What on your belt?

Recently it was a Leatherman Charge, BRKT Canadian Camp, and a pair of Outdoor Research Nalgene carriers. One had a Nalgene with Water. The other carried...A compass, Bic Lighter, Vaseline soaked Cottonballs in a film Canister. First Aid Kit. Hooks, spiderline and split shot in a film canister. A Carrot Cake Clif Bar and a hunk of paracord.

it varies from time to time but 3 things ill never go into the woods without are one of my fixed blades, a firesteel and canteen with cup

Nice looking kit, Rick - and Dannyboy Leather, too.

Here's mine:

When I'm in the woods, I always have my fixed blade and multitool on my belt. My EDC knife rides on my belt at all times, unless it's stuffed in my front pocket. My PSK / fire kit is sometimes carried on my belt, but I prefer to attach it to my pack when I'm hiking. It contains all the usual PSK stuff.

All the best,

- Mike

On the top part, to many cheese burgers, on the botttom part, don't remember.

That makes two of us.
That said, I always have my JK EWOK on my belt and I will soon be able to give a review on a fire pouch that will reside there as well.

A small, flat survival kit, and a flatish folder, either the Swamp Rat Knife Works Rat Trap, or a Meyerchin rigging knife.

Clip with keyring holding keys, yellow tritium Nite Glowring, EDC Deport small spy capsule with 4 Advils. On 2nd ring I have my Photon and Vic Midnite MiniChamp.
These all fit in my right side rear pocket and between the point on my belt where I attach it, and the closest belt loop on my pants, I place my holster holding my Fenix PD20 to prevent the PD20 from sliding around on my belt.
For work on the days I'm in the office I attach my door access card and on right hip my BlackBerry.
On left hip but usually in left front pocket is my iPhone. Right front pocket is my Spydie Ladybug Salt PE in small fob, Delica 4 or BM Mini Grip 551 or Mini Ritter Grip clipped in front right pocket.
I haven't updated my EDC pics in a while so this is the most recent I have. I keep my Vic Huntman(s) in my EDC bag and the SE phone was lost last Oct on a drunken night in Montreal!

I've always carried a knife and fire kit on my belt when in the woods. Refining gear is a constantly evolving endevour for me. Here is the latest set up. Remember these are not the only items I have on me... this is just what I sport on my belt.

How bout' you?

Rick

Clockwise from top left: My "Dweller" knife and sheath, Fire kit (Hudson Bay tobacco box, char, jute, waxed jute, true tinder fungus, flint, "Strife" knife, char cooker, leather pad.) Leather bag (with prepared jute, cedar bark, steel wool and a couple chunks of true tinder fungus.) Fishing kit (spiderwire, wet/dry flies, hooks and splitshot) Sewing kit (waxed nylon thread, 2 needles and an awl) 8hr tea candle, Length of jute and paracord, Firesteel, scraper and photon light and my "Ugly Pouch".

Looks great, well thought out, nice work. Would work well in mountain man circles. Nice display picture. Good job on the knife and sheath you made.

A real good looking kit, Rick! I carry most of the same items...keeping it simple and light. In the winter, here in the mountains, my kit changes slightly but the basics remain the same.

I carry a host of more modern equipment, too...especially when backpacking. However, my older, proven equipment is my favorite (not much of a choice at the rendezvous ;)). I carry my fire kit and some other small items in the moosehide belt pouch that I made in the photo. *The English powder flask in the photo (a gift) came out on the Oregon Trail and was involved in at least one Indian skirmish (documented).

More primitive gear, great. Like your set up. Axe and sheath are very nice. I really like the possibles bag.

So, do you wear all those watches on one arm, or do you spread them out between your two wrists and one ankle?

Two wrists and my "middle leg" so I can check the time at the urinal.;)

Seriously, it's the most recent pic I could find that had my EDC stuff. I definitely need to take some updated pics.

Yep, it's my new Anniversary knife, no. 11. Just got it on Monday, so it hasn't seen much wilderness use (but it's the scourge of garlic and onions!). It will be replacing my Delta 5, which I used almost exclusively for about 8 months.

All the best,

On my belt I usually have a fixed blade (Bravo-1 usually, will be rotating with NWA Sierra Scout or BRKT Gunny depending on hike), Vic OHT, and my PSK housed in a guyot.

And yes, I do carry water, but it's in a bladder in my pack. If I'm on a short walk, I have water in another guyot in my 10x4 bottle holder.

Since I got an Osprey with a proper waist-belt, I'm thinking I might move the canteen to my pack and put a few bare bones essentials in my pockets. The canteen doesn't fit quite right if wearing a waistbelt...unless I can find a way to dangle it a little like my sheaths.... :) I like this set-up because even if I carry the guyot in my pack, if I want to drop my pack and explore, I can just put the PSK guyot in one of my mini-rollypollys and be off.

The only thing that bugs me sometimes is the bulk of the guyot; it rubs and brushes against stuff more than the hip formed GI canteens (though I've never had a problem with it getting snagged).

BTW Rick, your kit is mad slick :thumbup:

I like the kit, it's simple and light. I'm changing stuff a lot right now, since I have kids I'm out with and since I have lots of time to experiment with carry modes at home while I'm UNABLE TO EVER GET OUT due to Ms. Koyote and nursing school.........

There's a lot of urban/suburban direct to wilderness options out here and I've been working on belt rigs that I can toss into a string pack when I'm around the 'danes.

Rick, your packs look really good for that and I may try one out, I've been using one of the fabric 'shopping bag' type ones with the paracord string thing they do to cinch the bag up and wear it like a pack.

Right now I'm mostly using that cool pouch KG made me, wiith a pair of SAKs, mylar blankie, and an altoids tin minikit (iodine, needle/thread, small gauze pad and tape, lighter, flint and a couple tinderballs. Along with that there's a selection of sheaths knives, though I'm mostly carrying one of my EDC models right now. I also have a kleen kanteen holster and vary hatchets and hawks.

I must say that this is all on a second belt. my pants belt gets nothing on it when I'm out hiking. I find it more versatile and comfortable that way.

Wearing a second belt for gear is the way to go, especially if part of your gear includes a big chopper/hatchet. I use the wide leather belt from one of my old tool rigs for my stuff. Works great.

I generally hate having stuff on my waste. I'm even leaning towards neck carry to get the knife off my belt. I generally EDC a bare bones fire and signal kit in my wallet and on my keys and then throw on my Maxpedition bottle holder or day pack when I go hiking.

Wearing a second belt is a great idea..... so is attaching items to a small pack or shoulder bag. Just be sure that you have the bare essentials on your person at all times.

That belt rig is on me ALL the time when in the woods. I wear a canteen with a shoulder strap and a possibles bag or small pack depending on the season.

I tried the canteen on my belt... but it is too cumbersome... the shoulder strap does the trick.
