpy in ATS 55. This is my new edc. A new Endura 4 saber grind in VG 10. A byrd hawkbill. A byrd meadowlark. And just got a Matriarch 2 for Christmas. To say I'm obsessed with them is an understatement. My user name comes from when I bought the Endura on eBay. Got a text from the better half the next day "another knife?" was all it said. These knives feel like they were molded to fit my hand. They cut anything I put in front of them: tape, zip ties, clamshell packs, even 8 awg wire like it was butter. No other brand has caught my eye or drained my wallet like spyderco. Although I did purchase a Kabar dozier that I carry daily as a beater when I need a knife I don't care about. It functions well and sharpens easily although the ergos aren't as good. Thanks Sal for creating the best knives on the planet IMHO. My next acquisition will either be a Tasman Salt or a Lil Matriarch. I just love the hawkbills as you can tell. Also looking forward to the Roc. Keep up the good work. And know you have a customer for life.

Second this. Sal just replied to one of my posts. Didnt need to take the time to respond to me. How clear is it this is a customer satisfaction driven company?

Also, check out what Gayle Bradley has to say about working with Spyderco in the YouTube clip where he discusses the design of the Air. Sal just wants to make great knives that people will want.

Finally, mid-level value. Who else can produce such quality in the $50-80 price range?

Hi Anotherknife,

Welcome to our forum. Thanx much for the kind words, interest and support.

Besides the fact that Spyderco makes top quality knives, what made me a fan was dealing with the outstanding people at the SFO. I always look forward to my monthly pilgrimage there (used to be weekly).

Great "entry-level" steels on productions runs, access to high-performance steels on sprint runs, great ergonomics, super-fast deployment hole, good value for the money, FFG slicing blades, and (most importantly) a management team that cares about and LISTENS to their customers!

Thanks Sal. I've been on a one man mission to educate my friends and associates of your products. I gifted a byrd hawkbill to my boss for Christmas. Told him to use and abuse it and if he liked it to check out a higher end product. Knowing his personality he will have to buy them all. I sing the praises of your knives to all who will listen. Even have gotten my daughter wanting one. We're going to go look for her something this weekend. Am loving the new Matriarch I received and the looks on people's faces when they see it.

What makes you a Spyderco fan?

one word: Sal

As a former small business owner, and current business major, I really appreciate the time Sal devotes to listening to his costumers praises and critiques.

And the fact that you take the time to read these posts and respond to them shows the type of person you are. This level of interest in what we are saying and thinking means a lot. I have not had to call customer service other than to buy a new pocket clip for a used Rescue I found to give to the friend who introduced me to your company. But it was a pleasant experience and found the lady very helpful and informative. Received the new clip in 2-3 days, can't really remember. Thanks again Sal.
