what would be your ultimate outdoor vacation? And...

Not sure what I'd do for sustinence, but alone at night in Machu Pichu...would be...dunno...spiritual, somehow.

Trout fishing in Alaska
I have never been to Alaska

The knife I would take?
Hmmmmm
Tough one
Probably my Camillus

I hear there are some BIG trout in Alaska!!;)

Anywhere that the weather was decent that my wife and I could spend a couple weeks with no outside world interference any knife would do but to pick one, my JK Gephart or Hiker. Might ned a fillet knife though as well but could make do with just one knife.

For me, it would be a motorcycle camping trip somewhere wild; Alaska, Yukon, NWT, or Labrador. It would be a fun trip to take with my Russian sidecar rig.

Knife? My Northstar would do just fine, backed by a Vic Spirit and a 24" S&N Hudson Bay camper's axe.

Since I'm fantasizing, I might replace the Northstar with a nice Nessmuk - like the one StretchNM was sporting in a recent thread.

pics of the knives.....

for me it'd be months on the PCT and the knife, if it could be any knife would be an Ed Fowler short camp 5", if it had to be a knife I already have, Busse SAR-5

what would be your ultimate outdoor vacation?
I have two, neither really fits:
1.) I want to go back in time to the place I used to camp in the woods near our house in Massachusetts. It was right on a reservoir, deep deciduous forest in all directions. Plenty of small game to hunt and rainbow trout to catch. For this one I wouldn't even bring a fixed blade. For nostalgia sake, I'd bring the Boy Scout knife, Buck 110 and Estwing hatchet I had then. Man, with that rig, I was Conan the Unconquerable! Unfortunately, this is impossible (hence the necessity for time travel) because that wilderness is now nicely portioned off "summer home" cottages. The place that when I look back at my life and love the best, is gone.

2.) Alaska. The only place I'd have a real chance of dropping out and ridding the world of myself and myself of the world. Mountains, forests, rivers. All the hunting and fishing a man could ever want. For this one I'd be OK with a sub 5-inch fixed blade (BRKT Aurora being the knife of choice) because I'd be bringing an axe -- full size -- with me for the big jobs. This one doesn't meet the criteria, because it's not a vacation -- if I went, I'd happily not come back. I don't mean an intentional suicide, but just go and live out my life without having to worry about screwing up anyone else's. Whether I lived a long time or short, It Would Be Good.

I think my ideal vacation would be a 1 year trip. I'd start with a west coast tour, starting from Southern California in the Winter, arriving in Alaska (never been) for late summer and fall, then heading back home to Hawaiian beaches for some beach camping, and then Australia (great barrier reef!) to top it all off. The one knife definitely coming with me would be my SS Bravo-1.

I want to finish the Appalachian trail. Though its more of a temporary switch of lifestyle more than a vacation. I feel like I left a part of myself out there that wont be whole again till I finish it.

If my little family totally falls apart like it looks like its going to:( I guess Ill be trying to work that out in spring 2010, after that I dont know what. Maybe just keep going....

As for knives Im thinking either a leatherman S4 (if I get one) and a mora 545. Or a 3rd generation Delica (if I can find another one dammit:rolleyes:) and the leatherman micra I had before.

Cool thread:thumbup:

Its snowing here right now so maybe a tropical island like in the movie Castaway!
A month ago if you said pick one knife with a 5 inch-ish blade or smaller i would have picked my Enzo.
I still love my Enzo but i just finished putting a handle on my Becker Companion blade blank.
Amboyna burls slabs, slightly modded blade profile and vinegar patina.
Its Razor sharp! ( i know because cut myself with it already, lol.)
Of course i'd want a SAK and/or multi-tool to take along with it for the finesse jobs.

Here you go!

Its not perfect, the wood was a little brittle so i had some problems countersinking the rivets.
The slabs were a little short, other wise i would have made the slabs go closer to the cutting edge (like on my Enzo).
Next time i think i'll buy Corby bolts like i used on my Enzo.
Also i may just patina the blade some more.
Its not perfect (nothing i do is, lol!) but still i'm very happy with it.
Those lines in the Patina are brush strokes, i was messing around with different methods of patin-ation, lol .
This is only the second knife i've patinaed (the first was a little slipjoint).
:)

For me i would love to build a small 15-16ft shallo draft sail boat. Set sail early spring from NOR CAIL and sail it north to Alaska. At night stop when ever i can on the beach build a camp. If the area is lookin intresting spend a few day, Walk around and look. Then keep sailing never going to far away from shore. Stop on little islands on the way north. Fish and pick clams, Stop at villages to meet people.. Should take me a few months to get up north. Then sail the boat up there or ship it back. An axe and a hatched. A few stainless knifes would do me fine...
Been looking at the map for a while now and keep on wishing... That should be an adventure to remember

Dream trip # 2

I'd love to take my family and go live with Les Stroud for a few years.

Porcupine Mtns, Michigan without any black bears raiding my campsite after dark.
Conditioned bears scare me.
