What Type of Knife Knut are you?

To me, there are two kinds of people that are into knives, most notably the higher end productions and upwards.

The first kind is the Boaster I suppose. This is the type of Knife guy that buys a knife for the blade steel and its reputation, the handle material(s), if it has ball bearings or washers, and the name on the blade. Once the knife comes in, it sits in a safe or in its box and only comes out to show off to friends and cut paper. And boasting rights."I got an 0562CF and it has 204P. Teehee. Now let me put it in my Pelican" OR better yet "I got this D.O.C. It has Elmax and is pretty much a Tony Marfione custom.I like it, and it can take a beating." And then it sits in its box, never carried, and only gets flipped when friends come over. (That example is courtesy of my friend. That's literally what he said [emoji55] )

The second type is the User. The one who buys knives based on everything I mentioned above, but also thinks about longevity, blade grind, and purpose of cutting. Their knives don't just sit in the case. They get used and sharpened and cut more than paper. Their knives have character and stories behind them. Then the other group comes along and makes fun of the users because their knife has a wider edge bevel or it shows wear. Can you tell which side I'm partial to? [emoji6] [emoji6]

Of course, there are always in betweens. You could have 4 knives you use but that one knife you don't. You could have 7 knives you don't use but you have 3 good knives you do. And whatever you do may not even be here in this post. So tell me! Let me know! 😆

I think I have very few unused knives. I EDC a rotation of high end/expensive knives including Benckmade Infidel, 62 Bali-Song, 51 Bali-Song, 610 Ruckus, 940 Osborne, 808 Loco,...Then there is fixed blades I beat on like the ScrapYard 1111, Busse TGLB, I pocket EDC a Swamp Rat Rodent Solution, and Just ordered a Swamp Rat Ratmandu and another Busse TGLB...Now in all fairness I have an unused mini Infidel in my safe and the TGLB I just ordered will be a safe queen but I have a user version of both models.

I am a little of both actually. I'm not afraid of using and sharpening my expensive blades. I also don't feel it is a necessity to run every nice knife I obtain through boot camp.

I certainly don't use my knives as often as a lot of people around here, but I carry every knife I own and I definitely take into consideration how it feels in the hand and how well it cuts. So I guess I'm kind of a hybrid. How a knife looks, what its materials are, things that have no value other than collectibility interest me but I still only collect knives that carry well and are legitimately useful tools.

Every knife I have has been used to cut something, but there are one or two that have only ever been used to cut tape and paper.

I think that having only two categories is like having only two knives: impossible. :p

A lot of my knife purchases were because I wanted to try out some particular feature. Some were just too good to pass up. Some were gifts. Some I bought with the express purpose of carrying once, then flipping (which turns out to be very hard to do! Hi, my name's Shorttime, and I hoard knives) so I could get something else.

Although each one got used to cut something so I could see how they did, the reasons for buying them were different.

Pretty much my story as well. Just tryin' things out in a lot of cases with the intent to move the knife along once my curiosity was satisfied. I only have a few unused & uncarried knives. They won't stay with me. They're trade or sale fodder. Once I got them home and held them or pocketed them, something just didn't fit me right so they went back into their boxes to move along at the right time. Everything else I have is used. Some more than others, some in a regular rotation, but they're all carried & used.

I buy for all the reasons listed and then...use, modify, sharpen and use some more. No matter the cost. I buy it,I use it.

Anyways, which are you?

Just wow.

Looks like you have really set up the knife collector as a terrible human. No way in hell am I giving such a one sided question my time to answer it. Good luck kid.

I'm definitely a little of both. Partly this is because I don't have a profession or lifestyle where I NEED my knives or to be using them all the time.

As a general rule, also, if I have a knife that I find I'm not at least carrying occasionally, I sell it.

While I like trying out different knives, I do not keep knives that I find no use for. This is true for both kitchen and outdoor/edc knives. That is the rule that I kinda force upon myself to keep me sane and not to bleed my account completely. I do not want to turn to collector of any kind (no offence to those who do enjoy collecting).

Boasters are pretty much a sign of immaturity. You run into that sort of thing a lot when you're 14 and have friends who "like knives". That said, it might be fun to do a little boasting among friends... camp fire tales ya know.

I hate Boasters. Particularly the ones who say that what they choose to do with their knives is better than what others choose do with their knives.

That's the worst kind of boastful arrogance.

Putting knife collectors into just two categories is very close minded. I have knives that have been on deployments with me and seen hell. I have those I enjoy for the sake of collecting. I also find it ironic how the OP refers to collectors making fun of users but he pokes fun at collectors. Just sayin, to me there's no wrong way to own a knife. Only wrong not to own, lol.

One needs to remember that he is only 14 and probably has limited financial resources available to him. That certainly colors one's views on knives. In time, I suspect he'll have knives that range in quality from "junk" to high end and cost from $10 to $500. You can only use so many.

Wrong thread! Your like me, early onset ;-)

Amen.
The real value of a knife is ultimately determined by its owner. Maybe someone owns a knife because it's a symbol of their individuality and their belief in personal freedom; maybe someone owns a knife because it cuts stuff well; maybe someone owns a knife because they think it looks cool; maybe someone owns a knife because of its historical value, or its sentimental value, or its personal value, or its religious significance. Maybe someone owns different knives for different reasons at the same time...

After watching the movie Patriot I wanted a tomahawk. Yeah, I know, this decision took me a while. ;) But I really didn't intend on fighting with it. Finally ordered the CRKT Woods Chogan T-Hawk with the hammer head. I have little earthly need for this..... that's the blade bug for ya!! It will be a user I think. But likely won't get used much.

Sorry, didn't realize OP's age. Guess I was rather close minded at that age as well. Not that all adults are mature, often myself included. To Op: Most things in life are neither black nor white, but rather a shade of gray that lies somewhere between. You will learn this as you gain life experience.
