What turned you into a knife nut?

oupa...sure....blame everyone else except yourself for your 'carnal' weakness...hey fellows, this guy from 'downunder' has even fineggled(sp) his Christmas presents from his wife early...he probably stooped so low as to promise to take out the trash every day for a week just for a chance to fondle his WM pearl...not a pretty story. ;)

What turned me into a knife nut?

Well I have always carried a pocket knife....just for work purposes.

But, it was early in 2000, I saw an article in American Handgunner magazine, on Emerson Knives Inc.
And there I saw a wonderful photo of an Emerson Commander

And thats when I became a knife knut wanna be....
And in October 2000 when I got my Emerson Commander is when I gained my official Knife Knut status. :D Add now, I am truly just a nut.

I've always really liked knives, as far back as I can remember. What really turned me into a knife nut, was getting my Spyderco Military about 8 months ago. I realized that if you bought quality and did your research, you would have a very useful tool that would last a lifetime. The Military also made me realize what constitutes a good knife, and what you should expect.

I really can't remember. SAKs, lockbacks, midlocks, linerlocks, framelocks, neck knifes, and now Balisongs. Will it never end, I hope not. Knives are just cool, useful tools, and works of art all in one. I LIKE KNIVES. When and how it all started i can't remember. It just seems it's always been this way. there's an old Nordic proverb that goes "a man without a knife is a man without a life." and LIFE is good. later.

Just curious. Not that I'm obsessed.

Actually, I was having lunch and there was a steak knife there, not my fav Ka-Bar or Folder though, just a regular knife...:) It sorta help alittle...

God, I need help...

Like AJ, I think it all started for me when I inherited a Kamp King combo knife from my Grandfather when I was 9. After that came an old Barlow, a small Schrade folder, a Boker folder (the latter two of which I still have); a Kabar FB from my other Grandfather and a Western FB from my dad when I started hunting; a Korean stiletto that my dad carried on guard duty; and a couple of US combo knives while in the military.

I thought I had my hobby under control until I saw a Wegner hunter in the mags a few years back and had to have one. I found one at a big sports show for half price (I think it was a conspiracy to get me hooked). It was followed home the next year by a Benchmade First Production (0341/1000), plain black blade, 940 Osborne. This year I was followed home by a bead blasted, plain blade Microtech LCC. (They're all so cute you just can't turn them away at the door!) Now I'm looking at a Mission MPF.

But, I'm not addicted! I'm not. I can stop any time. I only do it to calm me down.

My Dad.... he used to carry two knives in the car trunk. The first was a genuine military issue survival knife and the other was a hunting/skinning type with a nice wood handle. Too long ago to remember how good of quality though. He also gave me my first knife... a gold plated 2 bladed pocket knife that had my grandfather's initials engraved on it. Somewhere along the line, I have misplaced that knife and I am soooo sad.

my parents were hippies and they used to make leather jackets by hand. My father hand an awesome supply of razor cutting implements. I would sneak in to his workshop and cut leather designs.
I have the gruesome scars(alot) on my hand to prove it.

also my brother and I would sword fight with the straight edge rulers.

then when I was 8 a nieghborhood bully put a knife to my throat and basically mugged me for my lunch money.the knife he hand was a 70's mexican folder with a 4" carbon blade and wood handle, I remember that knife in every detail.

I was hooked ever since!

I think this is something we're born with, at least it was so in my case. It is dorment, and awakened by some external event.
The last two years my collecting has reached the point of shopping frenzy, so it can have its side effects too.

That's where it all started. A 10 X 10 room off the garage where my Grampa had a big gun cabinet, about 5 mounted deer - including a white blue-eyed buck, and hundreds of KNIVES, all displayed on the 4 walls. Hunting knives, combat knives his 3 sons acquired during WWII, bayonets, katanas. When we drove out to Grampa's every sunday after church, I'd grab the skeleton key off the wall and race out to The Den. That was nirvana for me as a young boy. Great memories...

The T.V series KUNG FU. The seen where they are throwing the shurikins got me started on the pointy path.

Kwaiken56,

I wish I have had a grandpa with such a garage (must be paradise), but unfortunately I am the only knife nut in our family.

My grandfather bought me a couple knives when I was young and in scouts, I liked them and they served their purpose, but what really turned me into a "nut" was the Spyderco Delica I bought in '91[have the sales receipt from it too]. I still have it, I still love it, I still use it.

What started it all?...hmmm those little red spread knives in handi-snack cheese and crackers. I was like 2. Then knives just sort came into my life like 6 yrs later.

A Friend from work was into custom knives and he was talking about it one day and I wanted to know what the fuss was and then the next day he brought in a few customs and I was hooked. That was in 98!
I am glad he showed me the way!

I designed an ankle holster that I sell online and thought that knives and a few other things might make a nice addition to the offering. Up until a year ago I owned my Marine Corps Ka-Bar and a Swiss Army Knife that my dad gave me years ago. I jumped in and immediately began spending way too much time on the knife topic. Just found it fascinating and a very, very nice community. I've bought and sold just about everything on the planet in the past year and have identified 7 favorites that I currently own or have on order. I'll probably be at the show in MD this weekend (my wife's working so I'll be the big guy with 2 tots in tow) and I sincerely hope that I don't see anything that I like - spent way too much at the NY Show.

As a child, I was drawn to dangerous things. Knives being on the no-no list as a child, made em more attractive. I buy em now, well cuz I can. Tools are just fun.

I'm not exactly sure where it all started. I've always had a fascination with blades and see them as a tool to be held in upmost respect and care. I think the thing that gave me my final push was being able to handle my friend's Ka-bar. I had never seen a knife so rugged and large before that point and I believe it was that moment in which I fell in love with knives.
