Heh, I had a Maxam for a long time - probably still around somewhere if I looked hard enough. It was cheap, sure, but I actually though it was a rather nice knife, especially for the price.
Mine was a liner lock with a slender clip point blade, open pillar construction, contoured rosewood scales, and steel bolsters. The liner was a bit thin for my comfort, but the lockup was still unfaltering solid. No gaps at all between the scales & liners, nor the scales & bolsters. Blade was reasonably sharp and held an edge reasonably well.
All in all, for the $15 or $20 i payed for it I think it was a real winner. A knife that looked great and performed as well as anyone could expect. A knife that 99% of people who carry a pocket knife would be glad to own.
As to my FIRST knife ever?
If I recall correctly, it was a small Imperial two blade stockman. It had a larger clip blade, and one small pen blade. Liners were made of brass, and the scales were of black Derlin. Dunno' what ever happened to it. I used it for a few years and likely lost it, as kids are wont to do.
