What would a mountain man use today?

Cool. This was the kind of typical outdoor workwear I saw in addition to the ski type stuff.

That documentary wasn’t shot outside Helsinki. There were no tourist shops in sight.

It was somewhere in Russia.

That made the talk about traditional living plausible. Poverty and isolation can be a time machine.

What appeals to me about the older ways and modern ways to survive come back to the most important skill of all, the use of your mind and adapting and using the skills and wisdom to survive using what is on hand and the gear you selected. You have to know your gear and if something goes kablooey, how to fix it or improvise.

I think a good not from Home Depot thin bladed hatchet is underrated along with a good knife. And a great big knife made from 5/16 steel is probably overrated.

actually it is a Russell green River sheep skinner. I reshaped the blade and handle, and added an osage orange handle with copper pins.
Looks kind of like a Grohmann Canadian Belt Knife. People who have them swear by their versatility.

a seriously good thread .
Id like to throw in a few things too .
where is our mountain man getting his equipment from ?

Its been my experience when I was waaay outback , that there was traveling vendors who sold stuff out of back of their trucks , and the general store in town , town being a pub , a service station , and a post office , or if you went to a bigger town , a two or three pub town .. maybe 400 mile away where there was several shops who sold stuff and a bit of a range of gear , or maybe if you begin at the city where you have a chance at real range of gear ...

an example .. I noticed when I was living in the Kimberlies on an Aboriginal Mission , that big fixed blades were nearly all green river buffalo skinner knives .. and that happened to be all the one store within cooee sold too .. old guy there said he couldnt get better value than them ( value = profit per unit I suspect )

I have a feeling that this would be a factor in what any mountainman / bushman / hermit /recluse then or now would have to deal with as far as his gear

I discovered a new reality TV show titled Mountain Men which shows how 4 different modern day mountain men live, in Alaska, Montana, North Caroline, and Maine. excellent
