My go-to EDC is a Small 21 with ambi silver thumb lugs and custom text engraving. Depending on my clothing and my environment, I might also carry:
- Emerson Mini Commander, black, plain
- Emerson Mini CQC-7B, black, semi-serrated
- Al Mar Auto SERE, black, plain
- Microtech Assailant II card knife (17-4 PH version), black
The Seb is my true everyday knife. It has never met a task it could not handle with ease. It's simple and plain enough that it goes with everything- from jeans and a t-shirt to a custom-made suit. Whether I choose to thumb-flick or slide the blade open, every time I use my Seb I get a kick out of the absolutely perfect action.
The Mini Com is for casual days and weekends, or any time I think I might have to do more serious work with a knife I won't be afraid to beat up. The recurved blade makes it an amazing slicer, and the handle ergos are the best I've yet encountered in a production folder. If I had to, I could fight with this knife and fight well. The Mini 7B is generally chosen for the same reasons, although the tanto profile makes it far more suited for stabbing than slicing- something I've not yet had to do. Though it's a perfectly capable knife on its own merits, I also like it for its history.
The Auto SERE is such a fantastic folder that I can't think of anything I
wouldn't use it for. The only drawback is its size, which is definitely "full". It's fairly slim and light for an auto, but it is certainly not a piece that will disappear in your jeans pocket. I've met other side-opening autos that fire faster, but none that fire harder- this thing will jump out of your hand if you're not holding on. The blade is perfect for almost every task: pointy, with a nice swedge for stabbing; just enough belly for slicing; thick enough to handle rough use. Lockup is perfect- zero play in any direction, almost as nice as my Seb. That's a tough feat for any knife, but especially for an auto. Ergos are good and the aluminum handle has a "dry" finish, providing plenty of grip without resorting to pocket-destroying checkering. With no reservations, I have to say that the Auto SERE is the finest side-opening automatic knife on the market today. Forget the MODs and the Microtechs and even the world-class Benchmade Auto Stryker: this is the last word in automatics.
The Assailant is a fun little piece that slips right into a suit jacket pocket and disappears completely. Mine, which is 17-4 PH steel, is heavier than the titanium version but takes a better edge. The small, 90-degree chisel-ground edges aren't the best for general-purpose tasks, but they make short work of cardboard boxes. The Assailant is the knife you use when anything is better than nothing- but in this case "anything" is dead reliable, since it's just a solid little slab of steel. It's also a nice conversation piece, because the last thing people expect from you to pull from your card wallet is a razor-sharp knife from Microtech.
