What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

I have been getting my money's-worth out of my work knives of late.

Also - looking at those maserin Plows... how do those stack up against a case sod jr?

Lovely wood, Gary.
Nice job on the TL-29.
Thanks much, Dave!
On the way home yesterday, we stopped at a Menonite farmer's nursery and the wife picked up a slew of perennials so, she'll be planting flowers all day while I'm watching "Midsomer Murders". I'll have this Case Sod Buster Jr. in my pocket so as to be in solidarity with her while she's performing her gardening tasks. Now don't be judgmental - I cut the grass on our riding lawn mower but that's it as far as the yard and plants go.

No judgement here, Ed. But your wife wants one of your Sodbusters!
Calling with a pair of Jacks

Winning hand.
Thanks Gary, it's the star stump 😀

Nice pair and thanks for the story on the flowers !
Hey- thanks, Steve!
Camillus Jack and a Boker USA Cattle Jr.

And beautiful pair for you, my friend. I always like seeing that Camillus!
Not that it matters or anyone really cares ...

As always, glad to see that 858! Just don’t see that many folks totin one of those.
If I ever start spending $ on knives again I may be looking for one myself.
Great color on that smooth bone.
This just dropped, as some of you know...
A Queenish build with a touch of character...
Fine for a cloudy evening.

A great one to all
Just dropped, huh? I think I missed the email.
Fantastic Russel, Gus.

Plow and SB Jr are quite alike in several aspects. Blade thickness, handle width among them.
Pull is the same on my two, I haven't had to try it, but might be able to adjust the pull on the Plow simple because it has a pivot screw.

The Plow does have a half-stop where the SB Jr does not.
My Plow weighs 2.4 ounces and my SB Jr weighs 2.08. Not enough to make any real difference in the pocket IMO.
I like that the Plow is available in wood or micarta. The SB Jr is also available in material other than delrin, but the handle is much thinner.
The Plow has a lanyard hole while the SB Jr does not.

D2 is a semi-stainless and comes in stonewash on the Plow, so while it will show less fingerprints and resist rust better than CV, it won't patina as nicely as CV.
D2 could arguably be a little harder to sharpen than CV but should hold an edge longer.

Looking at the blade profile, the Plow might be best for tip control and with that bigger belly, the SB Jr might excel as a skinner, but that is getting picky a bit.

I wouldn't give up my SB Jr. and now that I have the Plow, I wouldn't give that up either LOL
While I really like both about equally, I suspect the Plow will get more pocket and use time for some intangible reason I can't really put my finger on.

Bad lighting doesn't play nice with colors, grain detail and such, but here is a size comparison ...

Great picture!
First thing I noticed in your picture the other day was your “baldy” cattle, as we call them.
Thanks. Those baldy cows raise some good calves and make great moms 👍

Threw the Fiddleback Runt in the front pocket when I got home from work...
Awesome little fixed blade, John (nice sheath too). I’ll be interested to hear how you like carrying it. I really like small fixed blades, but I struggle finding a way I like to carry them.

Thanks Dennis, nice photo, great knives and nice time pieces go well together.😎👍
Thank you very much, Todd!👍
Thank you, Dennis. :)
I'll have to send you one of my "new" models once I get some more leather.
You're really hitting the ball out of the park with your leatherwork, John! Can't wait to see your saddle!🙂👍
Thank you very much Dennis, that's a cool pocket-watch to go with your elegant pocket-knife :)
Thank you much, Jack! It's a good watch, but it eats through batteries too fast!
Carrying one of my Lambsfoot SFOs, and a Random Tuesday Speaker Jack :)

A great selection to be paired up, love the popcorn covers on that one Jack!😎👍
Starting off with these two as I enjoy my morning coffee...
A Wright Lambsfoot in Ebony and a Custom Fiddleback Runt.
Awsome, John! Really like the Runt!🤠👍

Sentimental favorites~ Siberian Iris. Brought a sackfull of tubers to this house thirty something years ago from Grandma’s place. She’d had them untold years, through three different locations. Just like the Bearded Iris in my first picture, I have them scattered all over the property. Three different perennial borders/gardens, and naturalized in the edges of the woods, and in the wildflowers. Everywhere I stick them, they seem to thrive and multiply.View attachment 1570318Wild buttercups that inadvertently came along with some Norway Maples I dug out of the ditch at a family place in Wisconsin.

Oh. Were we talking about knives? #23 Oregon Trapper which nails both Trapper Tuesday, and Tidiute Tuesday.
And a Camillus TL-29 I rehandled in cow bone.
Beauty all the way around, Jeff! Cool story behind the family flowers!🙂👍
Starting off today with my Chestnut CV peanut. What better way to start a patina on a peanut than to cut cup cherry tomatoes for a small tortoise. 😄

Can never go wrong with a Peanut in the pocket!😁👍
Among the knives my rotation schedule assigned me this week are this quartet.

You always have such a fine menagerie to show each week, Gary! Each one a winner!😎👍

Real nice, John!😀👌
My choice for the next couple of days, the single blade trapper is a treat to carry, thanks to my friend John 🙂👍:

B BrotherJim ,

I very much appreciate the side-by-side comparison and pictures. The wood looks nice on yours and a lanyard hole is fun to have.

I do like the "pointy-ness" of the maserin too - I am sure it comes in handy.

Oh darn - well I guess I will just have to give the maserin a whirl and see how it does😉.

Thanks again! Great info!

If I had a Plow do-over, I might go for the natural canvas micarta. Heck, I like the Plow so much, I might get it anyway HA

And of course, a similar pattern to the SB Jr is the GEC #71 BULL NOSE.
The Bull Nose has exponentially better fit and finish. No comparison whatsoever there. Exponentially better than the Plow too.
And the BN is much closer to size and blade profile of the SB Jr than the Plow.
Besides 1095 vs CV, the BN is flat ground while the SB Jr is hollow or semi-hollow ground.

Possibly the ONLY thing that keeps the BN from being favored above and beyond the SB Jr and the Plow is the pull of the BN
I can't pinch and open my 2017 Bull Nose. There is a blade swedge about 3/4 the length of the blade.
Just makes it too slippery for my fingers to grab a good hold. I HAVE to use the nail nick on my BN.
Not only the swedge, but the pull is exponentially stronger on the BN.
If the pull on the SB Jr and Plow is a 5, the Bull Nose has a pull of 7.5-8 and a gator snap.

At the end of the day, it might be the more pointy tip or ease to pinch and open, or a combination of many things including intangible, but I like the Plow a lot.

And nope, not giving up my beloved Bull Nose either LOL ... just hope with use, I will one day be able to pinch it open. Then I just might store my SB Jr(s) and Plow.

Thanks for the info! The GEC bullnose knives look really nice, and 1095 is easy to keep sharp - not a fan of a stiff open with nowhere to pinch :/ that is kind of a bummer - half the time I use I sodbuster, I have gloves on. Has it gotten any better (more smooth to open) since you got it?
Don't give up on it yet :)

I have been keeping my eye out for one - I know that they just did another run.. but man did they go too quick! 🙄 ...one of these days it'll work out though (when all this covid stuff blows over and producers can go back to full-time).

I agree - the natural micarta looks really nice. I am also interested to see if the burgundy is more on the red side, or if it is as grey in person as it appears in the pictures🤷‍♂️.

When I showed the wife the maserin, she said, "huh... looks like another knife to me😬", so I guess that is a green light (I mean she didn't say no... right?).

I love hearing your experience - thanks for taking the time to share.

No sir, the Bull Nose is as stiff right now as when I got it in 2017 LOL ... hasn't loosened up one single iota.

I took a hard look at the burgundy micarta, but decided I'd just have to see much better pictures or see it in person to decide.
I have several knives in natural micarta and wanted something a little different but just couldn't pull the trigger on the burgundy based on a computer monitor and faith.
There have been several batches of the Plow and I'm not sure about the consistency of micarta color across the batches,
but I saw a video review of the Plow from 3yrs ago by the man who sells the Plow (a member here), he also questioned the validity of assigning the color burgundy to the Plow
... but he decided to just goes with it because that's what Maserin calls it. Said that somewhere deep in the micarta there might be some burgundy hue.
I probably wouldn't have a problem with it and sure it would grow on me even if I did but just didn't feel a need to take a chance when I also liked the looks of the Bocote and natural micarta.

EDIT: My Bocote disappointed me a bit because it doesn't look ANYWHERE near as nice as the one Bocote Plow pictured on the web site ... but I'm getting used to it. It is what it is I guess.
