What scares everyone the most about the outdoors and camping? For me it would have to be spiders (Blackwidow, Brownreclues) and snakes and also now more than ever tics and mosquitoes....I worry about that stuff more than wolves, panthers, bears, etc........Just wondering what eveyone else is afraid of.

Sudden, unexpected automatic weapons fire or explosions. They set my heart racing and cause me to pancake and look for a rout to thick cover no matter where I am. Old habits, a survival response that was once quite important but now obsolete for the most part. Nothing in the outdoors scares me but perhaps close lightning. And close tornadoes. Critters are just critters.

My wife when she is REALLY angry :)

there is actually a fair bit of stuff that scares me big time , but no real one that tops them all ...

Actually I havent thought about Tornadoes but yeah,, that scares me too. Im in Mississippi and we seem to have our share of them.

What scares me most about the outdoors. Other people. I am not a misantrhope, I work with people everyday. When I come across people on trails I am fine. But I have gone camping and had people come through my sight at night w/o announcing themselves and this bugs the hell out of me. I won't go to certain areas around me anymore because some shady characters are out looking for "drugs" or "parties." I think they are looking for people to rob. Last character I ran into go told that I didn't know of any parties, and please move along. I think the hatchet in my hand said more than I did.

I've had two encounters with mountain lions; one when hunting the other stalking something and we scared each other. Other than a pack of wild dogs, that's about the only four-legged critters that make me a little nervous. Two-legged critters are probably the biggest threat nowdays. I don't like spiders...I don't mind them, just don't like them on me:eek: I hate ticks, but that's just the nature of the outdoors and you learn to deal with the creepy crawlies. A couple weeks ago, I had a huge Camel Spider challenge my entrance to the crapper...if those guys were any bigger, they would take front stage on my fear-list:D

Other than unpredictable weather conditions and as long as you use common sense you can mitigate those threats as well.

Of course, the Blair Witch Project reminds me why I CCW when camping/backpacking;)

There isn't much scary stuff, naturally speaking, around here, except deer ticks(lyme disease) and the rare sighting of a rattlesnake. Of course, the vagabond rufian needs to be looked out for, but it's pretty rural for at least 45 miles in every direction, so everybody knows everybody, or at least it feels that way.

I would have to say my biggest fear when camping will be my little guy(he'll be two next summer) falling into this:

I'd say people. Too many meth labs in the woods these days with guy that are really wound up and armed guarding them.

The other real threat near me is rattlers, but they're pretty much OK, they give you ample warning, and eastern diamondbacks are rather timid, they'll either try to escape, or they will let you back off.

Being out at sea alone in the water and seeing a sharks fin, no boat no weapon. Stuff of nightmares.

Flying and open water.

Because of the nature of my job I have to do a lot of flying both fixed wing and rotary, I have not gotten used to it, nor do I think I will. I also do not like not being able to see land and the thought of being stranded in open water scares the bejeebers out of me.

Nothing I know of in the woods scares me. Chris

I forgot about that thanks Chris and xinel. Being stuck floating in the ocean with sharks is at the top of my list.

I would have to go with "people" as well. But once anyone wanting to cause trouble see me, that usually becomes a non-issue. But, when I have my little ones with me, I tend to be much more aggressive in acting protective.

I can take it as it comes as far as natures creatures and people are concerned, but I've yet to able to sleep during a storm in the woods for fear of a tree falling on my tent with me in it.

My #1 fear are people. They steal, and if they are not doing that they are vandalizing property for the cheap thrill of it. If they don't steal from the camp, then they are stealing from the house when one is at camp.

Other fears include forest fires. Having survived one in the 1980's it is something I do not want to ever go through again.

Thunder storms, again fire related. With alot of bedrock near the surface, getting a good grounding for electrical systems is hard in this area, and the vollunteer fire department deals with alot of fires started by lightening in this area.

Politicians, for what are they going to tax and ban next?
