That's a great looking knife bro, would make a perfect Camp blade !!!

I'm considering a chopper of moderate size to compliment my vic farmer...I'm thinking of either the classic usmc kabar, a mod 4 like Pit dogs, or a ranger rd-7 or 9. I'm liking the kabar for the price... It'd do chopping but mostly battoning, and do double duty for back up on reg campo chores in case my folder should fail (which it won't)

USMC Kabar a chopper?
All round knife, sure.
Fighting knife, OK.
Chopper?
Nah.
Buy a GB mini :D

The Ka-Bar fighting knives aren't much good for chopping. But I have a Ranger RD7, and it eats wood for a living. The RD9 would be even better, but also heavier.

I haven't used a kabar...I was considedring it in relation to it's sized as compared to the rd 7 ....popular concensus sems to be rdy is a good chopper??? the shorter it can be and still get away with light chopping the better as it will sometimes do double duty..Thanks...

The Ranger RDs are great knives for the harder stuff - chopping, batoning and so on. Much, much tougher than the Ka-Bar combat knives, but due to their thickness, not the best cutters. For a knife that can do some chopping without being entirely too heavy to use for other things, the RD6 would be good.

if you're look at the ka-bar usmc, check out the warthog. It's a little smaller, but i think because of the blades shape, it might be better for "heavier" work like chopping.

edit: almost forgot the link: http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_maker/e_through_k/kabar/kabar_warthog.html

Hey Riley if you have some money to burn bro, check out the TOPS site , they have such as the American Trailmaster which would make great short chopping blade !!!

Many dont get large blades till they see them in action and being used properly and then the lightbulb goes off.

Skam

Post some pics and learn us dummys up, I am always ready to learn something new and helpful. Chris

Too bad the lightbulb didn't go on.
But as long as you have plenty of belly for skinning all will be well.
:D

I have a friend who uses a ontario marine combat, which is basically a K bar with a rubber handle. He loves using it for chopping and batoning wood. It does have its limitations though. Anything bigger than 3.5" will take you forever. That when we decided to use a hatchet or a gerber folding saw to cut those pieces. My Rat 7 did a little bit better but it does need some weight on the blade. Batoning with it made things easy. We beat the snot out of both of them and they wanted more.
I do see the versitility in using a large blade for a chopper an all in one tool. I just prefer and feel more comfortable using other methods.

Riley, since nobody has mentioned Cold Steel, I will. I have a couple of Cold Steel Trailmaster Bowies that I bought when they were a lot cheaper and I had a little more money. They were also "seconds," though there are virtually no flaws in them. Those older Carbon V Trailmasters are my favorite big knives, short of machetes, and I think their blades are about 9-1/4 inches long. They are 5/16 of an inch thick at the spine and have a flat grind down to the edge so they'll still cut very well. You could beat on them with a club till the cows come home and not hurt them one little bit if batoning is your thing.
