What was your first knife?

I found the first knife I ever had. A bright orange Frost Cutlery "Flying Falcon". I found this knife under a bridge at Montauk State Park some twenty years ago. I was trout fishing with my grandad and remember it well because it was the first time he let me go off by myself. When I did, I found my first knife.

"Walk and talk" doesn't even begin to describe this beauty.

Victorinox Camper. First locking folder was a Gerber LST. That was in the 80s.

First knife I spent my earned monies on was a Buck 112 Ranger w/ finger grooves. Around $30 bucks..a lot of loot for me in the early 80's.

HUH... my first knife I swiped from a first aid kit in my parents bathroom. It was one of those no frills all metal folding knives with a 1 1/2" blade. I promptly hid in my tree fort and ran it diagonally across the whole length of my palm, testing to see if it was sharp. Nice clean slice.... I blamed my injury on something else and kept that knife hidden in my fort for a long time. A couple years later my grandma started buying me knives on our trips to the flea market and taught me knife safety too.

This is a similar knife-

My first knife was a SAK from my uncle when I was a kid. Knife that flipped the knife-crazy switch to "on" was a Buck 110.

My first was a very dull Barlow with wood scales that my Dad gave me. Last year, when cleaning out my Mom's house before auction, one of my brothers found it in a box in the attic. It had my initials crudely carved in the scales. I gave it to my son.

I was given a SAK by my uncle when I was like 10, I want to say. It definitely sparked something inside me to realize the importance of a cutting tool. Much later I got a Spyderco Endura 4 in a saber grind. That was my first serious knife. It was what I first considered an EDC knife. I had had some other folders before, though. Mostly cheap Gerbers and some random Kershaws, but the Endura was the first to make me take notice of quality and utilitarian use of a pocket knife. I've since moved on to a full flat grind Endura but I just have to have at least one Endura in the collection.

I got my first knife when I was 6 years old. It was a small, key ring pearl automatic knife. It had a little green nob on the end that you pulled and the blade would fly open. I eventually lost it playing, somewhere, so my father bought me a Barlow. I have been in love with Barlows since.

Just a question for clarification and I'll stay more on topic. What's the difference between a hobbyist, enthusiast and obsession?

Now for the short answer for those who don't want to read my TL;DR version it was the Buck Titanium 186 that started the next short phase as hobbyist. :)

My dad gave me my first folder - a Buck 305 - when I was about 8 (circa 1977-8). It's the middle one pictured. I bought the other two myself eventually (yes, even as a kid I had to have 2 or 3!). I sold all three to a collector here on the Forum several years ago.

My first fixed blade was also from my dad and was also a Buck - a Buck 102. I was about 10 years old and took it on my first deer hunt. This one I still have and will never let go:

Mine was a medium sized Case. Don't remember the model but I made the mistake of taking with me when I was inducted into the army in 1969. It was confiscated at the reception center at Ft. Benning. I wish I still had that knife.

Technically my very first knife was a sak classic that I found on the ground at a great america park when I was 3 ( my mom put it away until I was old enough, and still needs to find it for me )
But the first one that counts as " my knife " was an all stainless dollar store multi function knife that my dad bought me.
From the moment I found that classic I was in love with knives ( I was always drawing knives and swords )

Since the classic doesn't really count my first good knife was my Shcrade old timer 33OT that I still use to whittle.

I think I have to thank cutlerylover for teaching me that there's a such think as a crap knife, and the first knife I had that I actually knew was a good quality knife was my buck 425 that I still use to this day.

I was in the second grade. maybe 1973 or 74

My first knife was a Cub Scout knife. No clue where it is or who made the thing. My guess would be Camillus for the manufacturer. The first knife I bought was a small folder from Boker. Still have that around here somewhere.

The knife that got me started on the path of this knife craziness would be that Boker or maybe a Buck 112 Ranger I picked up in the early 70'ish. The Buck was stolen out of my car about 1980. I hope the asshat that got it cut his hand open big time. F***ing thief.
