What to buy....? Better than Benchmade?

This is crazy. I just called my local shop and asked what they wanted for the 940 and the 942. They want $165 each. What in the world are they thinking? I can get this knife for $112 online from a VERY good dealer.

I have a similarly frustrating situation where I live. There's a local mom and pop gun shop that has been here forever. I was pricing Leupold riflescopes online and figured I'd give the gunshop a try since they were right down the street from where I work. So I call and say "I'm looking for a Leupold Vari-X whatever and I specified the model number. They quoted me a price of over $100 more than the lowest internet prices I had found. So being the brash guy that I am, I point out the price differential. The response I get was "well, we have higher overheads than those online retailers." So my response was, "Okay that's cool, the next time I'm looking to buy something from a high overhead gunshop, I'll call you first". *Click*

Oh yeah...your knife choice. Don't forget the Mini-Skirmish. It's a hair or two over $100, but it's about as bombproof a knife gets with the titanium handles and S30V.

 I'm with Slatts, the mini skirmish is a bit over your $100 mark, but well worth it great materials, frame lock, and Super smooth opening. May be one to be considered:) .

My advice is to not buy the Chinese Griptilian knockoff I saw at a PA junk shop. Without the axis lock, of course.

Even though I generally prefer Spydercos (personal preference), I think that Benchmade knives are excellent value for the money. If the models you mentioned are comfortable for you, I would not look further. You would be getting a lot of bang-for-the-buck, in my opinion.

Well said from a spydie fan.
I agree, a lot of bang for the buck from a BM.

Just my .02 on it all

I haven't found much from Benchmade that "I" like in the +/- $100 range.
they all tend to fall into the $150 +/-

However, at that price point you're in line with Emersons, so for me, I'd rather go with EKI

In the truly sub $100 market, Spyderco seems to have the best amount of quality, and variety...I've been incredibly surprised, and impressed with $50 knives from Spyderco!
