Very interesting thread.

I'm intrigued my the use of Mothers wax on carbon steel or damascus knives.

If one has been oiling the steel and natural handles (mostly wood in my case), how would one prep or clean before applying the wax? Is the waxing procedure like waxing a car? Smear on, let develop a haze, then buff off? Do you wax the handles?

I appreciate any further info.

I would think you could just use the wax over whatever you have been using before. I use wd-40 on my damascus blades while finishing them out, then I wipe them down real good before I wax them. I just rub on a light thin layer of wax and kinda rub it pretty good. That seems to remove most of the left over crud. I then add another thin layer and let it sit for a couple minutes under a light, then rub it off with the blue paper towels I get at costco. I don't use it on the handles. Not because of any other reason than I just don't. I do use it on the guard though.
