What Was Your Most Disappointing Knife Purchase?

The 'Loveless' drop point hunter...

It was back in the box for return shipment within 3 minutes...

CRKT Ryan Model 7. I loved the looks of this knife, and still do. The zytel scales made it fill to cheap, and a bit to thin for its size in my hands. I ended up giving it away, but might buy anoher one to put micarta scales on, and tweak out a but.

:)

CRKT stiff kiss, Piece of s$%t, too small, horrible sheath, bad handle(if i can call it a handle at all). The only go thing i can say about it is it was razor sharp out of the box. CRKT is pretty much off my list as a manufacturer to buy from.

Camillus EDC. It's not a bad knife by any means. But it made up my mind about metal handles, frame locks, and recurves. Those are all knife design elements that are not to my preference. And no, it's not the only example I have of those elements.

I hear ya Phil!

Except for my Kershaws (Dang but I like them!) I only have one other all metal knife - a Chinese M-16 Clone.

I tend to go for Zytel or G-10, although I am looking to get a Gerber Harsey Air Ranger - and it has Aluminum scales (albiet with checkering).

Criminy! When will it stop????

My most disappointing were a Case mini-Copperlock and a Boker Gemini. (There have been a few others.) I really like the looks of both knives but neither would take or hold a decent edge. The fit and finish on the Case was also pretty bad. The one Spyderco that disappointed me the most was the Walker lightweight. I have one with Tufram handles that I got from Ironstone. Great knife. So when Smoky Mountain Knife Works ran the lighweights for $25 I bought one. The handles are so flimsy that the liner lock doesn't hold correctly and there's way too much blade play. I exchanged it for yet another SAK..........:D

MOD Hornet - nothing really wrong - but nothing realy special about it either. Basically a mass produced sharpened piece of metal without any soul. The only higher end factory piece to really rub me in this way.

hstdist - I had a MOD Hornet, too, and it gave me the same impression you mention. Nothing wrong with it, but it just didn't speak to me. I gave it away after just a few days.

Somebody mentioned the Boker Brend. I had one and can confirm that the liner is very thin. Plus there was blade play that could not be eliminated by adjusting the pivot screw. I gave that one away, too.

Come to think of it, I've given away a lot of knives. That's why I've come to believe that buying Sebenzas is an economically sound idea. At least I know I'm getting a keeper.

This has got to be one of the best threads. I have already avoided getting some knives that caught my eye, all having to do with forumite's opinions.

:)

I have to agree with those criticisms of the gritty REKAT rolling locks. No wonder that REKAT went out of business.

Another disappointment to me was the old model Greco Companion - well made, but much to heavy.

I'm almost afraid to post this, but I will. The three knives I was most disappointed with were all from the same company,a company with a great reputation for durable knives.I'm sure they are very durable,but...
knife no1,a battle mistress,I got from a forumite. It had the worst grinds I've ever seen on a knife,I also didn't like the handle, way too thin and very uncomfortable.traded it off immediately

knife no2,aftershock bolo, never arrived.I paid by credit card, and six months later I got a check and an apology from the authorized distributer, and when I called BC direct I could order one but it would be "a few weeks" which is what I was told at the beginning....

knife no3, assault shaker, came without an edge.seriously,I got a knife without an edge, coating was still there.I went ahead and sharpened it but I didn't like the stock thickness for a knife that size so I traded it off.

I don't think I did anything to offend anybody at that company('til now!)and I know lots of people are very pleased with their busses,so I have to wonder if I'm just that unlucky?

EDI Genesis II. Back when I first tried a "tactical" the EDI caught my eye on E-Bay. It turned out to be a total POS! Too thin, cheap feel to it and poor grind and shape to the blade. Never carried it and am still trying to get rid of it (its been three years).

Cold Steel Triple Action. After 3 weeks of manipulating it, it just fell apart.

danj, if that's your only experience with crkt you might see if you can handle a couple more before making your decision, personally i prefer spyderco but they give you a chance to try out some great designs for cheap.

Delta Z knife. 3 inch blade of 440. wooden scales. No soul at all. looked so much better on the web site. it was advertised as an 89$ knife being sold at $30.

It was 25$ overpriced at that.

For me it was a Boker folder, they had of all things...a plastic spring on the inside to keep the lock bar in position, which ended up fatiguing and breaking off, sent it back but they replaced it with one that was marginally better, not by much. I'll not buy a Boker again, not from the one experience but also from their Top Locks as well, for me I've seen some bad fit and finishes on the handles on those...:(

It took me a few high dollar puchases to figure out that I like carbon steel over stainless. I don't know that I will ever buy stainless again. Not that it is bad stuff, I just prefer the simpler carbon steels.

I will add to this three supposedly custom knives from a certain maker(?) I won't name. He describes on his website how he makes his own blades by the stock removal method, and sends them off for heat treating.

Later I discovered several finished blades for sale in a Jantz supply catalog, which looked exactly like the blades of his knives. Also, when I asked this "maker" about making a blade of my designed, he tried to avoid the subject and never gave a direct answer.

Worst was an EMERSON CQC-7. I purchased that one as a Gift for an LEO friend of mine. He immediatly commented on some Blade play and lack of tension on the main pivot. I tried to adjust the tension so that it would open easily yet still stay closed also. He had owned the knife less then a month and he was changing out of his uniform and the knife was in his front pocket. The knife had openend up about 1/8" just enough to let the tip of the Tanto point pass by the Liners, when he reached into his pocket his finger tip caught on the blade and it sliced his finger open. The knife was designed as a Clip Up carry but needless to say he changed it to Clip Down carry immediately.

Contrary to others I have always had good experiences with CRKT products.
