What steel types have magical spell over you?

INFI of course :)

If you're talking about steel that isn't obviously made by elves and/or aliens ;) I quite like BG42, VG-10, S30V and ZDP-189.

Yea, VG10 does it for me. I also find the 154 from Benchmade is a really durable steel. Both sharpened at 30 degree.
The s30V is really nice but I do find it a little more difficult to sharpen.

L6.

I have a Smatchet made out of L6 that I spent a camping trip beating the hell out of, and came out unscathed. If it was not so heavy, I'd take that Smatchet on more trips.

1095.

This steel has been around forever it seems & it still works just fine.

ATS-34/154CM.

I remember when these steels started becoming popular on production knives. Up till them the average production knife was 440C or 440A. ATS-34, and later 154CM, seemed to be the start of production companies looking at the steels custom makers were using.

S30V does it for me. This is what most of my folders and a couple of my fixed blades are made of. It sharpens easy enough and holds an edge for quite awhile. I am also really starting to take a liking to SG2.

I must add another steel to my picks.. H1 from Spyderco. Initially I was not all that impressed but after a month of heavy duty cardboard box cutting the darn thing seems to get sharper with use. H1 is not a pretty steel, it does seem to attract dirt and smudges and it is not high gloss. I use a Talsman serrated at work on boxes and it just rips through them with little effort.

My experience only with folders and I am absolutely satisfied with VG10 and S30V.

Sandvik 13C26. From Kershaw it's okay ... heat treated w/ cryo to HRC 60, it's my favorite. Takes an edge like a properly heat treated carbon steel, is very tough and stainless.

D2!

It may not be considered THE BEST steel, but one of my very first knives was a Master Skinner from Dr. D2 himself - Bob Dozier. Bought it from AG Russell and still have it to this day.
I like many other steels, but I have many fond hunting memories where that knife was at my side and so I'll always have a 'soft spot' for D2...

Regards,
Mike

Right now, 8670M, it's amazing. Other steels, A2 and O1. Just can't beat old school steels.

BG42 always gets my attention. A nice mix of being easily sharpened and maintaining an edge.

VG-10 is a very close second.

INFI, SG2, S30V, VG10, ZDP-189...

If it's been made into a fine knife, I like it...some of my favorite knives are only 440A...or 420HC...

Mmmm...steel...:)

420J2 and "Surgical Stainless". They have a magical hold over me just like those cool fantasy knives made with them.
