Well guys I'm ready to look into my first purchase from hi- what should I get?? (first ;))

I love the ak Bowie...
The larger(18 & 20) ak khukris are sweet too...
And I have to say I dig the uncle bill especiale, verry unique...

Input? Recommendations? Sneers & jeers??

Ooo and photos are delicious too!!!

you say this like you'll be able tos top at one.... ha ha ha ha ha!

seriously though, I'd start with a 15" Ang Khola or British Service, or if you're a big guy, a Chiruwa Ang Khola. From there, you'll branch out. quickly. Much to your wallet's concern.

Hey I said FIRST purchase remember ;)

What's the difference between the ang khola(ak) and the chiruwa ak? Cak? Whatever! :P

I wouldn't be able to get a British service just because of it's name- no offense anyone!

XanRa, you can't go wrong with either of the 3 that you mentioned. The Uncle Bill Especiale is a good choice. Surprisingly well balanced and a good chopping khukuri. The only caution is in putting it back in the scabbard. The upturned point will want to poke through the back edge of the scabbard. It can be avoided with a little care.

Pick the one you like the best and you'll be happy.

I'm Leaning towards the bill Definitely at the moment...

I need the ak Bowie too though.... Hmm....

Which to get first...

I think I need a kukri first- seeing as I have none:( Bowie later- then more kukris later :D

I don't know though!! The aks are nice and I know everyone can recommend them and stands behind them.... But the uncle bill is a bit more unique(and more stabby:D)

Hmm decisions decisions decisions...

I was thinking the Chiruwa Ang Khola was my perfect fit but its to thin...

Ethier a 18 or a 20 ak are more what I'm looking for... Size, length, width, etc...

I'm thinking Kukri for a first HI knife, then maybe branch out into other designs after that.

If you like 'em big, the 20" CAK fits the bill -- the big, i.e. 20" CAKs have spines than run 1/2"+, so if the standard 16.5" CAK was too thin for you, the big ones will correct that (the R-10 knife makes a good companion to any kukri):

BTW, the difference between the AK and CAK, is the AK has a full length hidden tang, the Chiruwa has a full, exposed tang with scales pinned on.

If you like big & stabby, I'd recommend the M43:

The AK bowie is a big hitter in a somewhat smaller package (by HI standards):

Personally, I think anyone's first HI product should be a kukri, and I'd recommend the CAK or M43 as the starting point.

I recommend getting in touch with HI about it. They'll know, according to your body type, experience, and intentions, etc. what will be best for you. I just got the Chiruwa (16.5) and it's pretty heavy, I'm about 6'ft and the blade length suits me just fine. On the other hand, I know that if I was a bit stronger, I could really handle this thing with more authority. It is a really awesome chopper! Are you looking for pure self defense, or are you looking for more of a work horse? I recommend the CAK for serious, heavy duty work. For SD I might say get something lighter, maybe WWII, Sirupati. I only own a CAK, but after using it a while, I want my next kuhk be a bit lighter. Right now I'm looking at Sirupati, WWII, and Chitlangi, maybe Gelbu Special, I need a good comparison on these puppies to really know what I want. You'll get something awesome either way.

Welcome XanRa!

....:D....First time i've ever seen a CAK described as too thin. Mostly people complain that they are too thick. I have a 15" CAK with a spine of nearly 1/2 an inch. A bit heavy on the belt, but chops thru stuff like nobodys business. Please show me what makes you think a CAK is too thin.

In order to properly guide you to a khukuri that will suit your needs, we would first need to know what you plan on doing with it and then we need a little info on you.. as to how big a person you are. When you go above 18" these things become massive and are not for the faint hearted to weild.

what he said^^^... once you hold a CAK in your hands, I doubt your gonna want more spine thickness, this thing is built like a tank. If you want more weight though, maybe a Malla or Ganga Ram?

He's probably looking at the HI store, which describes the CAK as:
Chiruwa Ang Khola

Between 16 and 17 inches overall, 3/8+ inches thick, about 1.75 pounds. Heavy duty knife. A good chopped and substitute prybar.

So, if you're looking for something 1/2" thick, the store description makes teh 16.5" CAK seem small.

Well I'm going for all out use- portability is not important- yes I'm the only person you will meat who gladly puts as much weight on my belt and in my pockets everyday- weight is NEVER important as far as I'm concerned- as long as it does it's job well- I'd carry a 50 pound f'ing pocket knife if it could do everything I told it too(and not break)
Ok weight rant over :P

Ok let's see I'm a larger guy(not in a fat way ethier) about 6'1 and 240ish

Experienced wise... Well what do you mean?

Back to weight rant- when chopping wood and it comes to axes- I comfortable use a 10 pound splitting head(maul?) as a regular axe(no I'm not normal thank you very much)

Oh yeah- I plan to use it as a... As a I use all large blades for- whatever I need too- chopping large amounts of wood, safely, cutting things(duh) actually I think I'm mostly going for wood processing, and I'm sure intimidation will fit in there somewhere too...

For the record I do not plan on wearing it on a belt... Much ;)

Yes 100%
but I'm looking for 1/2 and over
Any less it'd defeat the point of it being a kukri in my eyes

Welcome to the HI forum XR! I'd probably suggest first getting a khuk and trying it out, before definitively concluding that anything under 1/2 inch thick is not worthy of being a khukuri. There's a bit of technique you probably need to get used to, and having a lighter khuk has its advantages when learning the technique.

I'd suggest a 12 inch AK for all beginners, simply because that's what I started out with, and I was astounded at how effective it was in comparison to its 15-18 inch brothers. But since you're a bigger guy, you probably want to go with a 15 inch one. Either way, HI will not disappoint, that I am quite sure of.

I understand your viewpoint but I have a pretty good understanding on the difference and the technique behind chopping with a kukri... I want the thickness to
Have it- same with length

I'd rather have too much than too little

You're a large enough man to make use of a 20" khukuri, for sure.
As you'd primarily use it for wood chopping chores, the AK, CAK, Ganga Ram and Bonecutter have high recommendations for this task. Listen to Cpl. Punishments advise, he has much experience with the larger models and his assessments are spot on.

Ok so recommendation for a 18-20inch 1/2+ thick kukri? I prefer a full tang- for many reasons, but i guess it's not necessary... I just greatly dislike hidden tangs if I have other options

Cpl- what was that you said about a r-10 knife? What's that??
