What to buy my boyfriend?

You can purchase knives right here on blade forums if you are having trouble finding a knife at an online retailer.

I just realized that I neglected to mention that I live in Canada. This is why I figured a week wouldn't be long enough, seeing as delivery from the US takes 1-2 weeks typically! That, and I only have about $30 USD in my paypal account.

Either way, thanks everyone! I'm writing these suggestions down for when I take a trip to http://www.shooterschoice.com/catalogue_front.htm and a place called House of Knives - the latter of which has terrible selection, but occasionally has randomly good things according to my boyfriend.

Any thoughts on knife care/hobby stuff? If there's anything beyond sharpening I'd like to hear it!

You are a good girlfriend! Actualy doing some homework before you buy the lucky guy a knife.

I would say +1 to the benchmade mini-griptilian. It would be a great knife for him to carry around all the time. It is a smaller and more utilitarian knife.

Maybe a SOG AEGIS would be to his liking. It is more of a tactical knife, if that is what he is into.

JUST read your last post, I was going to mention a fast shipper, but US only, sorry.

Everyone beat me to it. I also suggest the Manix 2. He most likely doesn't have this knife yet because it's so new.

Also, if you're paranoid he might have it, just look through his Spydercos. The Manix 2 is unique because of the ball bearing lock. There are a few other ball bearing lock Spydercos, but none that have the shape of the Manix 2.

You should be able to find a leather working store if you live in a large city, although I don't know if Tandy operates outside the US. Do you have a hobby store of some kind nearby?

Ha! Thanks for saying so, but I feel like a worse girlfriend for not thinking of this till now. My resources are almost as limited as the time I have left - and the knife stock around here is lousy.

The Griptilian is ringing a bell for me! I think he may have mentioned it. What sort of price range is it?

I've never heard of the SOG Aegis - I think he's more into practical knives though, he loves the outdoors, and on our last camping trip he frequently used his to cut wood. The axe was rusty and the knife-chopping was much more impressive in any case :P In any case, if it's useful it still might be a good idea...thoughts?

I live in Ontario, Canada - close to a city called Kitchener. It's not especially huge but it might have a hobby store.

If I wanted to put together a small sheath-making starters kit, what might it include?

As far as hobby stuff goes, there's general maintenance (sharpening, oiling) and then there's modification (handles, sheaths, grinding, pocket clips). Modification can get complicated, and is highly dependent on the tools and materials available.

He definitely doesn't have it, I know his Spyercos by sight if not all by name (though my favorite is his Delica). I'm more concerned that the STORES might not have it, if it's so new. Does it normally take a long time for US stock to reach Canada?

Probably bit late this time around but for Xmas or next your you should consider a year's subscription to one of the knife mags - like Knives Illustrated. Getting a new mag every couple of months

I build mine pretty simple. I bought a set of hand punches, a mallet, a couple rolls of rawhide (which I rarely use), a package of rivets, and a selection of 12"x12" sheets of leather. I spent probably $30-ish to get this stuff and have made a handful of sheaths for knocking around. Of course, you can get much better gear that I did, mine was purchased for the purpose of doing a personal project quickly.

As a fellow Canadian I can attest to the fact that online orders usually take 9-14 days. That being said, I strongly urge you to reconsider going to House of Knives.

Typically the prices there are around DOUBLE what you would pay for the same knife online.

Especially with your budget (which is about what mine usually is), I would recommend buying something online, so that you can get the most for your money, even if it does end up being late.

I don't think any guy would have a problem hearing "Sorry, I ordered your present online and it will be here in a few days". Wouldn't bother me anyway

The mini griptilian will cost upwards of 50 dollars (U.S.). usualy about 60

ANOTHER THOUGHT: If he has a lot of knives and no good place to store them, you could look into knife carriers. MAXPEDITION makes a good 12 pouch carry bag just for folding knives.

YET ANOTHER THOUGHT: If he likes to do woodworking and camping stuff, you might want to consider a fixed blade knife. You will generaly get more knife for the money since they are less complex to manufacture. The KABAR brand "heavy bowie" is nice for the woods. There are many other fixed blade options too.

While I myself am not a huge fan of fixed blades, this might be a good idea because he can make a sheath for it later

I'll second the previous recommendation of a RAT Izula over the Kabar though.

This sort of thing is a good route for me, in case I spend a lot on a knife and get him the wrong thing after all...

As far as storage goes, is there such a thing as a stand or case? I believe he mentioned wanting a way to display his Spyderco Kris.

I must have messed up the link to the first option, but it's called Shooters' Choice. Obviously mostly for guns, but has a better selection than House of Knives... Thanks for the heads up, though! I had no idea about the price difference.

You are right. The RAT Izula would be better. It comes with an amazing warrantee and can be sold or traded at its original value (just about). It would also be more versatile and enjoyable.

As far as a show case, the sky is the limits. I think spyderco may have cases specificaly for their knives but I am not sure you can buy one as a consumer. I would ask a dealer about that, they may even have a spare they could give you a deal on.

Depends on what part of Canada, but it shouldn't really take that long. You can call around and find some good prices and request Fed Ex or UPS shipping.

I am at my wits end trying to find online Canadian knife retailers.

Fenixoutfitters is based in the US, but it wouldn't hurt to call them to see if they can accommodate you.
Fenix: 1800 - 616 - 1326

Other than that, I can only think of ebay canada, but atm, their prices seem rather high for the Manix 2 and Griptillians.

This is your best solution I will vouch for them completely!
