What steel types have magical spell over you?

I have tried many steels. I like alot of steels particularly carbon. But lately VG-10 seems like magic to me.

I have had excellent experiences with VG-10. My spydie delica which I edc'd for 1.5 years and my new F-1 are really great performers.

My Delica has never needed a course stone in 1.5 years of everyday carry.

I have even preferred it over carbon which if you check my posts over the last 9 or so years you would see overwhelming love of carbon.

I am in awe of VG-10

A-2. Nothing, so far, has out cut it. Although, INFI, is on the way. This will be interesting. The CPM's hold magic also.

VG10 really likes me so I really like it. It is a dream to sharpen. Easiest for me so far, but A2 is about the same.

My s90v is quite nice, too, but I don't have much experience with it yet.

154cm is also a pain for me to get an edge on, and lately I think the edge has been disappearing just sitting in my drawer. Might be just me, but they seem duller in the morning...weird.

I can get a great edge on Byrd steel, but it doesn't hold it like VFG10. At least I don't think it does.

If I had my druthers, I'd rather have VG10 than just about all the others.

Short answer: All of them.

Long answer: Although all are good, I have a particular fondness for non-PM stainless steels with 1% or higher Carbon content.

ATS-34 and VG-10. Oh ZDP-189 has some magic words associated with it, when I do have to sharpen it. But they're not repeatable in mixed company!

Aogami Super Blue, CPM M4, 52100, ZDP 189, and CPM D2. Aside from the first one not neccesarily in that order.

They all are - I'm a metallurgist !! Actually the ones I have that impress me are 154CM, VG-10, S30V.I'm going to start testing a Fallkniven 3G in the TK-2. It should be close to S30V.

Yeah, they know you by now.....that's why they're trying to get to know some OTHER people:D

Cheers,
Jon

Aw c'mon, the guy has been a member for 3 years and only has 10,832 posts!

Now, as for magical steel:
My downhill ski edges have been impressing the heck out of me lately. The steel stays sharp, never chips, is extremely rust resistant and generally holds the same edge from the start of ski season to the end. Considering the elements they are exposed to and abuse they take, the steel really holds up well. I have been wondering what they use.

As far as dedicated knife steel goes, 3V, S30V and 3G are pretty advanced compared to what we were able to buy even ten years ago.

Pretty much any carbon steel.
Sandvik's various stainless grades.

Gawd, my taste is steels in so...so...pedestrian...:D:thumbup:

I got to try s30v and ZDP. They seem like they could have the magic.

I was never one to jump on the modern magical steel quest but VG-10 got me started.

I love 52100 and 1095 but VG-10 is a lot better to me.

favorites in order:
3V
S30V (never had the pleasure of trying S60&90V)
VG-10
154CM

oh yea almost forgot ZDP-189 is awesome!!

Morimotom---Don't you belong over in the Spyderco Forum? Oh, I repeat, tool steel.
