What Production Knives Do You Consider To Be Over Priced?

I buy a lot of cheap knives and a lot of expensive knives, but sometimes the asking price is just way too high for the materials, workmanship, or both. Are there examples of production knives that you think don't belong in their price range?

Striders(kinda): I have mixed feelings about this one, as they basically offer the best warranty in the industry, more of a lifetime service plan. But having the same price as a sebenza is kinda.... Still gotta get atleast one in the future though ,love the design.

Emersons : the king of overpricy-ness. Seems to have good warranty but the fit and finish are known to be shoddy and materials are very very old school , not necessarily in a good way for the price. Not to mention they are far from being the the toughest folding tactical knives out there. More of buying the name.

Medford Praetorian: for the price, D2 is pretty cheap.

These are some that cross my mind for now

I've stopped trying to draw any lines. I said I would never drop $450 on a Chinese production knife (the Reate/Begg Mini Bodega) but when I caved and eventually did I discovered it was entirely worth it (subjectively, to me). The knife is all but perfect, and has superior fit and finish to custom knives I spent over a thousand dollars on.

That said, after the first $50 - $100, there are wildly diminishing returns as far as utility and function improvements. By about $200 you're into knives that have great materials, great function and great fit and finish, by about $400 - $500 you're in "it really doesn't get much better than this" territory. Spending more than that is just chasing some subjective appeal or seeking some brand recognition.

IMO, Hinderers were wildly over-priced before the market on them collapsed. Emersons are over-priced, because even at their price point you can get dramatically better fit and finish from other manufacturers, often with better materials and function as well. I think Shirogorovs are slightly over-priced and Rocksteads are wildly over-priced for what you get, but that's in the territory where you're really just paying for some brand-recognition/status symbol/"I can feel the magic" sort of thing.

Striders by around $200 and while I like the design, I just don't see how an S30V bladed SNG commands an over $400 price point. If people here think Emerson has unrealistic pricing, which I could agree with in part, then Strider is flat out ripping people off. FYI, I think that Emersons are around $40 too much per model.

Microtechs are also overpriced for what they are by around $100.

Ah but the lifetime service plan however, overpriced i agree with slightly, but ripping off is abit overkill, just MHO

I have been wanting an Al Mar but they are very expensive for what you get. I think they are probably expensive because it is a small company and they need to charge that much. Al-Mar's retail price on the Mini SERE is $350 for VG10, G10, and Japanese production.

This was worthy of a separate post;BENCHMADE

Benchmade had basically turned into a highend Gerber. There new models are boring, the discontinued most of the decent ones (710, Striker Series), and their prices went up AGAIN. While many of us like to complain about how ridiculous the price of Medfords and Hindrers are, most people are more likely to get screwed by purchasing something overpriced from Benchmade.

The standard Griptilian should be in line with the FRN Spyderco Manix price at around $83, but instead its $102. Much of the new crap from BM is over $110.

Does the Strider service plan cover reblading without or with a minimal fee? If so then I'd say they are more in the "pricy" category than the "overpriced".

This thread will be fun.

Emerson's are priced higher than materials are worth to me personally, given the lack of complexity. I feel similarly about Medford as well.

From many sources ive seen or read, all repairs, even reblading or even change out the titanium scale, are free, just need to pay for shipping. Which to me is amazing and i have to get atleast one one day.

First ones that come to mind are brmchmades(now with their map pricing), emerson, and al mar. Im a fan of them all but their materials and even f&f (except al mar) dont warrant the price theu ask. I dont think they are too far off though. $50 from each company maybe?

Benchmade is overpriced due to MAP and there sub par fit and finish on a majority (not a minority) of there products (as shown by customer reviews on many forums and shopping reviews). to many issues to list but the majority of them are blade grinds, side to side and up and down blade play, off center screw holes and pivot collars, and scales not flush. service is also debatable with half saying they had no issues and the other half saying they had to send the knife in more than once to get the issue resolved. basically benchmade knives are not worth the MAP pricing for most of the knives, even if they didnt have fit and finish issues, but thats a matter of opinion. you can find some legitimate benchmades at a very reduced cost from MAP in some cases, for example the benchmade 940-1 is 280MAP and i found it for around $220 give or take, and even then i think in comparison to other knife manufactures with higher end steel, more materials and more exotic materials, say Zero Tolerance, which cost around $240 MAP give or take, that $220 is overpriced and the MAP pricing is WAYYYY overpriced and ZT quality is the quality standard in knives. lets not also forget they are now charging huge prices for essentially a blade with very short metal internal scales and plastic body with axis lock. increased the prices across the board and brought out boring models for 2017.

Another apect to look at is most knife companies now have MAP pricing. this is pricing that is inflated so that larger big box stores cant charge less money to put small mom and pop shops out of business and everyone will make the same amount across the board. This is good for mom and pop shops but bad for customers because the prices are more than they were prior to introducing MAP pricing.

end of year clearance, excluding a knife pouch, and manufacture price changes are the only ways im aware of that can cause that MAP pricing to change.

The new benchmade 781 anthem that's got the 425.00 price -that is really really getting silly.and they should have put a plate inside to cover the spring for the axis lock like Kershaw does with their speedsafe.also it seems like Reate has gone from a 200.00 bargain to knives going for 425 with the epoch and 480 for the future model, once again I do not see what warrants that price tag; Shirogorovs prices bug me the most;great knife but 800 for a 95 or the neon ?And the king of the hated price tag goes to the model 111;I like the design, looks cool, but 950.00 for 2 pieces of carbon fiber,a liner backspacer and blade?I paid 750 for my Thorburn but look at what its got going for it compared to the 111;its like night and day material wise,as well as engraving and polishing, and the 111 is frickin beadblasted!i can get a sebenza and zaan(which I already have) for less than this. I don't care how well its machined and finished;give me a break! I am having a hard time justifying these prices..i think its really getting out of control, and I refuse to pay these prices.....

I am confused. People say Strider knives are overpriced, yet they are among the ones being sold the quickest here at the Exchange.
