What popular knives that you don't understand why

The entire Tenacious series... I don't understand why anyone would opt for those when for $15-20 more, you can get one of their excellent FRN lockbacks (Dragonfly, Delica, Endura) with better steel, ergos, F&F...

Because they weren't always $50.

The popular knives from The hard use genre. You know, knives that cant cut worth a crap but excites the extreme crowd because it looks strong. A folder can be the size of a house and still have that paper thin lock relief cutout. Normal framelocks are great though, just funny to me how some things work for others.

The popular knives with UNpointy tips. Sharp tips are very useful in a pocket knife.

Sometimes I feel they work for the company .

Not really. Its that we all think the best knife in the world is "my knife" and the worst knife in the world is "your knife." :D

And so these threads always erupt. Invariably somebody gets bent outta shape.

Heck, I think we should go all "torches and pitchforks" on mjolnir74 for his blasphemous talk about Opinels! Of course, he's entitled to his opinion however ridiculous it is. :D

Interesting thread.

I wish I disliked as many knives as some folks in this thread. Unfortunately, with a very few individual exceptions, I happen to like knives of all ilk and that makes my bank account cry. If only I could develop a dislike for most knives then maybe I could afford a car - or food.....

:D

I don't get how a knife manufacturer can design a knife that consumers want to buy and then he actually has the audacity to sell it to them. I'm very perplexed by this "....Do you have what I want? You do? I'll take it!... syndrome. ..

Reading this has me confused! So, far I have this from it! :D

I don't like ZT thick as a brick knives, wiggle prone Spyderco's with holes, soft as rubber 154CM ATS34 jet bearing knife blades, knives with flippers like a seal, big dull tipped thick blades, knives with springs and things I don't understand, maybe even rubber bands? Small Kershaws & Gerber too, plastic handled anything, Boker really sucks, Cold Steel too, BK2 too, CRK & tool, you have to be a fool! Direwear of course, and tanto blades, Sebenza! Axis lock and Italian anything with D-2, .far too delicate for most tasks ugly as hell, thick useless for everything, that's just my Opinel and too bad if you don't like it. and of course anything by Emerson!

Lol, if it was just one person saying all that then I'd be confused.

DELICA 4.!

I thought Spydero knives were stupid. I don't throw stones at what i don't know,so i bought a used Delica 3. Perfection! It has been with me every day, for 5-6 yrs.

So! Heck! Bought a Delica 4 (improved?). It's heavier and thicker. They drilled 3 unsightly holes on both ends, both sides. They screwed it together (hope they got all the screws lock-tited). They rounded the blade point (good-bye sticker picker). Then! The they put a "buffalo hump" on the spine just behind the rounded off tip.

I guess i must be a neanderthal. Seems like all the other spydie lovers are clamoring for a Delica 5. If i decide to upgrade, i will skip the Delica 5 and try a Zero tolerance.

Excuse me now, i must put go put on my nomex suit.LOL. regards Henry

"If you don't have anything nice to say - then you'll be at home on the effing interwebs"

Seriously, I like reading the critiques from folks on this forum. It is worth 'pointing-out' (rim-shot) that many on this forum seem to critique the function of knives while spending hundreds/thousands on them. So clearly a lot has to do with form. The Chinese have the same CNC/grinders/forges that we have but many seem to think that anything made in the US is 'better'. Spyderco knives likely get a heck-of-a-lot more usage than anything made in the states and one could argue that if function alone dictated worth/value then spending over $200 on a knife is a waste. If form matters (it matters a lot to me) then it all becomes subjective. I can't carry a fixed-blade so folders are much more practical, having said that there's also no way that I can legally carry most of the 'overbuilt' folders - but I love the looks on some of them and would by more if I had the $$$.

My 0pinion is,Spyderco is like Glock, perfection (except some improved models). Just use them and never look at them. ( blast shield up, lol) regards Henry

Spyderco ... I just don't understand what people see in them at least regarding their looks.

Because the ficticious literary character Hanibal Lector uses one. Now before you go all 'that's nuts' on me, have you ever been to SpyderCo's Corporate Headquarters in Golden, Colorado? Go in the showroom and ask to see it. There's 2, a Harpy & a Civilian. SpyderCo is trademarked and they were paid for the use of that knife name brand. It's called Marketing and probably the biggest reason anybody 'gets' anything about odd shaped knives.

Hahaha. Maybe I just haven't tried the right one yet.

Or, because people like the ergonomics/steels/cutting geometry. Same as any other brand. Hardly anyone knows that it was a Harpy in Hannibal, and Spyderco was selling fine before that. Your logic doesn't pan out, but ok.

I'm not into the Contego(too weird a handle, not ergonomic at all), the Adamas(too wide a handle, better off with fixed), most of the larger ZT knives, and any other knives that can't cut worth a flip because they're too thick to part material easily. Sure, you can sharpen them to a crazy edge geometry, but you can't take away the width of the rest of the knife without extensive work.

Any knife that uses a typical, common lock, as in framelocks or lockbacks, and yet is ridiculously overpriced because of steel, maker, or fit&finish. That includes CRK, a lot of ZT, some Spyderco, Strider, Hinderer, Medford, Direware, Grayman, etc etc. I understand that it is easier for them to use a framelocks as it is both free to borrow, and fits simply into their designs. Still an outdated lock(and sooo many people gripe about framelock issues on this forum).

Also, any knife that goes beyond "built for use and also looks good" into the realm of "this is three times the price because we make it 3% better". I use my knives, I don't collect them, and I am not rich enough to throw away money. I can afford Sebenzas, Striders and such, but I always ask myself why I would need a cutting tool that costs as much as a car payment, cheap washer or dryer, some guns, a cell phone, a tv, a nice complete camping setup...I'm just randomly listing, but basically there is always something that is more deserving of that money. I think the only two I'd make a concession for would be Andrew Demko and William Henry.
