What to do about this trade? What's ethical?

It's probably stuck in Canadian customs. I have sent several things to Canada by both USPS and UPS and my experience is that it will take at the least a month with either.

LedZep, I'm sorry about the frustration ... sometimes the world just is that way. But, don't panic. One of the nice things about Canada customs is how l o o o o n g they take. Sometimes it's just sitting there, and Will Arrive. :)

It is hard to get to everyone new and tell them How To Do All This Right the first time. But if you look through the stickies on this FEEDBACK: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly! forum, they have all the advice you need on how to buy, sell, trade, wrap, and ship for success. Check it out for next time, and you'll do fine. Please don't give up on our friends outside the US!

I think you did many things right- proactively starting this thread, accepting the Forums suggestions and hopefully keeping the Buyer informed. It speaks highly of you and will stand in your favor for future transactions and life in general. Sadly 1 procedural error might have gone bad.

It’s still early and it’s not beyond hope it’ll still work out.

Good Luck

Hopefully the knife is just stuck in customs and arrives.
If it doesn't, then sadly you're out a knife either way.
Because a trade isn't complete until both parties receive their ends.

So:
1.) Either you'll send his knife back - which sucks because the Sage 2 is an awesome knife.
2.) You can get another Gayle Bradley and send it - This could be scary for you, because then you have the risk of it getting lost as well.
3.) Or the third option is to shoot him the money for a GB through paypal - This may be your best option if he agrees. That way there are no more lost knives and he still gets what he bargained for out of the trade. And customs won't seize the money you send through pay pal.

So I got his Gayle Bradley back in the mail today. The package had been opened, inspector note inside. The knife was unharmed but someone did open it at least once because the bubble wrap it was in was gone. Box had some scuffs. Anyway I'm guessing they saw a Gayle Bradley as illegal in Canada. Not sure why. The only thing the note said was it had been opened and inspected.

So I guess I'm sending it back insured giving him the confirmation number and I'm definitely not claiming it as a knife again. If it doesn't make it this time I can't help it.

Um, that may not exactly be the best course of action...

If Canada Customs identified it as illegal they would NOT send it back to you, they would have seized it and sent a letter to the receiver in Canada stating such.

If it was returned to you I would assume it was undeliverable and returned to sender. Double check the shipping address. If you do resend, be sure to tighten the pivot.

? Quit while you're ahead. Contact the Trading Partner and discuss where to go from here. Next time you might not be so lucky and it might get confiscated.

And you're going to resend it basically lying on the Customs Form?

You eat the next failure to deliver if you do this.

Quit while you're ahead, contact the trading Partner and wrap this up.

If you were in his shoes you would be OK with that?

I think consenting adults should be able to agree to just about anything, so if he is cool with "maybe I get it, maybe I don't" that's one thing, but for you to assume that just shipping the knife ends your responsibility is not cool.
