What Puukkos Do You Like?

Whose got a good rhombic blank?

Same reply. YP-Taonta.

I handled a Finnish YP (Yrjo Puronvarsi) hand forged carbon FFG blade & my first thoughts was to do a stacked leather handle but after a while I decided on wood with a shape influenced by the blade shape. Wood is Briar root.

I can't read his website, are they through the link you sent or can they be found elsewhere?

I discovered that I can copy paragraphs and then open a window in GOOGLE TRANSLATE (or some similar translator site) - paste the text into the translator and read away. Doesn't always come out perfect but you can certainly get the gist. Might take more than a few copy and pastes to read a page of text.

As for PUUKKOs check out my recent thread about my PUUKKO discovery - https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/new-puukko-from-finland.1616048/#post-18458519

There are other threads too if you use the BF search.

Good luck with your quest.

So far my favorite is a malanika in 4v Ned is a Jelio same steel and I have a presnell in 52100 that works great as well little thicker behind the edge. Love birch bark handles great grip and just enough give to feel great in the hand

Nice to see the hidden tang puukot. These full tang knives with slab grips just don't have the same handle geometry or balance that a puukko must have. Calling them puukot is like calling a leuku a Bowie knife. It isn't. It doesn't want to be. Same with puukot.

I know I harp on this, I know I need to CTFO, but it really irks me. I'm becoming a crotchety alterkaker in my early 50s!

And you kids better get off my lawn!

I really like the Lauri PT blades, its easy to make one on your own. 80CRV2 seems to be a very popular UHC steel for pukkos.
I've seen that steel mentioned but it had this eluded me: does it contain chromium? I'm not really set up to temper a blade with a bunch of chromium lest it be an exception to that generality

Not much Chromium in 80Crv2. I'm not a bladesmith so I have no clue about its handling properties. The PTs are blade blanks.

Entropy Warrior -

I like Ahti (Reino Kamppila) puukko, esp.the Metsa and the Juhla.

Roselli Carpenter is traditional and one of my favorites. Benchmade Puukko 200 is a modern iteration, and for toughness (3v) and the wonderful Kraton grip, I'd go with that if I had a "one only" decision to make. I've drooled over Kellam's exquisite puukkos but they are pricey and I haven't (yet) come up with an excuse to buy one:rolleyes:. There are quite a few custom makers who post here whose puukkos seem equivalent to or even better than Kellam's, too. (Excuses rapidly running out...)

One of my favorites, made by Zhelyo Tenev

Factory made blades, the older Marttiini Ilves design

Something smaller thats easily put in the pocket, a Jarvenpaa vuolu puukko

Just FYI Kellam is a retailer, not a maker. Lots of their stuff you can get right from the maker for less. Ahti makes many of them I believe....

Thanks, that's good to know.

We have too many threads on puukko. At least two maybe three under the traditional knives forum. I mentioned the same thing about Kellam and Ahti puukko on one them a week or so ago. Anyway we can consolidate or even get a separate forum for puukko and other Nordic knives?

By the way Arathol, I love that bark sheath. One variation I don't have in my collection (287 vintage and a few modern puukko). Been collecting for many, many years - just an old geezer that likes puukko. I've posted many of my better or unusual ones on various threads over the years.
