My father wants to get me a graduation gift. I already used a little of the money to get a practical user, but my parents want me to get something that I never would buy on my own, something special. I know I could have a billion moras with this, but that isn't the point. I'd like something that looks nice, but that is also a practical knife.

Currently I'm leaning towards a Dozier Buffalo River Hunter w/ Cocobolo scales. I also really like Dozier Professional Guides knife, but I like to looks of the BRH better.

So, I was curious, if you were in my position, what would you get? What is that knife you long after, and if you got it, you'd almost be afraid to use it. This is a difficult desicion as I'm used to spending hours researching for a $50 knife. I'm tempted to buy the next 5 knives on my waiting list (Bark River Canadian, Fallkniven F1, Al Mar SERE Operator etc...), but this may be my only chance for a knife in the $200-$400 range.

SO... what would yours be?

Have you thought of having a custom knife made? Would be withing your price range and you'd get something truly unique to treasure.

I've never looked at a knife in that price range but I own an f1 and it's awesome....and I'm longing for a brkt foxriver but it's a bit big for me to wear.....lot a things ou could get with that kinda dough...an awesome sleeping bag a good back pack and a.22 rifle or a shotgun a stove all sort of nifty campstuff....

Or, dare I say it, A Busse? The Company Store has Limited Edition Badger Attack TAC's right now, nice satin finish blade with tiger-hide micarta handles. Absolute beauties! I would love one, but I can'f afford it at the moment. By the time I can, they will have sold out. $397 for a 'knife for life'

I'd definitely go custom! You can get exactly what you want, to your specs and have it be unique.

I'd suggest the custom route as well. You can make it even more special by selecting your own wood, pins steel and pattern, preferably by a member here on BF. Then consider a sheath worthy of the knife. A custom by member Paul Long made from tooled Herman Oak leather, doeskin lined, and cartouched on the back with your name and date with the PFL stamp.

Suggestion is mine... decision is yours!

Already got it to spec RD7 with some embellishments

I like the idea of going custom, but I'd really like something from the area that I've lived in while at school. So Arkansas or Missouri. That is why I was seriously looking at the Doziers.

Can anyone recommend another maker? Maybe in this area? I've never had a custom knife before, so I don't really know where to start.

Anyone know what the wait time on custom Doziers are?

Check out Dan Kosters work in the "makers area", he has a really great WSK as well as many other wicked blades. His prices are reasonable as well.

Here are a couple more Arkansas knife makers:
Jerry Fisk
Tom Krein
Lin Rhea
Lee Ferguson
Cliff Polk
Pat Crawford

Just offering up some options.

I happen to agree with foxyrick. Great all around blade, hefty, and indestructible. If it were something I wouldn't buy on my own normally, that would be it. Also, if you don't like it, you could sell it here on the exchange and probably get all of your money back. Maybe more than you paid once they are gone from the BCS.

hey, if not going for a custom knife, I would choose a Fallkniven knife. Hell yeah, the F1 is a fine knife. But like you said, that is a knife you could purchase yourself also.

I don't know if you like big knives. But the Fällkniven NL1 (Thor) is one hell of a knife. A friend of my purchased it a while ago and I must say that I'm very impressed. By the looks but moreover by it's performance. This knife is now on top of my "want to buy" list. But it's a little expensive to me now.

If you're looking for a small knife I can highly recommend the tk5 or tk6 from the Kronor series from Fallkniven. Price is double the price of the F1 I estimate. By the way, these tk5/tk6 come with nice gift-boxes.

Sweet looking blade and firesteel combo Darkaz, congratulations.

As for the original message, because you like Dozier knives, I would lean towards having one custom made to your specs, with imput from the Dozier.

If it's a one-time gift from family, I say go custom. It'll be a one-of-a-kind blade for a one-time event.

If your father is Don Rearic, however, you should get a Busse. :p

I say get a custom---and make it one(or 2) that you will use.

I have a boat load of Bill Siegle's knives that I USE-and he can build you whatever you want.

But so can Tom Krein,Justin @Ranger Knives and Scott Tanguay--and MANY others on this Forum.

IMHO--if you get a custom--get one you will not be afraid to use, test, beat on,etc.
It is ONLY through USING the knife that you will learn what it can and can not do.

Do NOT rely on someone else's report on how well a knife does..It will be in your hand --not his.

Also--if your budget is $200-400....that's a wide range.

You could get a $200 knife-and spend the rest on other camping/survival gear,or training.Do not forget to get a good sheath for that knife-at least as well constructed as the knife it's in.

Do not make the mistake of thinking a $200 knife is half the knife a $400 one is(or vice versa).

Again-IMHO....

Sincerely

Dr.Bill

Man for that kind of scratch get a custom. Dan Koster and his Monster Nessie would be my choice.

Whatever, you get, make sure it is the maximum your parents will pay.:D So if they will pay $400, make it that much, if they will pay $200 get something worth that much. Many customs and high end productions will go well above that.
