Hey Guys
Iv'e thinking about trying my hand at modding a SAK.
Saw here a week or so ago where a pair of scissors was added to a Vic Farmer (my favorite EDC) and thought it was pretty cool and useful.
I also saw the discussion about who likes or dislikes the bottle opener.
Personally I have never had a use for the bottle opener or large screw driver, especially in the field, so I thought I would try adding the scissors and while I was at it maybe swapping a small blade for the bottle opener.
My question is which blade do you think is most useful in the field? The small spear point or the electrician blade with wire scraper notch. I am thinking the electrician blade. It is a little heavier and the wire scraper looks like it would work great for scraping a fire steele. Your thoughts please or any other suggestions. Thanks

I'm the guy who had the scissors added to the Farmer. I think you have an excellent idea with exchanging the electrician blade for the bottle opener. That sounds like a handy combination, with the addition of the scissors!

I don't know the small pen blade can be right handy... I say a canopener with the little flat head on the end is veryusefull but with a little practice you can open a bottle with anything.

Well, I think you could probably find a way to pop some bottles in the field if you had to, but at the same time I think the importance of having another super sharp blade ready to go as a back up is often understated. I would keep the second blade.

I like the Farmer because it is the farmer. Change it and it's something else. That said, I hope yours turns out well for you.

I like my Farmer as it is, I think it's pretty much perfect. I use the bottle opener pretty regularly when in town/around the house, and not all my gear is strictly for the woods.

For me, a pocket knife has to be kept pretty simple to be worthwhile. Cram too much on and you can't keep it in your pocket, and it will weigh a ton (Like the leatherman).

I'd don't think I would change anything on my farmer. A 111mm OH alox version would be awesome though:eek:

Really I pretty much think the Farmer is a great knife and if I only had one I probably wouldn't be thinking about doing the blade swap and scissor adition. But I have Six Farmers and a few Soldiers so I thought I would try Modding one. I also thought I would try adding a saw and small blade to a Alox Cadet.

Cut the keyring off! I carry a Soldier and do without the saw because the keyring cuts into my hand during use. It is sharper than the rings on the Cellidor models. I was thinking of doing something similar, only I want to get an Alox Harvester? (Soldier with sheefsfoot or hawsbill instead of can opener) and make the bottle opener a combo tool (I don't want to give up the can opening abilities) and cut the keyring off.

I too see SAKs that I like, but are missing large scissors, which I desire more than a bottle opener or corkscrew on a SAK. I'd keep 2 blades, large scissors, saw, awl, can opener on one and call it a great SAK. Where can one get a SAK modded?

i like the farmer as is... if were to ever get a chance to add anything, i would add the toothpick and tweezers....:D

Take it back! I was fine for months with the keyring and now I notice it jabbing into my hand and don't like it!

I had the same problem with the key ring stud but solved the problem for me by using a #10 split ring from a fishing tackle store instead of the small key ring they come with. They are normally used to attach treble hooks to heavy salt water fishing lures. because of their size they keep that little ring stud from digging into your hand. Atleast they work for me. I think the #10 I used has a 200 lb pull rating. You need to pry it open and work it around with a pair of needle nose pliers.
The brand I used was kind of pricy about $6 for six and made of stainless steel. You can get the standard chrome ones for half the price and twice as many and should work as well.

I like the farmer as is . Amazon has on sale again for under $17 with free shipping. My favorite is the soldier but I like the lanyard insurance of the farmer. That big flat screwdriver has saved me several times, i wouldn't touch it!

1tracker,

go to www.sosakonline.com, and check with felinevet's shop there. Scibeer does the mods, and felinevet lists them at his shop. Scibeer is the one who added scissors to my Farmer.

Thats exactly the Farmer mod i was dreaming of.
Either leave the canopener as is or maybe replace it with vics combo tool (canopener/bottleopener).
Then replace the bottle-opener with a small blade.
Then add scissors.
The perfect Alox equivalent of the Huntsman.

I'll be doing my first real SAK mod this summer as well.
I've already done simple mods like replace plastic scales and hand-carve and fit wooden ones.
I'll be sticking to the celidor version for my mod as i hear modding an Alox can be tricky.
