What was your first knife?

I had a few cheapos that I no longer can find...so I will say my first was an Old Timer that my granddad gave me probably 7-8 years ago. Its beat to hell, and was a spur of the moment thing. I liked knives, he took it out of his pocket and gave it to me. I will always have that knife.

Last year he gave me my first fixed blade that he handmade only to store in his gun cabinet for the next 5 years. Those are probably my two most cherished just because they were gifts to me.

After that, I ran across this site....and the addiction began.

I got a Victorinox Huntsman from my dad when I was 10.. I suppose that's how it started

SAK scout knife. its been through heck and back, but is still a great lil knife. i would hate to loose it

My first "real" knife was a little Western boot knife, similar to the one in this eBay auction. I can't believe how much money this one in the auction is fetching, though...

I have had a series of Victorinox pocket knives since aged ten. They were really good value. Taught a kid what not to do with a knife.

Thinking on it my first belt knife was a 1994 custom 440c Corne Smit Hunter. Wife bought it for me at a gun fair. It is getting long in the tooth and seen the insides of many a buck. Still razor sharp and effective. My next was a Glock 81 for general use, did very well, that departed with a friend.

That Ranbo knife has been the cause of many a collection by teaching people the real meaning of Cheap & Nasty.

My first was a little Vic SAK, I think it was a Hiker.

Now I carry a Vic SwissTool on my belt. Still love the Vic.

First knife was a three bladed old timer. A clip point blade, sheep's foot blade and one with a kinda rounded blade.

Got stolen out of my coat by some one when I was 9 or 10. I remember when I got that pocket knife from my dad, I felt like such a grown up, then cut my self immediately (as soon as I was out of eye sight of my parents).

If anyone has ever read Patric McManus story about the first knife it was exactly like that. (if you have never read his short stories in paper back about growing up/ outdoors do you self a favor and read them all, you will cry your eyes out....especially the part about why an 8 year old is perfectly competent to own his first knife, while even one day short of the 8th anniversary would be nothing less than a felony were a knife to be given to such an infant).

A camillus barlow with saw cut delrin handles used enough to be dull. The early 70's or more like the late 60's. It never crossed my mind that it was or ever would be a weapon in peoples eyes someday. I got it taken away going into basic training. Into the "amnesty" box it went as the drill sgts told us we would go to leavenworth if caught with such things.

I did later in life inherit my grandfathers yellow plastic gripped Jack knife made made by "Ideal". Both carbon steel of course. I still have my grandfathers knife.

I also have my first switchblade. I bought it in germany and carried it off duty there, gave it away when I got home, years later I tracked it down to the family menber I gave it to. It took a better switchblade , plus a mini handmade switchblade to get it back. It's an Othello. I don't know why that knife means so much to me. We went through a lot together I suppose. Joe

Mine was what I now know to be a Mora but hadn't heard of in those days. They were common knives in rural Australia in the early 60s. I got mine from the local corner store that sold fishing gear as well as groceries etc. As many of you will remember it was no big deal for a young kid to buy a knife over the counter in those days and no-one even noticed if you wore it around openly. It was known as a Toledo, although also marked as Frosts and Made in Sweden. The Toledo brand is still around and mostly associated with cheap tools.

I don't know what happened to the knife - I had it long into adulthood and it must have gone missing in one of many moves around the country. Maybe its still in the bottom of a box somewhere, who knows. Anyway I found an identical well used one on ebay around a year ago and bought it - it is pictured below

My first knife was a Air SOG from the BX at Misawa, and lost it at some point in time while there. Though I replaced it with a Lakota Phoenix. Now that blade made me happy, though that was later lost/stolen.

If I remember correctly, my dad got me a SAK classic when I was 10. I have no idea what happened to it. I have memories of using it, but none of losing it. Oh well, I'll live, just wish I had those memories back.

Great story about getting the knife from your Grandpa. It's too bad you lost it. Did you ever think of getting another of those knives as a keepsake/memento?

Yes I did. I bought one just like it. After he died, I also got his Buck 110 (60's model) Buck stockman, Kabar stockman, and his Pal Rh36 combat knife. These knives I will never sell. I wish I could have known him better, I am pretty sure he was a knifeknut, or could have been!

My first knife was a very small Imperial folding knife. It was a tad small even at age 6, and I later got a white handled Imperial trapper design knife that was a little larger. I carried it to school most days. Carved my initials in many a beech tree as a kid which I can still find periodically. Next knife was an Imperial Barlow which was larger, but still very cost effective. I then moved to Case XX folders and have been using those and others ever since. I can't remember not having a knife. I now spread the joy and the heritage, but caution against taking it to school.

My first was an Imperial Kamp King, purchased from paper route money at age 12. It was my EDC for 15 years, until on an impulse I gave it to a girl friend who promptly lost it. Last year or so, a friend gave me one of the same, which now resides with too many knives and multi-tools that somehow I have managed over time to accumulate. It is in very good condtion and occasionally I use it.

My first knife was an Okapi folder, given to me by my father. This was one of the German made ones. It was a tool, used till half the blade was sharpened away (and the tip broken many times from use as a prybar), and replaced with another. This process has been repeated many times: my collection of good knives is now quite substantial, but I still have Okapi's all over the place for rough jobs and for lending out...

My first knife was a Scout knife. I don't remember who made it but it was the quality of a Case knife. This was about 1979 and I gave it to a Promising scout while I was working as a counselor at camp Tapico (I think that is how you spell it). He was as happy to have it as I was, and carved me a bolo tie shaped like an arrow with it. I met him a few years later when he was an order of the arrow member and he still carried it.

First knife was a cub scout knife my grandpa had. Second knife was a SAK that I shoplifted from Sears when I was like 12 (stupid kids and their ideas that stealing is cool >_<).

I *wish* I could find my grandpa's knife, but it was lost to a summer I don't remember, though I remember the blade perfectly. Still have the SAK, I still carry it with me just about everywhere I go, heh.

My first pocket knife that I actually bought was a Benchmade 943 satin plain edge. Tip snapped when I was trying to pry open something I don't remember when I was drunk, threw it out the window I was so annoyed. Was even more annoyed the next day when I couldn't find it to maybe buy a replacement blade.

Man, looking back, I was a really stupid kid/teenager. I couldn't imagine stealing, losing, or using a knife as a prybar these days :D

A Colonial SAK-type knife, my father gave me around 1973. Still have it and the rustic leather sheath I made for it.

When I was like 5 an aunt of mine went to Switzerland (she's an artist, so I guess she went to take pictures), and brought my brothers and I back tiny little Victorinox multi-tools... I lost mine pretty quickly.

After that I had a little fake Buck type knife, and a couple of Gerbers... What I consider to be my first real knife is my Kershaw Leek which I got in August of last year, since then I've gotten a Spyderco Spin, and my next knife looks to be a Spyderco Persian or a Benchmade Mini-Skirmish (if the Persian fits my hand well I'll get it first ;) ). I'm only 15 by the way.

My first knife was a jigged bone traditional folder with a large and small blade that my dad gave me but unfortunately it got lost over the years. My first decent quality knife after a long line of cheap blades that followed the traditional folder was a Gerber Gator framelock that my brother gave me (he got sick of seeing the crap blades I was buying and breaking or losing). It held up well as an EDC for years.
