Hi there,

I'm new to this forum. Maybe your knowlegde can help me decide in purchasing a new slip joint knive.

I'm interested in the Otter knives. Now I'm weighing pros and cons. I like a carbon blade, as it is easy to sharpen. Also like the idea of a half stop, although I have no experience with this feature. So, what knive to buy?

KniveProCon
262 beemasterbrass fittings, niceStainless blade
No half stop
No lanyard hole
Not sure about the bee inlay
161 klassikAlso available in carbonstainless fittings (not a deal breaker, but like the brass)
No half stop
No lanyard hole
180 Weavers kniveCarbon blade
Half stop
A lot cheaper
stainless fittings (not a deal breaker, but like the brass)
Wharncliff blade. Not sure I like the profile
No layard hole
161 R_MSBrass fittings, nice
Lanyard hole
Stainless blade
No half stop

So ideally I'd like a 161 R_MS with a half stop and a carbon blade. But that's not in their line up.
With your experience in knives: what compromise should I make...?

Thank you from The Netherlands

Any pics?
I don’t think there is any harm in posting a link to the manufacturer’s website:

The only Otter knife I have is the K55K in carbon steel. It seems well constructed.

I have heard great things about their other knives and may make a purchase myself at some point. Maybe somebody with more experience with the brand can chime in with more guidance.
Am I giving to much importance to a half stop? I have no experience with this. Is it really that much saver?
A half stop is not a safety feature, I don’t think, despite what you see on Youtube. I don’t care if a knife has one or not, although some people do have strong opinions about it.

Oh, and welcome!

I have the three rivet in carbon steel and the anchor messer in stainless. I prefer the anchor. It is a really nice knife. The three rivet wasn't built quite as well.

I have two different sizes of the anchor sheepfoot blade knives, carbon steel. They have the distinction of being the sharpest factory knives I have ever purchased. They are both very nicely made, especially for the price...

Or maybe their Hippekniep. The origins of a sodbuster. Checks some boxes as well: carbon blade, half stop, lanyard hole

Their hippeknieps do not have half-stop.
I have a few Otter knives and all are quite well made simple knives. I like them all but my favorites are the large grenadil hippekniep and the small ankermesser in sapeli.
Among the choices you've listed, I'd vote for the webermesser.

I'd say you might be putting too much weight on the half stop. I used to be the same way until I got a GEC 35 which is now one of my favorite knives, so now i dont put too much thought into if a knife has a half stop. Best case would be to buy one of the models you like with a half stop and one without and learn your preferences from experience.

Just ordered the Classic in stainless. Because it's coming from a dealer here, Finland, it shouldn't take months to get here like stuff from the US these days, but you never know....now I'm waiting for text alerts to go and open the designated mail-box :)

I love each model they make. Great quality. You will probably buy one and then the next one untill you have every model
