What to buy my boyfriend?

Hey there, I'm new, so please forgive my ignorance about... pretty much everything.

My boyfriend is really in to knives. His birthday is coming up fairly soon, and I'm hoping to get him something knife-related. Of course, I'm the clueless girlfriend, so I've come here for some suggestions!

I'm not especially knife-savvy, but here is what I know of his collection offhand.
-He has a bunch of knife sharpening stuff already so I probably shouldn't get him anything along those lines
-He's mentioned wanting to take up sheath-making, but I really wouldn't know where to start about that!
-His favorite folding knives are Spyerco, and he owns at least one SOG

I'm desperately hoping he doesn't read this - and if he does, at least turns back now, before anything is spoiled. HINT HINT. Anyway, this seems to be the place to be for knife info, so I figured it couldn't hurt to try.

Basically, I'm looking for affordable, not terribly exotic suggestions. My budget is around $50 right now but I'd consider going up to the $100 range. Knife care items and/or sheathmaking things (because I know nothing of them) are what I'm thinking of, but of course if you have any other suggestions, let me know!

Thanks in advance!

I think this one is pretty simple. The new Spyderco Manix has universal appeal, I think it cost about 80 USD and it's very spydy-ish. I think it's your best bet in that price range.

If he doesn't have the new Spyderco Manix 2 yet, give it a look. Around $85. It just came out.

Thanks for such quick replies! I had a look at the stock of the two local knife-stocking places (well, their websites), and the Manix 2 doesn't show up in either of their listings. I will check, but I only have about a week, so not enough time to order anything online - any secondary ideas?

Manix 2 +1 :)

If you're leaning on the cheap side, a Tenacious/Delica/Endura would be good choices.

On the "almost $100 or maybe a bit over" side I'd look at the Military/Paramilitary or UKPK.

Right arond your price point are a lot of Salt (H1 steel, rustless) knives that are very good users. They come in yellow or black handles, Ti clips, H1 rustless blades, and a variety of shapes and sizes.

the 2 that come to mind that I wish someone would gift me are the Spyderco Pacific Salt, the yellow one (this one will never ever rust) and the limited run of G-10 Kershaw Tyrades that are now available (I like the orange one). Great steel composites and trick concept....Lucky guy!!

a week, that's plenty of time for a knife to get mailed to you :D

that being said Benchmade, Kershaw and Spyderco knives are great choices, if anything most men are practical, I'd say talk with him about what he wants for a new toy, unless he hates picking out his own presents.

What asking him what he wants may communicate that you care about what he wants, and if I were him I'd have to say my girl friend being interested in my hobby would be better than just a present.

I'll have to answer based on what I'd like in his spot.

For a folding knife, I'd take the Kershaw G10 Tyrade. It's a solid knife with great blade steel and good looks. The price can't be beat for a knife this quality.

If you think he might enjoy a project, try the Spyderco Mule. It is a fixed blade that comes without handle slabs or sheath. It's a fun and relatively easy project to put a handle on this knife. It also adds a personal touch. They come in various steels, all of which are top of the line.

The Tyrade (ignore the wood handle, the stock ones are G10):

A CPM M4 Mule I did up in African blackwood:

Knifecenter.com has them in stock.

Of course, you could wait till friday and get him a ZDP-189 Mule.

Can't wait? Get the S90V Mule. :D

You could get him a Swick direct from Spyderco for $39. They are only making 500 of them. He could then make a sheath for it.

I don't know where you are, but here in the heartland I can order knives from either www.knifeworks.com (Louisiana) or www.knifecenter.com (Illinois, IIRC) and have them here in 2-3 days with regular shipping. You've got time to order the Manix 2 if you hurry. On the off chance it doesn't arrive you could always just print a picture of it and give it to him in an envelope. Most knife guys would be willing to wait a day or two for some Golden (Colorado) goodness.

For sheath making supplies the usual go-to place for leather working is Tandy Leather. I think they still sell some sheath kits, plus they definitely stock the basic tools. They still have some retail stores in larger cities, so you could have a chat with the guy behind the counter for advice on basic tools and supplies.
