What will keep you FROM buying a knife?

Like all the practical guys over here, money is a major factor. And also the distance and the distance the package has to travel.

It is nerve-racking just to think that it might never arrive or arrive but receiving an empty box! :D

I'll lead off with ..........OPEN BACK FOLDERS !!!!!

Any folder with an open back just exists to catch dimes, lint, and dirt.

I wouldn't wish one of those in YOUR pocket!

:barf:
Right now, the fact that I cannot get delivery of a knife that I have had on order since July of 2003 and for which I paid my money up front. :grumpy:

Anything designed for large hands exclusively
Anything slippery when wet or unusable with gloves
Anything without a durable build (nothing less then 1/8''. preference to 1/4'')
Anything that can't be pulled out after hammered in, or can't be hammered in
Anything I can't abuse as I need to, whether or not it was designed for it
Anything that won't survive my boredom, dangerous thing that that is
Anything that won't work or will be damaged, by desperate actions.

That reminds me of something. About 6 years ago I was friends with an ex Navy Seal. He thought the Hibben knives by UC were the peak of the knife making arts
 . Moral of the story? Just because someone was in the Special Forces, dosen't mean they know squat about knives.

Just wanted to point out that there's a big difference between the Navy SEALs and the Army Special Forces. If you pass the SF Qualification Course, you get a very nice kninfe indeed: the Yarborough .

What is "mall ninja'd"? This is mall ninja'd. Not to mention that the designs are stolen.

so shoot me for not being an expert on the meterials.

but its just got to have some "WOW FACTOR".....if it doesnt look like it would sit well in my other choices of taste then it wont do.

so shoot me for not being an expert on what I'm suposed to like.

I wont buy it if it doesnt make me feel all funny and gooey.

so shoot me for not being an expert on all the brands.

but if it doesnt tickle that feeling that I had when I first obtained a knife then it aint goin in the collection.....I dont care who made it :p

Production knives - Poor quality and/or poor custom service.

Custom knives - The same as above, plus poor attitude on the part of the maker.

Hmmm... See, now I never thought of it that way. But I don't keep open-back folders in a pocket that shares space with anything else -- least of all money. My knives deserve a pocket to themselves, and I have enough pockets to spare, at any rate. I like the fact that dust and lint -- which IS going to get into a knife, open-back or not -- can be easily blown out of an open-backer.

What will keep me from buying a knife these days:
- any recurve whatsoever;
- any steel not billed as a "stainless steel" (I avoid carbon steels because I worry about rust in S. Florida);
- a liner lock of any type that uses an inserted ball bearing to engage a detent (I greatly prefer the milled-tang that the Gunting and Para-Military use).

adding:
- fully serrated, or more than 50% serrated
- made in China
- too expensive to carry
- flimsy, not durable

I like this post.
So basically, you want a crowbar! :D

I don't necessarily hold a knife to a "hammerable" standard, but I like durable, that's for sure. But it doesn't sound like you'll do with anything less than something by Becker Knife and Tool... What kind of folder does a guy like you carry that won't break the bank like an Extrema??

Oops. Good point. My little brother is Army Special Forces (Captain) and he'd probaly whip my behind if he saw that I'd lumped him in with the Seals like that. What can I say, it was late.

On a side note, it really sucks having a kid brother who can now whip your behind.

a weak detent in a framelock/linerlock. i think a knife that won't stay securely closed can be almost as dangerous as one that won't stay securely open.

1. No guard or one that is too small, along with slippery handles.
2. Price higher than I can afford.
3. The maker gets a lot of complaints about bad service, long delays in shipping, etc.
4. A knife that is unusually thick and heavy for it's size.
5. Blades made from cheap stainless - 420, AUS6, 440A, etc.

Production knives - a dull edge or bad ergonomics in the handle.

In the case of a hand made knife - if I don't care for the maker.

A crowbar is close, but I still need edge and shaping. I need a durable and functional knife, therefore I do not need a pretty knife. My primary carry at this point is an entry tool made by the Jones brothers, which is literally the ugliest knife I have ever owned. It is also one of the best, from shaping, design, the serrations they chose to include, and the brutal functionality of it. Backup is a Gerber Walker that I've had for a long time. Outdated to some, but the nature of its age makes it suitable for my needs.
