when I was a kid I drooled over was the camilus airforce survival knife. I just used to imagine myself as a downed pilot in a remote area with that knife and one of those silly orange vests.
It was the Gerber Mark I. I bought one when I was 16 back in 1978. Still have it somewhere. A close second was the Case Texas Lock Horn. A 2 bladed muskrat styled double lock back with ivory micarta scales.
The first knife I fell in love with was undoubtedly my first real SAK, a Victorinox Champion in black. I bought it for myself years ago just after I got my first post-college job. I still have it, although I carry a SwissChamp XLT now.
If you limit this to pure knife knives my first love would be a very recent model: the Kershaw Boa. That was the first knife I ever held where everything came together for me: the feel of the handle, the shape of the blade, the durability of the edge. I even love the bright mulit-colored anodizing, although I wasn't sure I would until I saw it "in person".
I had many "infatuations" as a boy, but the first "true knife love" of my adulthood was a Buck 112. I used that knife for everything, beat the crap out of it, carried it everywhere. Then, alas, I lost it. I bought another one several years later, but it just wasn't the same.
The Benchmade CQC7. I really liked that knife. I had about 4 or 5 of them at one point but I either traded them off or sold them. Except for the last one I had and I lost it in the woods riding ATV's. I have really bad luck with losing things, I lost my wallet about 3 times in the last 4 years and I just lost a Benchmade 705 about 3 weeks ago.
The first knife I fell in love with was the "US Pilot Survival Knife" in my local Army & Navy stores. This looked like a CHEAP copy of the Sog Bowie 1, complete with leather sheath and sharpening stone.
My first love in customs was the Emerson CQC6 - I made the mistake of selling mine earlier in the year, but I am glad to say that I have fixed that problem. A nice simple, well designed knife. You have to use it to appreciate it.
I have carried a knife in my pocket for as long as I can remember - and that is a fair while, believe me. My knife was like putting on my wristwatch - I felt naked without it. But to me it was a functional tool and I did not think any more about it.
That is until I saw the Leatherman Wave. I just had to have one. A toolbox in my pocket - what a thought! I have mine, but it lives in my truck as it is too heavy for my front pocket and I do not like a belt pouch.
I think someone else said it before, but the first knife I fell in love with was a Spyderco Police model, all stainless in Spyderedge. That knife went everywhere with me, and got the crap beat out of it. Then I gave it away. AARRGH. I'm still trying to get that one back.
I guess the first one I really lusted after was my grandad's two-blade Robeson slipjoint. Man, I could never wait for him to rock back a bit, slip his hand down into the right pocket of his tan Dickies work pants, and bring out that knife. I learned then that a "man" doesn't walk around like a nitwit asking if anyone has scissors, sawing at things with a car key or chewing on things with his teeth. I really miss him.
If I remember right, back in the early eighties it was a Buck Buckmaster or a Lyle Survival. I ended up with a Buckmaster, and hated it. Then I believe it was my Western Bowie that I saved up and bought about that time.
