For stockman I like to carry a 3.25" and use a 4.25" so a lot of times I compromise with something in between.;):)

Can't really answer, no special preferences in size except that really Large Stockman are better in coat pocket than trousered.

Like low riding Sheepfoot as it improves handling when using the master blade.

Have to dig out a few favourites though ;) Here, Queen No.26 which at 3.25 is out of any of the size categories, it might be 3 3/8" Nice Penknife style size and a low rider.

Another notable small is Buck's now extinct Yellow Delrin, blades lie flat due to 3 spring construction ,thus no krinking needed. Very handy, practical & durable

Moving up a size bracket, 3 5/8" the CASE in Chestnut Bone is a faithful companion, not such a low rider but do like the bone and modified Pen blade on these.

Larger still but round bolster, the Winchester Black Box sees a lot of carry, great snap here, that's vital:cool:

Finally, Big Guns (there ARE bigger:D) CASE, GEC, Böker. The Dixie Stockman is a smooth svelte carry, admire the different thinking about blade assortment too, and why not?;) Been looking for a user in Osage Orange for good long while..

So you see, One Size Fits All, any size:D:thumbsup:

Wasn't much of a stockman guy in the past because the extra high sheep's foot of my 34OT kind of put me off but I'm getting some interest in them now, and can't say I favor any specific size yet .

I really love that little one you got there.
Currently I've only got two Colonial rangers and a cool little kutmaster.
I'll have to get a picture of that one later, pretty interesting with a clip pen and coping configuration.

waynorth waynorth All highly desirable examples Charlie! But that Sleekster 2 blade:eek::cool: Sunk joint and that bone, just arrange THAT to be this year's Forum Knife please:D I'll even shut up about stainless options ;):D

Sometimes sheepsfoot blades ride too high but the kick can be filed down easily. I have done this on all the 34OT's that I've carried.

That little one is a schrade walden 808. It's a pre-delrin and pre-swinden knife and is smaller and slimmer than the later variants. They made that pattern for many years and are easily found, most commonly with delrin and swinden. Also look for the old timer 108 and uncle henry 807. They are all the same pattern with the UH having stainless blades. My dad carries a 2 3/4'' schrade stock daily. They are very capable little knives and I would urge you to try one.

I think I did eventually file the kick, but it had zero snap so I eventually turned it into a single blade friction folder.

I own a couple stockman patterns; one Schrade and a Boker. Maybe one more.... I generally favor a jack knife with two blades. In the past, I would have always chosen the ~4 inch or slightly larger size, but now I would lean toward your "medium" class stockman or "small" class. The change has to do with generally using fixed blades more and less use for work where a full grip might be necessary. I have a number of the GEC 42's, so you can see I do or did really like the 4" size.

I own one small, one medium, and three large stockmans. No extra large yet.

I think the large (3 7/8") is perfect. The medium is just a little too small--even the main clip blade seems small to me--and I don't like the blade rub that seems to plague this pattern. The Schrade stockman has three blades on two springs, but there is no blade rub, and the main blade seems sufficiently large. The carbon steel takes a good edge, and the knife just feels right. The Buck is great too. Three blades on three springs. Great size and feel. The Colonial in the bottom of the pic is a cheapie (paid $10 at a gun show). It has liners between each blade! And bad blade rub on the sheepsfoot. Not sure what kind of steel it is.

I generally prefer the small stockman (2 5/8” - 2 3/4”). I also use a cheap large stockman (4”) for rough work around the house. (Small better in the pocket, large better in the hand.)

If I had to get by with just one it would probably be 3 1/4”.

Which is best Charlie? A two-blader with a spey/pen or a two-blader with a sheepsfoot?

In my view, either:D Or why not something different as in California Clip/ Spear? Or use the Dixie Skinner format but replace Wharncliffe with Drop-Point, not at all bad....;)

I have three mediums and one large, so I guess I had to vote "medium."

Blade rub on stockman's always bothered me. Seems to be the norm rather than the exception.
