What was your first true custom knife?

Para, I seemed to have opened a car of worms here.so let me enumerate somethings.

1. I had and still have no clue as to the KMG definition of Custom made knife.

2. The topic was a 1 sentence post, it was aimed at the people who had actually worked with a custom maker to get the exact knife they wanted. NOT all custom owners, just the ones who had their knives specially designed by a maker for them.

3. In part it was so I could get to see some knives that I had not previously seen. I had hoped to see more posted, but as you have turned it into a hate viper(whose name is Paul if you looked at my sig) and are purposely using my nick as a goad as per a previous post in this thread, very few knives have been posted.

4. Having read more than 1 other post from you in many other threads, many in fact where you seem to take pleasure in disrupting the thread or causing strife, then suddenly becoming the victim when you are properly rebuked before your behaviour, I am not particularly worried about your opinions. Everyone has one and they are like a**holes, for the most part they stink.

5. I say this with true perplexity, as you said about me telling you to get bent. Do you really think it's wise to cause so much grief, being a forum moderator? Last night I was counselled to complain to Mike, and see what happened from there, but I said no, Para has not yet reached that point with me, though last night it was a very close call.

6. And this is for you alone Para, if you can't add something positive to this thread, please don't add anything at all. This thread was not to debate over who's definition of Custom Made is correct, it is about discussing the first knife you had made for you, be it a Carson F4, a Ralph EDC, and the myriad of others that are out there! I feel that most participants of this thread will agree with me. You have made no friends or allies, in this thread at least.

7. This is to the rest of you posters on this thread, let's get back to the real purpose of this thread, posting your hidden gems you have had made, but not shown to many people, or maybe you have, don't make any difference to me, when Photopoint comes back up I want to see a flood of awesome custom mades posted to this thread.

BTW Para how's the weather in Maryland ;-)

Ok, lets see if we can steer this thread back to where it belongs. I of course mentioned my DeLeon bowie. I have also had other handmades. Although not my first custom, one that may fit better within Pauls question might be one of my knives from OGG custom knives (aka MaxTheKnife, aka Max Burnett) As a fan of the wharncliffe blade, and owner of a couple of little wharncliffe neckers, I got an urge for a big wharncliffe. I discussed this with Max as I had just gotten another couple of knives from him and was extremely pleased with the quality and the fairness in which he deals with his clients.

I had a small (very small) hand in the design. My tiny contribution was 'big wharncliffe and hollow ground'. The rest was left up to Max. This is the first time that I am aware of that Max made wharncliffe of this size. The entire knife has a slight curve from butt to tip. The blade is a fine line between being a wharncliffe and a sheepsfoot blade.

The design makes for a nice combination of light wieght fighter and heavy duty user. The way this was accomplished was pretty neat. Instead of the distal tapered needle thin point you might expect, the spine kept most of its thickness all the way to the end. In order to get the penetrating ability also needed, the last 1/4" to 1/3" of the edge is 'upswept'. Now, this would not penetrate like a dagger, but it serves its purpose very nicely while maitaining strength needed for a worker. So, I suppose this qualifies as a knife made specifically for me to my basic specs, with the actual execution left up to a knowledgable maker who can take a basic idea and with skill turn it into what you want.

As long as I am putting you all to sleep with my long winded post, let me add a few extra and interesting things regarding this knife.

Max is a neo-tribal maker. He has all the typical power tools and knows how to use them. But, as I understand neo-tribal, the idea is to do as much as possible without power. In following this method my wharncliffe (he calls it the "Aardvark") forged by hand. The main hollow grind was even done at the forge. He has this old cannon ball (I think its a cannon ball) welded to a shaft. He uses this up and down the blade to achieve the hollow grind. Also, the tapered tang was forged. Im not sure how much the 'power tools' came into play in its creation, but I know it wasnt much at all. To me, this knife is a real work of art, especially when you realize how much was done strictly 'hands on' with fire and hammer. Also really special is that it was made "for me".

For those who have never seen my "Aardvark Fighter" I would show you here, but since photopoint is down at this time....I cant

Okie dokie, Im sure many of you are falling asleep, so I will stop now.

Having worked with max in the past, I have found him to be honest and more than fiar with his prices. I also know he is more than swamped with orders!

Look forward to seeing the Wharnie(my favorite also) as soon as Photopoint is back up! And all you others, if you have other means besides Photopoint don't be shy about posting!!!

Ya want pics, huh? I'm sure folks are just about sick of seeing these, but...

Here's one that I actually had a hand in making myself. Here's some info that I posted a while back:

I had the pleasure of flying up to Darrel's shop in Ohio to spend a long weekend (along with Dexter Ewing, and Kevin Pensinger from The Edge Equipment) helping to create this double-action leaf-spring EDC. This has a 3.5" 420V blade with a hand-rubbed finish (that took a whole freakin' day to apply!) I did all of the anodizing and heat coloring of the clip and screws, texturing of the screw heads and handles, the "nugget" work in the design grooves, and the hand-rubbed finish. I jeweled the inside of the titanium handles. I drilled holes. I screwed up. I fixed my screw-ups - with Darrel's help, of course. I put the knife together. I took the knife apart. I put the knife together. I took the knife apart. I put the knife together... Well, you get the idea. All-in-all it was a fantastic trip. It was great meeting Kevin finally. Darrel and his family were great hosts. It was fun to have a hand in making a knife like this as well. Hope y'all like it.

Let me add that I never would have been able to do the above without developing a relationship with Darrel over the internet, through e-mail, and in person at the Blade Show and the Southeastern Custom Knife Show. Yet another reason to get to know the makers personally. Even if you purchase knives from the purveyors instead of directly from the maker, you can still get to know the maker if you want to. Hop on over to the BFC chat room nightly and talk to a bunch of makers, go to the shows to see 'em in person, e-mail them....

Yes Kelly is right BFC chat usually has Kit Carson, Tim Herman, Richard T, Mike Cooper, Kelly, Tom Wilkinson, myself, bunches of folks! Lots of fun! Come enjoy!

Very nice Kelly, but you're not off the hook! Never get tired of a well made knife. Besides without Photopoint, most of us are having photos interruptis, not pleasant at all! You are our only hope Kelly, only you can save us from mass suicide, so decide! More pix or lotsa dead knife knuts! But don't think I'm putting any pressure on you

I actually ordered 2 custom (to my specs) knives on the same day. Just as the Talonite word was starting to spread I ordered the following:

* TTTKK from Trace Rinaldi with longer blade, colored micarta slabs & mosaic pins
* Talonite Cetan from Rob Simonich with titanium slabs

Two awesome knives from two great guys! It was a super start to my now growing collection of custom knives.

I guess this is the only unique custom I have it's one of three made by Pat Crawford. I saw it at the Spirit of Steel show last year. He told me it was designed by a friend of has that is a coroner. The other two knives like it belong to Mr. Crawford and the coroner.

Wow that certainly is a unique knife! Nice very nice. Almost can tell it is designed by a coroner! Looks like it could open ya up real quick like!
Thanks for sharing the pic! I love seeing the one of a kind/near one of a kind knives. Sure won't get to see it from Pat or the coroner!

Viperdude:what if your specs are the same as the makers. In other words you find a knife in the secondary market and it is EXACTLY how you would order directly from the maker.Would it be a custom?
