What to expect in a $1500 knife

There are very, very few makers I would consider dropping that kind of money on a knife for. What defines a "custom" knife is vague at best. There are makers with their own designs, and then there are makers who have platforms to choose from and then you choose the materials etc for the final product. The latter are what I consider a true custom. Its a one of kind knife with your direct input.

This kinda sounds like one of those Instagram clowns who overcharge suckers for junk and when anyone complains the just nope that person out of their feed and carry on getting vouches from the next suckers. I hear there's one born every minute.

I guess I could be proved wrong with the makers name and pics of the knife. Probably won't see that. Any bets?

And before anyone else says it this is really a GBU thread.

I'll never know because my knife purchase price limit (including sales tax & shipping costs, if any) is $500 and, even that's pushing things.

My firearms limit for handguns, rifles and shotguns was $1500 but there's a S&W Model 41 Performance Center model target gun sitting at my LGS calling my name at $1800 plus tax & DROS fees which pushes it to $2k.

Still thinking about that. Don't need it but it's the only Model 41 variation that I still don't own.

What would I expect in a knife costing $1500?

Perfection.

I would need to wake up every morning being absolutely blown away by how perfect the knife is. And no matter how closely I scrutinize the knife, I don't want to find anything I don't like.

I had considered dropping $2k on a Dan Wesson 715 pistol pack .357 but decided that is too much for a six shooter. I ended up buying an IWI Tavor SAR, customized/upgraded, and it was IMO well worth it, and a better use of the money.

That would worry me that they are discounted almost 30% and would make me think they were over-priced to begin with. He does seem to use a wide mix of steels. Which one(s) do you have?
Agreed they are overpriced. I have s45vn. Fat carbon fiber inlays. I only bought it because I like the blade shape and could justify the $ with the inlays. That, and it seemed cheap after the $1500- lol. Other than that, he asks a lot of $ for 2 plates of steel with a pattern design. Honestly, it took me a year to pull the trigger due to these things and I had a weird experience with him trying to order a custom, but it was minor. That's when I came to the conclusion- nice knives, but get them on sale and you are where you should be. I also factored that they seem to be hard to sell.

I read the OP’s thread and to be honest I can’t really answer their question other than I would expect a REALLY nice knife that looks pristine. I just can’t imagine spending that much on a knife!

A $1500 knife will have:
$400 worth of new-age blade-steel and tempering
$300 worth of great scale material and custom sculpting of same,
$400 of extra care in crafting the final product to ensure that it's perfect ,
and
$400 for the maker's name so you don't forget him when you want the next one...

So basically I should ask for $400 off...final product crafting. LOL

I'd be sending it back. If they fail to make it right I'd definitely make a stir. As long as everyone keeps paying higher and higher prices and accepting lower and lower quality, this is only going to get worse.

I know prices have gone up, but at the $1500 mark I'm starting to consider it more of a work of art. A painting with a ripped canvas is certainly unacceptable, a knife with scratches should be as well.

If a $35 Kershaw Link can come out of the package scratch free and undamaged, a $1500 custom should at least be to that level.

I don't care if the maker is charging $200 or $20,000. A good maker will not allow anything out of his shop that can tarnish his name. If you are getting misrepresented poorly finished junk then go ahead and out the guy, because he he is a con artist who clearly shouldn't be selling any knife at any price to anyone.

This is a quality response. LOL Roasted.

Nice talk. Why don't you keep the knife and support the community? Start from there

LOL What? You were the guy who tried to throw shade first. Don't act bungstung because he responded.

Secondly, your second sentence doesn't even make sense. Keep a knife that's obviously not what was agreed on? Supporting the community is a great idea. "Supporting" a maker who sends out beat up knives to customers isn't.
