What Was Your Most Disappointing Knife Purchase?

The only knife that would fit this desription for me thus far would be the Kershaw small liner. Had a nice NIB edge but once that was gone, it seemed it was gone for good. Pivot screw would come loose after about 3 openings too. It was cheap and Kershaw puts out quality knives but that one did not impress me.

I'll have to agree with BOK...The Kershaw small liner had a great edge when i bought it. As a matter of fact, i still have the scar from the tip of my thumb that it cut off while i was looking at the knife in the store. But after the first few days, it was nothing more than a glorified letter opener. It wouldn't hold any kind of edge.

I've been dissapointed in just about every non slip joint Schrade that I've ever owned. The clip hanger and beast just suck. The liners are paper thin and the lock up was next to pathetic. I was also dissapointed in my first Camillus EDC. However, Camillus stands behind their products and my EDC was better than ever.

JoeShmoe, why would you judge a quality product like spyderco by some piece of **** ripoff!!

Gotta include the Boker TopLocks. Lousy ergonomics, lousy blade lock-ups, inefficient lock button, excessive blade play...

Spyderco Walker lightweight. Took it out of the box, wobbled the blade, put it back in the box and returned it.

I bought a Halo III clone that claimed to be 154cm...yeah right...when i got it i couldn't get over how horrible the fit and finish was, but i told myself "at least it works"...that didn't last long...a day later when i was opening and closing it while watching a movie, the spring shot right out the back! i was amazed, this POS didn't last two days! please dont waste your money on this piece of crap...

Well Jeff, let me be totally honest. I find Spydercos to be very wide from handle spine to blade spine Particullarly with that big opening hole. They don't appeal to me pretty much at all visually.

That said, thanks to SolidSoldiers contest, I got hold of a Delica SS Plain edge to try out. It did what I needed it to do for the three days I carried it. BUT! I carry clipped in the back of my RF pocket. My keys are in the bottom of that pocket. The slimmer a knife is in that dimension, the better. The Delica SS is also quite heavy, and slicker than greased owl poop with slippery hands.

If it tells you anything about my tastes, my favorite so far are the Kershaw Vapor (and Vapor II). Second fav my BM 350, followed closely by my CRKT M16-03Z.

All pretty slim knives you see?

You asked!

The first knives I bought as an adult (about a year ago) weren't crap, but they weren't right for me either. Basically, I fell into what seems like the common trap of buying knives that have big blades and not considering any other factor. My first 2 knives were a CRKT 4" Wortac folder and a SOG Pentagon Elite II folder (also 4" blade). The quality on both knives was fine, especially the SOG which has the impressive Arc-Lock. I believe that both these knives were featured in the first copy of Tactical Knives I ever read, and I'm sure that's why I bought them. When I finally did some training with them and started to carry them, I realized that the Wortac was just too big for EDC duty and the SOG handle and blade shape (false-edged dagger) just didn't work for me.

I ended up giving both away to friends who don't really use them, but think that they're very neat. I was mostly disappointed because I was giving away perfectly good knives, and the SOG Pentagon especially really is neat - the action is silky smooth and it has a very solid high-quality feel (once you buff away the sharp edges on the insides of the handle scales).

Live and learn. I eventually I found the perfect SD EDC: Benchmade Griptilian Drop Point (BM 551).

I have several that fall into this catagory but the stand outs are both Boker folders. The first is the Boker Brend with G-10 scales. The fit and finish is sloppy, the liner lock was paper thin and they mounted one of the screws that secures the G-10 scales to the liner directly under the contact point of the carry clip. This tore up my pants by about the third time I pulled it out of my pocket. The liner lock disengaged when I gripped the handle and the liners are so thin one could pinch the handles almost to the point that they would touch with medium squeeze pressure.
The other is the Boker Gemini Angler. Again, a paper thin liner lock that disengaged and caused the blade to slam shut on my fingers when I accidentally whacked the spine on a tree branch doing a fairly light chop. The liner would also disengage with moderate grip pressure and I could squeeze the sides of the handle together with thumb and index finger pressure.

My first auto was a Paragon ATKO-10 and, despite having no knife knowledge at the time, deemed it a POS and promptly returned it.

CRK small classic wood seb - Make perfectly, but had never seen pictures until I got the knife; expected one peice of wood on side, but there was two. Looks busy in my opinion.

Kershar Random Task lefty model - I find this a bit dangerous to open. Find it easy for thumb to wind up on the blade somehow.

Andy Deveiller's custom - did not see what the fuss was all about and why is costs what it did. Also, could not see sending it in to South Africa for service, so, back it went. (to the dealer, that is)

My biggist disappointment was a Buck Mini-Strider.It had the handling qualities of a brick and no "finese" whatsoever.Exchanged it for a Benchmade 942....boy did I trade up,now thats a knife!

I guess the most disapointed I ever was with a knife was the Spyderco Native. It looked really good but it never was comfortable in my hand. I traded it to a guy for a rifle 'scope.

Years ago, before finding this forum and quality knives, I got a knife catalog from someplace that had what I now know was a copy of the A.G. Russell one hand opener made from a solid piece of steel. I ordered that knife. It would have been my first one handed knife, except the quality was so poor that you couldn't open it with one hand no matter how much you adjusted and lubed it. In hindsight, at least it was cheap.

Dare I say it?

Dare I even so much as mildly implicate it?

alright...I've slipped on my running shoes and I'm ready to outrun the lynch mobs...

my most disappointing knife was....

AN EMERSON COMMANDER!! Got it during a bad factory run they had, crappy lock, liners rubbing, and slop ass fit and finish.

Before any wars or acts of unspeakable cruelty should occur (especially to me) I'd like to mention I got another Emerson Commander a year later that had all those problems rectified, and it was a hell of a good knife I carried for quite awhile.

RWS-Glad to here you got your problem rectified. The Commander is a hell of a work knife, basically, a folding khukri. I ended up trading mine just because it was a bit too big for my personal tastes. The Mini Commander is more my size, but again, is just a little bit.
Thanks,
Matt

Bizzarly for me I am about to say my BM750 is very good, though it took a lot of work to get a good one!

My two worst dissapointments would have to be anything with a tanto tip (Americanised) like my CRKT M14 and the sloppy QC of the AFCK series knives. Great in a number of respects but a few faults I could not live with.

Oh, a last one, the thumb studs on my MOD CQD DD keep falling off! Not good. :(

Definitely the worst disappointment was a Boker Smatchet. The blade is made from a stamped steel blank of unspecified composition. The black polycarbonate handles are fastened with aluminum rivets. Very cheap looking, much like a child's toy sword.

Camillus EDC. It's not a bad knife by any means. But it made up my mind about metal handles, frame locks, and recurves. Those are all knife design elements that are not to my preference. And no, it's not the only example I have of those elements.
