My first knife was a cheap "Rambo Survival Knife" I paid $5 for it in 1982 or 1983 at a flea market. It had the compass on the handle and a hollow space in the handle for all your survival needs. The blade was some crappy steel it was very hard to sharpen and it wouldn't hold an edge. At 11 or 12 yrs old I didn't know what I was doing with the cheap stone it came with. Just as I have no clue now. The sheath was fake leather.

I moved from Massachusetts to Florida and my first real knife came at Christmas 2006. I convinced my wife to buy me a Benchmade Auto Stryker. Actually, I bought it and brought it home and said thanks for my gift. A gun store near me was closing and it was clearanced for $80. Well, it's been downhill since then and my collection has grown exponentially.

What was your first "real" knife?

mine was a scout knife. but instead of having the cheap plastic handle, it was wood and laser engraved with the words "choose the right." i've still got it, i just dont use it. probably never will

When I was little, my first knife was a schrade imperial barlow. I got if from Grandpa. I lost it the same day. When I got older, I had lots of different "rambo knives". I had a few butterfly knives. Finally, when I was like 22, I got a Spyderco endura full serrations. Then, I upgraded to the origional Benchmade AFCK. Downhill every since. I have owned almost every production knife out there, except the new stuff. I am working on those!

Great story about getting the knife from your Grandpa. It's too bad you lost it. Did you ever think of getting another of those knives as a keepsake/memento?

Great story. I wish I had a knife with that type of history. I hope to do that for my kids.

Thankfully, my first knife was a SAK Classic given to me by my uncle when I was 9 or 10. I carried it everywhere. Too bad it's gone now. Being the genius I was at that age, I had just seen "Speed" and I wanted to defuse the bomb that was my desk lamp. I stripped the power cord (while it was still plugged in of course) and as soon as the blade hit the copper. . .BANG - half the blade was melted away.

Poor SAK Classic :(

I have 30 knives now to make up for that first one though

Great story. Too bad about the knife. But, you'll always have the memories.

I can't wait to give a SAK to each of my kids.

It wasn't my first knife, but I had a hollow handled POS rambo knife as well. I was running around with it one day when I tripped and fell, driving the tip into my thigh. Fortunately for me it had gone in less than half a centimeter and when I checked the tip had bent, blunting it. The disappointment I felt at the realization that Rambo wouldn't be caught dead with that junk knife was tempered by my joy at not needing a trip to the hospital.

My first knife was probably a SAK of some sort. Not as expensive as the knives I buy now, but no less of a real knife for it.

When I was twelve, I saved up the astronomical sum of $20 bucks or so and bought a SAK Huntsman. It was my only edc for many years. Now, 24 years later, it is pretty beat up but still fully functional. I'll give it to my daughter when she's old enough.

Fortunately, I never realized it was a POS until long after it was stolen. I thought it was the best knife in the world.

That could have happened to any of us. I remember my (fake leather) sheath was so cheap that the knife actually cut a hole in the front of the sheath.

An Old Timer 34OT given to me by my grandfather when I was about 8 years old. I lost that knife when I was about 10 but immediately bought another just like it, which I still own today.

Bob,

Thanks for the story. I'm glad you replaced your lost knife. I'm sure when you look at it or hold it, you think of your grandfather.

Keep em coming.

I had a SAK as a kid, the baker at my work has spydercos, and I thought they were cool so I got a dragonfly last year, look at me now.

my dad gave me a Victorinox camo Spartan. Even though now I edc a compact knife SAK, I still kept the camo Spartan so I can give to my kid one day.
