What should I do?

I have never abused my contego (that's what my steel will apostate is for) and "stabbed into a tree" is a bit too harsh, I was trying to stick I in so I could free up my hand. And I don't think I could have unlocked it because it was in a reverse grip

i have beat the shit out of my contego, no failures of any sort other than some edge rolling. i think we are missing something here, please post pics of said knife and detail description of the acts that caused the failure and detailed pics of knife damage.

edit: i just proceeded to spine whack the hell out mine all cold steel style with no failure, it induced some vertical play... that said you have either abused this knife way beyond what it should be subjected to, or its faulty...

Thanks Wilson, what is strange to me is that this was my second contego with audible blade play, I sold the first because of this but the first never folded on me.

Thanks Sharp_edge I appreciate the input, at this point I'm just going to send it in and hope I didn't get a fake

Most knife manufacturers of folding knives include a warning in their manuals. This warning states that the knife is not intended to be used for stabbing. I think one runs a greater risk of injury when using a folding knife in such a way. One should be familiar with a tools limitations. However if this is something you normally do with this knife and it has been fine in the past, then perhaps the knife did fail. In any case, it doesn't seem to me like the mfg would be liable for such a use

no problem man, i bought it to be a hard use folder. since i got it there has always been a tiny bit of vertical play, now its a tad bit worse. that said its not a measurable amount of play just enough to feel. for sure send it in and see what they say..

I was hoping it would earn its way to the hard use role because I like to have confidence in my tools but I think I'll just have to stick to the steel will and cold steel. It really sucks because the contego has by far my favorite blade shape and to this point my favorite steel as well.

Post pics here before shipping, if its a fake and you got it at BHQ you're gonna need the knife for them to exchange it.

its probably the toughest folder i own, and would trust it more than any other if i had to. i think you just have a bad example, they slip through the cracks.

^^^ I agree!! The Contego is a BEAST!! I wouldn't stab mine into a tree though and if I needed both hands I would just put the knife in my pocket......so not really sure about this story.
You've been asked to post pics. The reason for this is so we can tell you if it's a fake or not. If it is a fake, DON'T send it to BM!! They will not return it! Send it in to Blade HQ since you bought it there.
PICS!!!
Joe

Out of curiosity, by what legal means does Benchmade have the right to confiscate a counterfeit knife?

I would imagine because it has their trademark on it, however I would think that they would have to ask permission from the owner or reimburse the owner

Couple of posters already suggested op to put up some pix of the contego, and I do so too. Plus, put a picture of your injuried finger in the hall of meat thread.

I do wish a fast healing of your finger. Dont blame yourself too much for sticking the folder to a tree. Just be careful in the future.

If your medical bill isn't in the tens of thousands and it is an authentic Contego, I'd bet that Benchmade covers you whether there's a dramatic defect or not. Cheaper than dealing with any potential litigation.

As for the "stabbing a tree" usage, I'll back you up there. I do it constantly. In fact, I did it with a Kershaw Link just a few minutes ago.

Sticking the knife into a branch while working is a lot faster than closing and pocketing it.

Think of it like a desk pen. It sits in its little holder for quick access. Much easier to jot notes with it than to open a drawer, remove a pen, unscrew the cap, post the cap or set it down, write the note and then reverse all the steps.

Now, if you're going all mall ninja on the tree, you're on your own, but sticking the tip of a knife into live wood to hold it for quick access is well within reason.

Thanks for the input I don't consider sticking it in a tree to hold it abuse, I've been doing it forever and this is the first lock failure that injured me

I have had two benchmade contegos now and both have had lock failures, the most recent was on Friday and it resulted in a pretty bad cut (to the bone on my finger). (...)

what is strange to me is that this was my second contego with audible blade play, I sold the first because of this but the first never folded on me.

Can you describe the lock failure on the first knife?

Benchmade is not the type of company looking to screw it's customers. If their at fault they will make good.

That said I agree with most here that you need to post some pic's of the knife. If it's a fake we will probably be able to spot it. If that's the case you should return it to BHQ for a full refund. I don't know if they will cover your medical expenses but they should at least refund your money and investigate how a fake got into their inventory. That would be very troubling indeed.

If it's a legit BM knife send it in to BM as they said. I'm sure they will make good on their promise to cover your medical bill's provided the lock failed and there's no signs of it having been modified or tinkered with. No doubt they will do some serious investigating of their own to find the cause of why the lock failed.

...and there are fakes out there of nearly everything. Yet If it Did come from Blade HQ they're a very up and up business. Just thinking I'd contact them as well. I assume you have photos of the knife with close ups of everything stated in your original posting. That's for backup even if Benchmade is going to take care of you.
