what was your first knife and your memories of getting it ?

I think I had occasional use of a folding knife before joining Scouts at age 11, but I have no clear memory of what it might hve been. In any case, once in Scouts in the late 1950s, I quickly got outfitted with an official BSA Imperial 4-blade job.

Now the original Imperial was lost by me, and the Handbook also went adrift during some move sometime. But thanks to the Famous Auction Site, both lacks have been remedied, as seen above. No, it's not as "real" as if they were the actual ones I had — but close enough.

I managed to convince my mother that the Cub Scout knife was a required part of the uniform. Yes, I did manage to slice my thumb "testing" the blade that same day, but I put a bandaid on it and kept it hidden from her. On meeting days we wore our uniforms to school, including the knife hanging from the belt clip. There were no classroom stabbings or playground knife fights, but I do recall teachers borrowing knives from the scouts, for some task or another, on numerous occasions. Imagine that today!

At my school teachers are all weird. Some dont care if you carry knives and others would flip ou on you. (I dont carry in school for that very reason, but I know of people that do) Its very frusturating too because I live in a very rual area where you would think knives would be valued more... Oh well.

Anyways, my first knife I got 3 years ago. It was a gerber bear grylls sheath knife. Back then that was a good knife for me, and it never left me down. Now though I'm pretty happy with my 950-1401 which is a VERY GOOD knife for me!!! :D :D :D

My first knife was a Smith & Wesson something-or-other, bought NY my Grandparents for me at a flea market. I never used it much, just sharpening sticks to nothing to show it off around bonfires. About 2 years ago, I started actually using it until I got my first real knife, a Kershaw Knockout, bought by my girlfriend at the time for an Easter present. I then gave her my Smith & Wesson because she wanted a knife just to have it. I think its still at her house.

I love this thread!

I got this knife from my grandpa after I lost the knife from my other grandpa on a walk in the woods back when I was about 10 years old I think.
Before that I remember getting a sak from my dad when I was about 6 years old but have no clue were it went or when it disappeared out of my life.

My first fixed blade I bought from my birthday money, together with my dad in a local knife shop at age of 10 I think. The store is gone for many years now.
This knife has become alot more precious to me as my dad died unexpectedly of cancer 2.5 years ago.
Stil have the knife, need to take a pic sometime. Its an USMC knife lookalike.... stacked leather handle, black blade and leather sheath.
Nothing but good memories of building shelters in the woods with my friend are attached to the knife.

Is it sad that I honestly can't remember?

I'm pretty sure that I had some sort of generic pocket folder but who knows what it really was or what happened to it.

The first knife that I definitely do remember was a hunting knife my Dad gave me: Ka-Bar 1233 Skinner. That thing was badass and I loved it.

I think my Dad might have taken it away from me for being less-than-obedient but I don't know.
Thinking about it just now made me send him a text to see if he knows where it is...

It would be cool to get that knife back.

Mine was a fixed blade and hawk combo....I was instantly hooked....all thanks to my great gramma!

My first knife was a BSA brand Swiss Army style knife I won in a Boy Scout popcorn-selling contest.

First knife I bought was a Gerber "Folding Sheath Knife" I got in my early 'tweens. It served me pretty well, but now that I have some higher-quality folders and have discovered the joy of fixed-blades, the Gerber sits on my kitchen counter behind the paper towels, covered in rust and in total disrepair.

My first real Victorinox SAK was bought in Switzerland by my Swiss neighbors as a thank you, as they know of my interest in knives.
Always sad when I hear of an old knife being left to rot. There is something uplifting about bringing an old knife back from the dead, and it really doesn't take much. Give it a go, your first will always be your first. Give it some love!

When I was 13 (almost 30 now) my oldest brother gave me a ss spyderco harpy pe. He was about to move out of the house and cleaning out his room and handed it told me. He said just don't tell the folks. Still have it.

I remember using Mora's.. The red wooden handled ones. Probably helped myself to them. Remember going into the woods and making bows and arrows, spears, swords, guns sling shots.

Don't remember my age, but it was a small silver swiss army 2 blade key chain knife my dad gave me. I would guess I was around 10. Shortly after I found a rusty old "Rambo" knife with a broken tip along the railroad tracks. Cleaned the latter up with some naval jelly and would hack through anything I could find while with friends at our "hideout". Stayed hidden in our fort until eventually it went missing. The swiss army I remember I got to the phase of demolishing my hot wheels, and I cut my thumb real good stabbing a windshield out one day on my back porch. My mom took the knife and I was never a fan of non locking blades again until recently.

Oh, wow; this brings back memories! I remember being 10 and going to my first camporee. I didn't have hardly anything to take with me, and when I got there, I realized everyone had knives and ponchos, and I had none of that. Somehow, my Mom showed up and handed me a yellow rubber rain jacket and a Schrade LB-7 that they had bought for me at K-Mart. They didn't have much money, but they went out and bought me the best they could find at the time. I remember not liking it because it didn't look like all the Swiss Army Knives the other Scouts used, and how my leaders would wince every time I brought it out because it was easily the biggest knife out of all the kids, but they let me use it and I never lost a corner off my Totin' Chip card. In fact, some leaders would ask for my knife when they needed something strong to cut something.

I just took it in the other day to get professionally sharpened, and it's in great condition though I don't use it anymore. It's got sentimental value and it's in my safe, even after years of being in a tackle box until I realized I should clean it up and save it. I told the knife shop owner the story about being embarrassed for having such an 'uncool knife' and how I was the only kid who had his dad's Army issue sleeping bag and alice pack, and being embarrassed by those things, too. Now? Now I know I had the best gear, and I owe it to my Dad for always making sure I went out into the world with the best he could find. Thanks, Dad, for everything.

I was about six. Grandparents gave brother and i huge foil covered chocolate eggs for easter taped to his egg was a jack knife with blue marble like scales taped to mine was a smaller pen knife with same design. I dropped it down the sewer grate by accident

When I was seven I got a Donald Duck watch for Christmas. It came as part of a set that consisted of the watch, a ball point pen, a penlight flashlight, and a knife. The watchband, pen, flashlight, and knife were all the same color as Donald's shirt. These are the only pieces that I have left. At first I could only use the knife when my Dad was present, but after a couple years I was carrying it everyday. Been carrying one everyday ever since, about 56 years, except while I was in Boot Camp. You can see by the blade tip that it has been used as a screwdriver more than once. No maker's name on the knife, but to a seven year-old it was great.

Makes me feel so sentimental, these ones do. My first technically was a SAK classic from Santa, but my first real knife was a schrade 340t. The story behind it is that my grandpa got tired of me using that little SAK, so he said go grab a knife from his collection. I went and grabbed the schrade, not because it was the best, which the clip blade had a broken tip, and there was a bad wobble due to it being Swinden key. No it just looked cool to me, it was after I showed my grandpa my new treasure that he explained that it was his fathers, and he passed it down to him along with a schrade uncle Henry that I once had the honor of sharpening. That was one of the coolest moments I had ever had, and I used that knife for a good six months until my other great grandpa gavel an old colonial scout knife.

Mine was a stockman type folder labeled with nothing but Ranger. It was my dad's every day knife for years. One day on a walk in the mountains my little brother found a big fixed blade Craftsman knife. Dad hadn't planned on either of us owning a knife yet but little brother found it so it was his. He could tell that I was bummed about my kid brother owning a knife before me so he pulled his out of his pocket, looked at it for a good while, handed it to me and told my brother that he would hold onto his knife for him but he could have it when he was my age. That made my day.

My first was a Boker Tree brand pocket knife very similar to this one:

I still have it somewhere, I'll try and get a pic up.

Had a bunch of cheapo knives and SAKs when I was younger. My first real EDC was a Spyderco Endura at age 14, I loved and carried that knife for 10 years. I was really impressed with the weight to blade ratio and spyderedge. I started searching online for a replacement, wanted to keep it for sentimental value. I had so many memories attached to it. Then I found Spyderco forums and BF and that was that, have since upgraded to CRK, Striders and RH :)

Another Scouts knife here from Grandfather...Ulster..with the shield and delrin handles, bail...carbon blades that I couldn't resist sandpapering over the years. Still hanging on the shop pegboard and still sharp as hek.
