What, Strider?!

I recently broke half of the blade off of a Strider-Buck folder (impressive, eh?) It's a tank of a knife so naturally I want to get it fixed.

I've been calling Strider a couple of times a day for the last 4-5 business days. Nobody has every picked up, the call always goes to voicemail....and the voice mailbox is full. I went to the Strider website, looking for warranty info and repair costs, etc.Their FAQ page directed me to some some third party search engine that's hawking Alaskan cruise packages and Disney Land tickets. This makes me a bit hesitant to enter my personal information in to their "contact us" box. For all I know, I am going to get my identity stolen by the recently deposed King of Nigeria.

I can't call. I can't email. My only option is to enter my personal info in to a shady website and hope for the best? What the hell, Strider? I realize that they aren't some multinational corporation with people manning the phones 24/7 and they make a great product so I'm willing to give them the benefit the doubt...but this is just unprofessional.

How should I get this resolved? Has anyone had similar problems?

I have an awesome (first run?) Strider fixed-blade that was my deployment BFK....because it was awesome and because if I ever broke it, I figured that I could get it replaced. Im afraid to use the damn thing now.

You're barking up the wrong tree.
It's a Buck knife, not a Strider.
Call Buck, although it's been long discontinued, so you may have no luck.
But don't call Strider. They'll do nothing for it, as they had nothing to do with its manufacture.

First off you have a Strider BUCK. This means it is a collaboration between buck and Strider. This means that it falls unders Buck's warranty. This also means that prying with the blade is not covered.

So, bottom line is your out of luck and will be paying to get your blade fixed. And I dont think its impressive you broke your blade. I think its a stupid abuse of a good knife.

have you tried contacting buck? since technically they made the knife and strider just gave input on it (cause it was a collabaration) you will probably have better luck there as well.

Yeah, what the above posts said, not quick enough on the send button . . . :)
Be safe.

Contact Buck and see if they will do anything for you. I kind of doubt they will but you can try. Wheather your fixed blade is an actual strider or buck colab, you should be able to use it with confidence. Folders are usually thinner and consequently break easier. Their intended purpose is for cutting, not prying. There are folders that are exceptions to this though, such as an smf/smp/pt strider. With all the talk about how tough striders are it is easy to see how you could have confused the models and companies. Don't let negative remarks deter you from this forum. Some of our members forget what it is like to first be exposed to the knife nut culture. You are obviously new to forums and possibly to quality knives in general. Stick around and check this place out you'll get a good education and an empty bank account!

...BTW welcome to the forums.

Cheers!
Brandon

I am hardly impressed that you busted a buck striders blade in half. If I was you I wouldn't bother doing anything since it is an old knife and you abused it.

If you want to pry, then buy a real Strider.
For some unfathomable reason, they are impressed if you break it doing stupid things.
Just dont polish it, or you void the warranty (odd but true).
If you want to contact them, over at USN is the way.
Phone calls are usually not answered.
E-mails are often not answered in a timely fashion either.
But they do respond on USN.

1. Call Buck.
2. Dont pry with a knife for the fun of it. Strider have experienced so many blatant abuse of warranty they are thinking of changing their warranty.

Like the other have said; talk to Buck. I think you'll find their customer service a bit better than Stider's.
I also suspect they may help you out (for a "small fee") even if the damage is considered to be due to "abuse".

From their warranty page...

THE BUCK FOREVER WARRANTY

The Buck Knives Forever Warranty is pretty much what it says. A Buck Knife is built to last. But if for some reason, your Buck is defective due to materials or workmanship, you can return it to us for repair. No matter where you bought it.

We will repair your knife, including parts, labor and or replacement with a new knife at our discretion. Keep in mind, repair is not always possible or practical. We will replace your knife with the same or one that is comparable if your knife is no longer available. Please note if your knife has sentimental value when you send the knife to us.

REPAIRS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY

If your knife needs to be repaired, please send it to us for evaluation. Don’t try to repair it yourself. Self–repair will void your warranty, not to mention that it could cause self–injury.

Reasons why we may charge you a small fee for a repair:
  • Damage caused by misuse or abuse.
  • Failure to care, clean and maintain your knife.
  • Damage due to self–repair.
  • Knife loss due to shipping to and from the Buck Knives factory
  • Damage due to dismantling or tampering with your Buck knife
  • Sharpening your Buck knife on a grinder.

Good luck.

Aren't the guys at Strider the reason people beat on their knives because they boast how strong they are and offer a no question asked warranty? What did they think would happen? I won't own a Strider anyway so I don't mind but it seems like they brought it on themselves.

I'm not sure about other people, but I typically try not to rely on the warranty of knives. Mostly because of the wall of intimidating fine print giving me 50,000 different reasons why they won't cover my merchandise.

Why all the venom spewed at the OP? Sure he probably broke that knife doing something he shouldn't have been doing but the guy was asking a legitimate question about how to get in contact with a company that is very hard to get a hold of?

Strangely enough, I just had the exact same problem. I wanted to send my SNG back to Strider for some work but was having trouble getting them too. I went back and found a recent thread where the poster asked if they were still in business because - wait for it- yep, he couldn't contact anyone there. That guy got raked over the coals for asking that.

WTF? It seems to me that attempting to contact a manufacturer shouldn't be that hard. Even asking how or if they are around shouldn't be the basis for flaming a guy either.

I finally got someone through e-mail but it wasn't exactly the wellspring of information I was hoping for; very short quipped answer of send it in with $15.

I'm a little nervous about sending a $400 knife back with no more information than that but I'm going to try it as an experiment. I want an new SNG with Gunner Grips bad. I may even go for an SMF after that, but first I'm going to see how this goes. If it all works out well and I get my knife back in good shape and a timely manner with no problems in between then fine. But if it goes the other way, I'm through with them.

I've read all sorts of things about this company both good and bad. I'm going to make up my mind based on my own experience.

That type of abuse is DEFINITELY NOT covered under Buck's warranty. That may not make a difference to a company like Buck. Been long ago, but i broke the blade on a favorite knife. A Camillus made Buck. I sent in the knife with a letter acknowledging that it was a abuse and not a warranty situation. I asked for cost of repair. They sent the knife back with blade replaced and a note saying that they hoped i had not been inconvenienced. Like i say, long ago (1980). Just contact them and be honest with them, and see what they say. I think Buck goes way above and beyond the call, to make sure that their followers are happy. If it were me, i would offer to pay to have it repaired, if they charge you, man up. I would bet they will take care of you. Henry

Not sure if anyone has said this yet  but you should definitely call buck and buy a prybar from home depot.

lol... buck made the knife.. call them and have discuss the details. How did you break the knife in half??

I dont know  but I do know they want to change the warranty, or so I have read in a thread started by the Strider founders.

Hell of a lot of vitriol being spewed here by people talking about "gross abuse" when the OP never said how his knife broke. I never see the word "pry" appear in his post, and it hasn't been edited. Might it have been horrible abuse? Yes. Might he have dropped it? Yes. Do knives break that way? Oh yes.

The two things you've been correctly told, OP, is that it is a Buck product so they're the ones to call, and yes, it's an old knife so they may not have any spare blades left to help you out with. The rest of the lecturing here is people making assumptions and talking to hear themselves talk.
