What might this be?

i don't know, i am actually a bit dubious about the validity of the straightening method applied. Those marks looks like annealed, i just imagine the carbide segregation in those areas.

I have done a few with Peter's that came out dead straight. The ones that weren't straight....I think my grinding was slightly off. Stezann.....call Brad if your dubious as to the method. Carbide segregation at the spine really wouldn't be any concern to me at all. The edge .... a different story!
 
I don't mean to say it is a lousy method and the knives are defective, it is probably a quick method in front of many batches to be tuned, whereas i prefer more eveness within the structure and more gentle, distributed heating in case straightening is still required after the quench...but i do just one knife every now and then, so i have plenty of time to dedicate :)
If i'll get a bent thick blade i'll probably try it as well
