This will end up in Maintenance, but for now, no, don't use vegetable oil. All vegetable oils, including olive oil can go rancid.
Mineral oil is popular and cheap. I use Ballistol.

I like Marine TUF CLOTH.

Tried most of 'em, and this gives me the best results.

If you can't get that, mineral oil is indeed excellent.

Ballistol doesnt harden or turn w/ age as far as I know and protects even bare satin finished high carbon steels really well (like CS carbon 5) apart from that break free clp or eezox are a second choice

I use Breakfree CLP. IMO, there is nothing better for rust protection for Damascus knives or firearms.

I use a product called "Rust Free" from A.G. Russell.

A little goes a long way , its not messy. and its transparent when applied.

I have been using Camellia oil for quite a while now and have never had a problem.
It's not gummy and does not attract dust like some protectants (Ballistol) and does not evaporate as fast as mineral oils I have used. A little goes a LONG way and leaves a nice satin sheen.

Swordsmen from the Orient have been using it for hundreds of years.

I also use it on my ivory and stag handles with similar success.

+1 with Kevin Jones.
Camellia oil - for kitchen, shelf queen, and EDC use. Food safe, great rust protection, the whole nine.

Well then, how about mineral oil on guns.
Blued steel?

I know there are better options but in a pinch...

Would anyone think it is bad to put Rem Oil (spray oil) on stainless or damascus folder knives (such as Sawbys)

Just worried there could be problem caused by the propellants in the can. More so worried if this is a good way to keep the folding mechanism oiled.

My input/suggestion is rather than using oil, use wax. Its longer lasting, better protection, and does not draw dirt or grit like oils can/will.

Although I've tried many different types of wax, I keep coming back to Mother's brand caranuba cleaner/wax. Its available at Wal-mart, Checker, and many other auto/dept. stores. I personally think its much better than even Renaissance.
