What to buy my boyfriend?

Hey,if you can make it up to the Bass Pro Shop in the von mall. You WILL find something there. They carry all the big brands.
Good luck. ;)

Hey there, I'm new, so please forgive my ignorance about... pretty much everything.

My boyfriend is really in to knives. His birthday is coming up fairly soon, and I'm hoping to get him something knife-related. Of course, I'm the clueless girlfriend, so I've come here for some suggestions!

I'm not especially knife-savvy, but here is what I know of his collection offhand.
-He has a bunch of knife sharpening stuff already so I probably shouldn't get him anything along those lines
-He's mentioned wanting to take up sheath-making, but I really wouldn't know where to start about that!
-His favorite folding knives are Spyerco, and he owns at least one SOG

I'm desperately hoping he doesn't read this - and if he does, at least turns back now, before anything is spoiled. HINT HINT. Anyway, this seems to be the place to be for knife info, so I figured it couldn't hurt to try.

Basically, I'm looking for affordable, not terribly exotic suggestions. My budget is around $50 right now but I'd consider going up to the $100 range. Knife care items and/or sheathmaking things (because I know nothing of them) are what I'm thinking of, but of course if you have any other suggestions, let me know!

Thanks in advance!

You may consider to present him something special - like limited edition etc. There are always something like this on the market.

If he is on sheath making - may be he like to make things himself - so you may check really Mule blade. It is defenetly special and will not be ever made again and as well it is best and rare steel, which no one will use again most likely (too costly to manufacture).

And it only can be bought on Spyderco factory store:

After all it is pretty good knife as well.

Thanks, Vassili.

noz brings up a good point.

You may also check out the Swick. Both the Mule and Swick are limited editions. In fact the Mule is a testbed of sorts for Spyderco to test new steels. The next one will be for sale starting July 10th and will use ZDP 189 steel if I remember right.

The Swick is right up your alley in terms of price. Also, it doesn't come with a sheath, which is nice, since it gives your BF an opportunity to make his own out of kydex or leather.

Found a couple knives that intrigued me - The Spyderco Scorpio and Spyderco Spin. Are these any good from a fan's perspective?

Thanks again.

The Scorpius doesn't seem that popular on these forums from what I could tell. The few reviews that I've seen have been positive though. The Spin has gotten a lot more attention by comparison. The wharnecliffe blade shape of the Spin (notice the edge is straight as opposed the the curved and more common edge as seen on the Scorpius) allows the cutting edge to feel larger than a a curved edge of the same length so it's great for smaller blades. Depending on if his knives are generally larger, the Spin may add some variety to his collection. If you choose between these two, I'd go with the Spin.

I second the Manix 2, you can get it for 70$+shipping from CutleryShoppe. I am sure he will like it.

Hi Kittel:

I am in Cambridge.
Shooters Choice has a smallish selection of Grohmann, Buck and syperdo knives.

The outdoor store on weber in Waterloo gets some good stuff in from time to time - The owner is another Knife nut. Ive seen Griptillians in there, but the pivots are screwed down tight.

If you wanted to go the sheath making route I could provide you with a nice piece of leather, some artificial sinew and a belt clip. All your boyfriend would need is a way to drill the holes.

Im a hobbyist maker and seem to accumulate alot of stuff. :)

let me know.

Kittel,

Are these guys around your area? If so maybe something here would interest you.

Hi Kittel,

As Seanski mentioned is S&R an option?

I was there last week to pick some stuff up and they had a Manix 2 in stock (I think only one left last week). They are a little bit more pricey than Warriors and Wonders but you won't have to worry about shipping if you can drive there and pick one up.

I think they told me 150 Canadian but maybe they can give you a better deal.

Well hello there, almost-neighbour! I'll be sure to check out the Outdoor Store - too bad they're closed for the night, but I'll call them about the Manix 2 tomorrow. Do they even carry Spydercos?

Thanks for your offer, too! I've pretty much settled on getting my boyfriend a knife, but I'll let him know about what you said - he might still be interested :)

I personally wouldnt go with house of knives. Garbage selection and a huge rip off. I have never seen anything for a good deal there. Another thing your bf might like is a multitool--a leathermen or a swisstool. Might be different than the stuff he normally has. All knife lovers should have at least one. Also a fixed blade might be great. Rat cutlery is pretty cheap nice blades.

If he likes Spyderco I would suggest the Manix 2 or even the Stretch 2 Black FRN, both are really excellent knives and cost around $80. I'm sure he will be happy with whatever you choose.

If there's a Wal-Mart nearby, a Kershaw OD-1 would be a nice choice for about $40. Its a framelock "flipper" with a G-10 handle on the non-lock side. The blade is almost 3" and is made of a high quality Sandvik steel.

Another nice knife for about $80 is the Kershaw G-10 Tyrade (as has been mentioned earlier). The handles come in Black, Orange, and Tan. The blade is 3.75" and is made of two steels welded together. Here is a pic of the orange handled one.

Also, the Benchmade Griptilians and Mini-Griptilians are very nice for the money.

+1 on the OD-1 I have one and carry it as an EDC. Also as a bonus Walmart carries it so it could be easier to find/get on time.

I'll also jump on the Manix 2 bandwagon. I don't have one but I think it would make a fantastic gift.
