It is a side lock. I have a couple older Hunters with the side lock. They’ve held up well so far. Come to think of it I also have a Cowboy in a side lock too. My daughter instantly snagged the Alox.....

I actually bought this black Leatherman Wave a few weeks ago, but I just got it back from warranty repair today.
I bought it very reasonably on that big online auction site but found that the scissor spring wasn't functioning properly. When I called LM, they told me to send it in for warranty repair. It seems the little protrusion that is visible in the center of the hole in the frame of the scissors had sheared off.
My guess is that my tool was not the first encounter they had had with this problem. It cost me first class shipping one way, and about a two-week wait. Now it's good to go, and, even though I sent it in without any of the removable bits, it came back to me with both bits included. It's nice to see a company stand by their products and bend over backwards to keep their customers happy. Go Leatherman! T-A

My original Wave was my favorite, unfortunately I'm 99% sure I know where and when I lost it (after the fact of course) We were unloading several pallets of light fixtures at the job site. I cut pallet banding, set it down on the semi's trailer because I had to pivot to prevent some other fixtures from falling, then proceeded to unload the remaining pallets. In the hustle and bustle my wave never made it back into my sheath.
Pretty sure it made it to the interstate before bouncing off the trailer or HOPEFULLY the driver found it and gave it a new home (never saw him again) Anyway it pained me because it was perfectly broken in
