What SAK are ya totin' today?

I rock the Rambler on my keychain and I love it. Everything I want, nothing I don't. The file is probably my most used and the knife the least since I carry a pocket knife.

The tinker I rescued from a junk shop just over a year ago when we arrived in Texas. It's been a steady pocket companion ever since. It may qualify as "The One."

Wow, that Tinker's previous owner must have gotten rid of it after not too long. I see the "Swiss Made" stamp on the shank. I'm not sure what year Victorinox switched the stamp, but I don't think it was too many years ago. Great find there.

Along with my usual SAK Executive, I've lately been carrying my new Pioneer X. Great knife. One thing that I find a bit odd is the nail nick is facing the shield side. Other SAKs like the Climber, Super Tinker, etc., with the larger scissors have the nail nick facing the other way which, IMO, makes them easier to pull out. I would prefer the Pioneer X have it that way, but that's a minor thing. Geez, there's always SOMEthing, isn't there? :)

I don't think he ever actually used it for much. Both blades still had the original factory edge, still very sharp and unused. The screw driver was a little dinged up, but a flat file fixed that in a few passes. but it was almost caked with grime, and a scrubbing under the faucet with some Dawn and warm water got a lot of black and brown gunk out. It's like he carried it around in dirty conditions, and then discarded it. For the first few months setting up the new house in Texas, it got a workout opening boxes and assembling stuff. The whole world is put together with phillips screws these days. I've touched up the edge a few times, especially after unwrapping my sister in laws sofa she ordered on line and came with a cocoon of cardboard and packing tape around it, but it's been great.

The Tinker is one of the best in my opinion. Jackknife, no peanuts any more or are they just resting? Honestly, I hope you're happy in Central Texas, but I just love the eastern hardwood covered mountains too much to leave. It's fairly windy here today, big leaf drop on going.

I used to carry a Tinker, but went back to the very first SAK that I carried many years ago for over a decade, the Spartan. Oddly enough, I find myself using the corkscrew a good amount for loosening knots in shoelaces and drawstrings that become too tight, more than I need a Phillips driver. Not to mention it holds my mini eyeglasses screwdriver. (But TBH, a lot of the time I use my pinky fingernail to tighten the screw on my glasses).

In fact, even though I like my Pioneer X a lot, I find myself still using my basic red Spartan (bought a couple years ago, not my original) quite a bit. It still feels good in pocket, even more comfortable than the basic Pioneer. The basic 2-layer models, the Tinker, Spartan and Pioneer, are still, IMO, the flagships of the SAK line.

I'm glad that discarded SAK has found a good home and a new life with you, Jackknife.

The Tinker and alox Soldier (90's vintage design) were my first SAKs. I gravitated to the larger ones as I find the blade length more useful. But, I like them all.
