What was your very first knife?

A Case trapper my dad gave me when I was 10.
Wish I hadn't of dropped it in the water and lost it.

I’m glad you asked that question. I almost posted the multi tool in another similar thread but didn’t.
That gave me time to remember the other, little, knife and include it in your thread.

So
my first knife was probably the little green guy but it actually could have been the multi tool. I started going fishing with my Dad (and actually fishing not just making noise and causing trouble; I remember shopping with him for my rod and reel). Pretty soon we were night fishing and all that meant many cans of Vienna weenies and crackers were being consumed. He would busssout his special cool guy multi tool that you see here folded and in the sheath.

I thought THAT IS SOOO COOL. I want to get one of those when I am a big guy. Then I saw one in a shop window and learned that a person could BUY one. Heck I probably thought such a cool thing was bestowed from on high on the deserving big guy when he got big guy enough.

But here was one in a shop window just waiting for me. After much saving of my pennies, and begging and pestering and wanting to go look in the shop window every Saturday on the way to the construction company’s “YARD” where my Dad would go and take me . . . where the totally hot secretaries were working away and the big guys were all shooting the bull and banging the table about one thing and another . . .

. . . some how or ‘nother I secured a big guy kit for myself.

OHHHHHHH YAHHHHHHHHH
I got me a big guy knife now.
I must have been six or eight.

Dad passed away many years ago so now I have his in the collection as well.

The little green knife seems to say “Imperial Phenolic” under the spot of heavy russssss. . . . er, herumph . . . I mean patina. I can’t make out all the letters.

PS: You know how one pairs wine with certain foods and every thing has to be the proper temperature so as not to bruise the pallet etc (or some stuff like that)?

Well the ONLY way to properly bring out the full complexity and flavor of Vienna weenies is to eat them out side, by a lake, with just a “hint” of smelly old fishing tackle box wafting near by . . . and . . . in the dark with a chill in the air in the light from a Colman lantern just brings the whole experience to PERFECTION. And the accompaniment of Saltine crackers goes without saying.

Like you, my very first knife was an Imperial that I purchased at the 5&10 in 2nd grade. It was tiny but I liked it. But I figured out pretty quickly that it was not big enough for doing much cutting and bought a larger Imperial back then. This one had white handles and I liked it for using. When I got around 8-10, I saved up and bought a Case Barlow which was the first higher quality knife I owned and used it for years until it was worn out.

One of the things that attracted me to your post was the multi-tool. My Grandmother gave me one of those as a kid for Christmas. Never really used it, as I thought such knives were toys back then. But unlike the other couple of knives that I mentioned, I still have this one.

I don't recall "modern knives" back then. I feel sure something existed but I was limited to pretty much what I saw at the Five&Ten and the local hardware store which were within bike riding distance for me (couple of miles). Fun remembering....

I had many folders as a kid growing up but my first "real" knife I remember was a buck 110 followed by a buck general fixed blade. Still have both.

My first was a small chinese lock back. First knife that started me on my path of collecting knives was a Gerber F.A.S.T draw.

Imperial Boy Scout circa 1962. Still functional and a user.

Got this little generic, brandless, keychain knife on a family vacation in gatlinberg. Maybe 2" total, blade is bent, blunt, and nicked all to hell. Not really much good for anything anymore.

My parents bought me an Uncle Henry cattleman's knife called a Signature, I think. Of course I lost it on vacation in Pennsylvania. The good news was that Uncle Henry was guaranteed against loss. I sent in the bill of sale and the registration and three weeks later I had I brand new one. Imagine that type of guarantee today😝 Hard to believe that was just 35 years ago...oh well at least we have the internet now!

Chinese Buck 110 clone bought from a street vendor in the 80's. it was a piece of crap but it started my collecting.

A POS plastic-handled, fixed blade Bowie style knife that I won picking up a rubber duck at the Hopkinton County Fair when I was around 10 years old. That knife made me feel like such a man when I threaded my belt through the crappy, vinyl sheath and trekked through the woods around the farm.:)

My first "real" knife was a Buck 110 that I got when I was...I think...14? I wish I had that knife today...

Victorinox Salesman, like a tinker but smaller 84mm size. Still have it thankfully.

A folder my grandfather gave me. It had a large blade, small blade, corkscrew, and a bone handle. Rust has overtaken it now, but the memories I made with that thing will last me until my dying day.

A Victorinox Camper that my grandmother gave me for my 14th birthday. I still have it. It came with a leather pouch and a soft Arkansas stone that I used to learn freehand sharpening. Those are some good memories.

I remember my first one was this tiny, child sized puukko with reindeer bone handle. Started whittling with it and got cut right away! :D I got it on road trip in Lapland. Amazing memory, even though cloudy. I must have been well under ten then.

My first knife was a small Buck lockback, don't know the specific model, that my father had carried and used for years. He had broken the tip off at some point and it was pretty dull and beat up. I thought it was the greatest gift ever and carried it everywhere I went for years. Unfortunately, being a dumb kid, I lost it somewhere. Since then I've sold, gifted or lost dozens of knives, but that's really the only one I truly regret no longer having.

The first knife I bought with my own money. 1982 US made Schrade Lb7. Carried it with me for years. It was lost for 15 or more years and resurfaced in a foot locker when I helped my parents move. A little elbow grease and time on the Sharpmaker and it still rocks.
