What Pre-2005 Spyderco Model For Sprint Run? Which Materials?

As many of you who have known me for a while do know that I'm kind of a fanatic about most of Spyderco's older models. Especially ones from what I refer to as the GOLDEN ERA 1998-2003. However here of late I've added the year 2004 to that list because there are 4 models I dearly love from that time period. I have recently chatted with a Brother here at BF about one older Spyderco model in particular and that being the RENEGADE model. I would very much love to see it return with either a Carbon Fiber handle ( or a really good grade of G-10) along with either an M390 or M-4 blade.

In the fixed blade category I would love to see a Sprint Run of the TEMPERANCE 1 model in either Superblue, VG-10 or HAP-40 along with either an FRN handle or a revamped G-10 handle. Also in the fixed blades I would love to see the original RONIN model with M-4 blade steel. Also I would like to see both of them in Spyderedge and plain edge.

One more folder I would love to see return of the RENEGADE model with either a Carbon Fiber handle ( or G-10) along with an M390 or XHP blade and be made available in SE & PE. So which pre-2005 models would you all like to see return? Which materials do you think would be ideal for that certain model you like?

Now that the meerkat has shown spyderco is willing to bring back some of the weirder knives, I'm itching for either a Dodo or a Salsa revival. Here are some suggestions:
Dodo in S35VN and red or brown g10
Dodo lightweight in CTS BD1 and blue frn
Salsa in RWL-34 and Gray Alumite #bringbackalumite
Salsa in Hap40 and green G10

There might not be enough demand since there are so many other models in this size range, but I really like the Navigator. It's like a chubbier Dragonfly or a much thinner Meerkat. No preference on steel. Olive or dark green G-10, please. :)

I'll second the Renegade, but I want a Powerlock on that bad boy. As for steel, M4 sounds good, bit I'd also love 4V or Vanadis 4E to make it one seriously tough hombre.

Well "I. M." I couldn't agree with you more. The RENEGADE truly was ahead of it's time in many ways. And to think that as of now we can only get one in truly "antiquated" materials kind of breaks my heart. I actually EDCed a RENEGADE in combo edge for about a whole year until I got my first C-44 Dyad to take it's place as my primary EDC. But I've longed for another RENEGADE for some time now.

As far as the Meerkat goes it's got a lot in common with the RENEGADE & BLACKHAWK models both>> because like those two models the Meerkat was at one time produced at the GOLDEN CO, USA Earth plant. A good friend of mine still has two of those GOLDEN made Meerkats and for that reason alone I would love to see a Sprint Run made at GOLDEN again.

But even on the other Forum I've found many of the guys who also want to see the return of the RENEGADE in newer, high tech materials. The RENEGADE in one of the Supersteels might just become my new EDC. Yeah I liked the model that much. And it was a mega-beast in Spyderedge.

My votes would be for either the C25 Centofante Jr. with the aluminum handles and rubber inserts (I loved the FFG that was offered in PE or SE), or the C17 Catcherman . Either of these brought back with modern steels and handles would be very pleasing to me, not to mention they should sell like hotcakes. I still stand by my statement from a few threads back, we need a C52 Caly Jr. to be brought back. I would prefer Machined (linerless) G-10 or (linerless) FRN. Keep the spirit the same as the original. Swedge, no jimping, fish scale texturing, gold bug in the blade and on the clip. What do you think JD?

Well "Xceptnl" you couldn't be talking to a bigger fan of the Catcherman than I am. I have every rendition ever made. Sadly I only have one of the full Spyderedged AUS-8 models which has become one of my all time favorites for use in the kitchen and outdoor use as well. I wish more than anything concerning the Catcherman that they would consider making at least a Sprint Run in full Spyderedge. And I want the exact same serration pattern that they used on the old AUS-8 version as well.

You've struck a good nerve mentioning the C-25 Centofante of which I've been a fan of for quite some time. But I even like it's big Brother the C-50 Centofante even better. But unfortunately Sal himself said a while back that all of the tooling for those models is long gone. But it doesn't keep me from still wanting the C-50 in both PE & SE.

Sure I would like to see a resurrection of the Caly Jr. C-52 model. But most definitely in one of the newer/better blade steels. The entire Calypso series and especially the C-54 ( big Calypso) have always been very sentimental favorites of mine for some time now. the C-54 is truly one of the very best Spyderedged folders of all time. And I did like the C-52 in SE in the stainless handled Version and the Micarta version>> because both those models had AUS-8 which I still think was one of their better blade steels for Spyderedges

I agree completely about SE blades and AUS-8. I think it is still a terrific steel and the properties of SE improve the edge retention in my uses.

Hey I'm telling all you guys that the original AUS-8 Catcherman in full Spyderedge was truly one of the most awesome hard use Spyderco knives I've ever owned. I want another one so bad and I keep hoping that Spyderco will eventually do some Spyderedged Sprint Runs.

Now I will admit that I like AUS-8 really well for serrated/Spyderedges. You can add ATS-55, GIN-1, and 440V to the list of blade steels that really do well in Spyderedge. And I bet Spyderco probably has some old AUS-8 stock laying around that they would like to use up.

Navigator II in Hap40 or super blue in a lightweight or a stonewashed SS handle. Those SS handles are so smooth and solid.

Absolutely perfect.

Well I think that Brother "Insipid Moniker" has truly started a rally for the return of the RENEGADE model. I can't tell you all how many times I've thought that if they did a Sprint Run of the RENEGADE with a Supersteel blade and a newly revamped handle that it would sell like wildfire. This desire for the return of the RENEGADE is really gaining serious momentum and I hope it doesn't stop. Like I said earlier it's one of the rare Spyders that's just as good in Spyderedge as it is in plain edge. Actually it was even a great combo edged model because I even had one of those too.

The RENEGADE & BLACkHAWK models both were target marketed to the biker community for the most part but it had a wide spread popularity and I truly believe if it was resurrected in updated materials you might just want to see it return to the main line up. I don't think a Sprint Run would be enough. Now I liked the RENEGADE better than I did the BLACKHAWK but I had friends that also like it a lot. It's had a cult following for many years. I believe it was the very first Spyder to have had G-10 scales and I would love to see how it would improve with a better grade of G-10 and a better blade steel. I don't think it was made with anything except GIN-1 which is really antiquated at this point.

The RENEGADE just has to be considered for a return at least in a Sprint Run but I think that model was so far ahead of it's time that it would be a super model if returned in revamped, updated materials. I don't think they could keep them on the shelves.

The Navigator II was a great Pre-2005 Spydie. I still carry my SE at least every other week. The Almite Walker model was another one that keeps popping into my mind as this thread keeps appearing.

Points well taken Landon>> because at that time period I was doing threads saying that Spyderco was truly the king of the small bladed folders. There were so many brilliant small bladed designs back then. Yeah the Navigator was truly an old classic Spyder. There was a very obscure model during that time that I always adored and it was the SPUR model. It's one that I think would be a great Sprint Run. Also the Pro-Grip was another small bladed model that got overlooked and under-appreciated.

It's really amazing at how many great designs during that time slot that just really got lost in the shuffle so to speak. The Jess Horn models were for the most part quickly forgotten>> because now a days it's only the most ardent Spyderco fan that even knows of their existence. That's why I wanted to pick the brains of folks regarding the models that are pre-2005 because there were a lot of gems during that era.

I dont know when it was made but Ide like to see a full sized Calypso with 204p and green G10

Or maybe M4 and Carbon Fiber!!!

My favorite Pre 05 model is still going strong... the Military!

If I am correct it came out in '96-97

Id support the Renegade in Carbon Fiber and M390.

Full size Calypso in the same?

Polliwog? Phoenix?

When were the Hossom models made? Because those were pretty cool fixed blades, green micarta handles and all. :)

Good choice too! The original Calypso is an oldie -- definitely pre-2005 -- that I wish I had. They did release a sprint a few years ago which I managed to get so there's hope they might release another.

The Poliwog & Phoenix both were both after 2005>> sorry. But I do very much agree with you on the RENEGADE with a Carbon Fiber handle and M390 blade steel. I would immediately buy two of them.

The big Calypso I would like to see with an original Micarta handle and just about any Supersteel blade they would want to use.
