What to buy....? Better than Benchmade?

since you have excluded Spyderco, you can't beat a benchmade for <= $100.

So just pick a benchcmade.

Going to try to go to a local shop today. The prices are so high there however that there is no way I can buy there. Example: I can buy a 942 for like $112 online but at this shop they want like $140.

I just don't want to go in there and sample 10 knives and leave. That just doesn't seem nice.

I really like Benchmade...the best deals from them are probably the D2 minigrip from cabela's, which I own and love...the RSK is sort of Benchmade and that's really cool. The scales do look and feel cheap, but trust me here, those things are very tough.

I really like the switchback too, but that's probably out of your price range.

The Spec Bump can be had for ~110. I think you were getting on to someone for this....you need to get the knife you want if it's within a reasonable range.....it's worth the extra 15 dollars or whatever to get whatever you really want, even if you have to save another few weeks. Trust me on this one.

I recommend you hang around and use Spydercos until you adjust to the spyderhole.....it just takes a little while to get used to seeing it. Like your first classic car with fins, kind of an acquired taste.

I really like the CRKT M16 and M21 line (AUS8 only). They're wayyyy under your price range, but they're top knives, coming from a guy that does have a few Benchmades and Spydercos....

To me anyway, the epitome of one-hand-opening knives is the AG Russell One-Hand Knife. You may be able to find the original hand-finished K87 model for under $100 on the secondary market, and there are two factory-made models that are ~way~ under $100. My favorite of the factory One-Hand Knife models is the plastic handled Feather Lite. Available in two steel choices and two blade shapes. Priced from $35 - $50.

Spyderco and Benchmade are great brands too. The Benchmade Griptillian is a good knife for the money - an interesting lock, great quality, but a 'chincier' handle than the more expensive models. I'd also like to mention that many of the Spyderco models have downplayed SpyderHoles - the Kiwi for instance.

Best Wishes,
Bob

I seen the 710's goin for around a $100 a little while back.
The often quoted, Best production folder in the world, by myself an many other people here.

None of my other production folders compete with my BM's, for quality of materials and fit an finish.

Thier customer service is top dog aswell, need anything or help an they will be there for you.

I feel the same way about the hole thing, it is useless to me, for one, in tastes, second is in function, too hard to operate with cold weather gloves on.

This is crazy. I just called my local shop and asked what they wanted for the 940 and the 942. They want $165 each. What in the world are they thinking? I can get this knife for $112 online from a VERY good dealer.

I about crapped my pants when he told me this on the phone. Why in the world would I pay $53 more for the thing?

Is this how it is at most brick and mortar shops?

It depends...it seems like the more specialized the knife place, the more expensive the knives. Back in my hometown, I would go to Army Surplus or the local gun store and I could pick them up for 15 dollars more than online. And I was willing to pay it--I could check it out before I bought it, and that was worth a lot to me.

But at dedicated stores, like House of Blades or the Parks Mall, most of the knives cost about what Benchmade says they should....

I still buy lower end knives from stores...they seem to be more likely to suffer from defects, which makes it worth more, and the price jump is much smaller.

Mostly I just use them to check out knives though. It's not being rude--if they offered competitive deals, which I'm there to see, I'd buy it. Car dealers don't expect me to walk in, take a couple test drives and expect me to buy at least one car, particularly when the dealer charges 90% more than I can get elsewhere and we both know it.

I like Benchmades and I own a bunch of them, but I don't think they have any kind of monopoly on quality. Aside from Spyderco, you should also look at the mid-level entries from Camillus (Heat) and Kershaw (Centofante, Leek).

I also agree with Bob W that you should check out the A.G. Russell One-Hand Knife. The versions that are not hand-made are within your price range and I suspect the design has special appeal for someone coming from the slip-joint world. It's one of my favorites too.

Dont feel bad about handling the dealers knives and not buying. If the prices were close to being competitive they would sell those knives. If you are not concerned with looks get a D2 grip you will not be disappointed. For a little more than $100 you can get a 710M2. New Graham has them for $115 I think.

The Ares is a great knife and more sheeple friendly than the 710. I have both and carried the 710 over the Ares. Mainly because I liked the overal feel of it, it's a little bigger, etc.

I have a large Sebenza, Al Mar SERE 2000, Lone Wolf T2, Spydercos, etc, but the 710 has been my primary EDC for years. I picked up the Doug Ritter Grip and it became my EDC for awhile, but I'm back to the 710. The 710 just feels better in my pocket and the construction is much better. The Ritter's handle just feels cheap and the large version lacks full dual steel liners. Although I love the blade shape on the Ritter. I wish they would make something like the Ares of 710 (full dual steel liners, G-10 handle slabs) with the Ritter blade.

Maybe you should consider Buck Strider, Mcusta and Seki-Cut models also. I don't say those are better than Benchmade, but both are high quality knives and well within your price range.

The only folder as good as Benchmade is Spyderco, give them a chance and you'll find you like the hole. I used to be a thumbstud guy also. If you buy Benchmade get a 710HS, if you want something smaller I'd go with the 940 Osbourne, or the mini-Griptillian, I also really like the 690. Check out Spyderco's Endura and Delica also (esp. the new ones coming out). The only non-Spyderco/non-Benchmade I'd recommend are the Boker Gemini series or Walter Brend model, very good and inexpensive but not in the same class as Spyderco or BM. Also I like the Al Mar Sere 2000, but I think you'll be happiest with a Spyder or BM.

As to the $100 mark, I just saw a benchmade 941, green scales, at the local GI Joes for $97. Almost grabbed it, but I'm holding out for a small sebbie.

So, 710
What710 was710 the 710final710 choice?

Was it a 710?

Highlight my post for my guess.

WarRaven,

That's pretty funny :)

I still am up in arms about it. I'm going to have to just buy one in the next day or two I think.

I've actually given the 710 some thought as well as an 806D2.

I was going to stay small but I just figured after doing some research that it seems that as long as you are not "looking for trouble" and you are calm and cordial with the cops you'll most likely be OK.

I'm still not sure. I want a 732 Ares, a 710HS, an 806D2, also a 707, a 525, and a 705-401.

I think I'm going to have to throw them all in a hat and buy the one that I draw.

:D

I still like the BM 910 Stryker for a "truck" of a knife that has nice roundy ends that don't gouge pockets and just a heavy duty mofo.

:)

I broke down and bought that 941. My first Axis lock, and I'm impressed. The edge was good out of the box, with a couple nicks in it. 2-3 minutes on the Sharpmaker, and it was hair popping sharp. And the axis lock is so sneaky smooth this thing opens as fast as my kershaw mini-task, and closes one handed. Fits nicely in the pocket and the blade shape is growing on me. Not even a hint of buyers remorse with this one.

I cary a benchmade presidio every day. I is built like a tank. It'll cut through just about everything and still flips open with silky smoothness. I had a camilus titanium cheek-lock. The presidio fits my hand better. I would recommend this knife every time. I found several other models too small for my hand or not "perfect" the presidio is the ONE for me -- after trying 6 or 7 other!

Just my $00.02
